Message: Is the Ralph Williams discussion still active. Ralph Williams ran a car dealership in Edmonton, Alberta CANADA during the 1970's. I know he had other operations in the U.S. as well. He was loud, abrasive and tried a new style of selling cars here in Western Canada at least. He was magnetic and for the first year he did his own commercials. Then Cal Worthington came along with his dog Storm and handled the commercials after that. I am not sure if Cal bought the dealership from Ralph but I don't recall seeing Mr. Williams again doing the commercials. By the late 1970's Ralph Williams Noralta Motors was gone. I really want to know what happened to Ralph. Is he still alive etc. Allan McIver Edmoton, Alberta, CANADA

Message: Centinela Park. My uncle, Phil Daher, was the Parks and Recreation Director for the city of Inglewood in the late 60's and early 70's. He left to take the same job for the city of Fresno when the Inglewood city council wouldn't let him proceed with his plan to convert Centinela Park into a golf course. In the long run, that might not have been such a bad idea. I remember a boy scout jamboree in the park in around 1957 or 1958. Thousands of boy scouts running all over the hills looking for girl scouts. At that age, we just didn't know why!

Message: John, These B/W photos of Inglewood are fantastic. Every scene seems so familiar. Are there any of Centinela Park? We had a Boy Scout camp-out there, which stretched the bounds of good judgement even in 1969-70. I hope you will eventually disclose your source for these gems. Are they from one of those limited edition "hometown" books? Thanks, and keep 'em coming.

At least setting an alarm that I usually woke up before it went off. It's been a long row to hoe. C-Town has definitely helped our down time. It will still be a pleasure to see and read the " Haps " that are going on. Thanks J.B. and the rest of you Cougs that have been part of our enjoyment. We'll still be here so if you want to give us a shout, gitter on! MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU. Jake N Jude

Message: Hey, John Boy; Do you remember when gas was only 19.9 cents per gallon for regular at the El Cheapo gas station on N/B LaBrea in Inglewood, just north of Florence Ave.. It was one of the only serve yourself gas stations back then all of the other gas stations had attendents to pump gas for you and wash your window and check under the hood (Maaaaan am I old or what). I don't think there are any full service gas stations in existance anymore. I used to fill up my VW Bug for $4.00 and drive to work all week. I also, on the other hand, remember filling up my 350 Chevy Biscayne every night for cruising and racing as it liked to drink petrol with 3/56 rears. I think high test gas was 35 cents a gallon. I used to go to hawthorne airport and get fuel sometimes, as the plane fuel was a higher test gasoline. There also used to be a place in Torrance, I believe on PCH called WILCAP that sold racing fuel mixtures. I used to buy fuel there for my 650cc punched out to 700cc Triumph motorcycle when I was going to race it

Message: I talked to Bill Shultz this morning and he is doing pretty well with his hip replacement surgery. He is walking around a little bit and is in the VA rehab center going through the routine. He doesn't know when he will be released yet, but thinks it will be fairly soon. He seems to be in good spirits. Told me a Catholic priest came to see him this morning and he thought, "Holy crap, I'm worse off than I thought!" Fortunately, it was just a check in visit.

Message: Hello John and fellow Cougars; I'm really enjoying the old photos of our neighboring city to the north. Back in the 50's my mom was a PBX switchboard operator for a medical telephone exchange about a block away from Sears. This was decades before cell phones, voice mail, even beepers. Most of the doctors and lawyers in the LA area would have their phone lines routed through an exchange like this and when they were out of their office they would call in and pick up their messages, or if an emergency, the exchange could usually find them wherever they were and give them the information. My favorite Sears memory is when Barbara surprised me with a present for my 23rd Birthday. It was a Winchester Centennial 66 Carbine that she bought at Sears for the staggering price of $125.00. That was about two weeks pay back in those days. And I still have the rifle and Barbara, I'm a very lucky man. Hope to see you all on the 14th. M.S.

Message: Thanks for the great pictures John. Lots of great memories. The current shot shows the office building that my Dad used to have his office in back in the early 60s. Right behind the IHOP. So I spent a lot of time at that Sears Store. Along with the Novelty store that was located right next to the Sears. That Sears as I recall had 3 levels and a big excalator that connected the floors. Like Arlo said in Alices Resturant, you could get almost anything you wanted there. I remember getting my first pair of Beatle Boots from that Sears! The fellow that turned the Lennox theatre into a mattress store lived nearby. In the late 50s his daughter used to babysit us. I remember he had a very old flatbed truck with no sides, just a flatbed and a cab. When I knew them, the old Lennox building kinda gave me the creeps. I'm sure in its heyday it was beautiful but when I knew the building it was just old and musty. Now I am old and musty.

Message: There have been some comments concerning the Lennox Theater. I remember it in the late forties. I can?t remember when they started having a sort of lottery night and people could win money or prizes. I just remember a lot of people were hoping to win something. I think it was in response to television i.e. it was the theater?s attempt to pull in customers. The Lennox was never a luxurious cinema, but I remember a couple of movies that I saw there. One of them was Bedtime for Bonzo with Ronald Reagan playing second fiddle to a chimp. Another was Anna with Silvana Mangano (sp?). It was a very sexy movie back then and the music from the movie became a world wide hit. Although it was an Italian movie, I think that Silvana sang the song in Spanish. Do I ramble? Nevertheless, it was nice to read the comments as always. We did spend a lot of time at the movies when we were kids. And I too remember going to the movies alone or with my younger sisters when we were very small. I don?t think that would be advisable anymore. What happened to people between then and now? Carry on Cougars! Jim Peppers

Message: I have mentioned this before but Lennox Theater was a favorite hangout when I was little. My sister and I used to go there a lot. I lived near Lennox Blvd and Inglewood Ave at the time. I was eight when we moved, my sister was 10. I would never send a child that young to the show today without adult supervision. I actually had a mattress that came from the old theater. It was a real cheapo. If you want to see a lot of pictures of Inglewood just Google collection of Inglewood and open the first item. Scroll down to online items and click. Lots of 50's, 60's and 70's and earlier photos.

Message: John-Wow, Inglewood has really changed! And how 'bout El Segundo? Sepulveda & Rosecrans looks completely different! We would be totally lost. The beach cities still look pretty much the same though, I think. Haven't driven down Highland in a few years, but I suspect it remains as we all remembered it. I also remember walking to the beach - but not barefoot! Actually, we hitchiked a good deal of the time - now who would do THAT today?!? Keep the pictures coming, John - they're great! Betty
