Message: With memories of the theaters we knew as kids, we forget the Lennox Theater on 10723 Hawthorne Blvd. My mother worked there around '44. I think it was still standing in the 70's. Before it was torn down, it was a mattress store. Did anyone go there? (Jerry will let us know).

Message: Very Cool picture of the current Market Street. I really appreciate the time and effort of the person that took this photo. It does look very different than the way it did back in the hey day of the 60s. My Dad used to call downtown Inglewood "Gold Town". Called Hawthorne the same thing. In the picture the area doesn't look too bad. It appears that the Fox is up for lease. I sure hope that someone who occupies it does the same thing as they did with The Paradise in Westchester and keeps the facade. In Hawthorne, Lennox, Inglewood, Lawndale, Torrance, growing up there in the 60s was a wonderful time. Very "Wonder Years". I enjoy hearing and sharing the memories.
Hi Cliff, Yes, I took the picture this morning along with a few others of Inglewood. I'll post them too.

Message: Wow, does time fly... In 1964, 1965 and 1966, I enrolled in Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II respectively. Mrs. Adkins was patient and worked incessantly to assist me. Unfortunately, math was not my forte at that time in my life and very often I had to retake math in the summer because my parents didn't accept the gifted C's or D's. My junior year when I was struggling with Algebra II, Mrs. Adkins called my parents and I remember my father saying, "You think that Roger deserves a break?" Mrs. Adkins said , "No, I do..." What a phenomenal educator! I am now a Superintendent of Catholic Schools in Oregon---Mrs. Adkins, would you like a job???

Message: I can only think of one double-feature that I saw at the Fox Inglewood: "The Hellfighters" with John Wayne (as a Red Adair oilwell firefighter) and "Three Bites of the Apple" with David McCallum. It was around 1969.

Message: As the Christmas decorations suggest, the Fox picture was taken in January of 1975 so 1974 release films would be apropos. Not to mention the fact that by the mid-eighties Fox Inglewood was drifting away from being a first run theater. But for me the picture is just a reminder of the wonderful times I had ten years earlier with my friends there watching some great films on a weekend night.

Message: The N/E corner of Crenshaw and Imperial was a Food Giant, which turned into a Smith's Food King. That is where father-in-law worked. This is from the absolute authority (the wife).

Message: There may well have been a Food Giant at Western and Imperial but in 1956 the Food Giant opened at Imperial and Crenshaw. I saw a posting on the net from a guy that said he lived behind the Food Giant at Crenshaw Imperial shopping center. I lived on Imperial just east of Prairie. My first job application ever was at Newberrys Crenshaw Imperial after graduation. I didn't get hired.

Message: Add me to the list of people who are grateful to have had Ms. Atkins for a teacher. She was tutoring a bunch of struggling geometry students before school, during her prep, lunch and after school. She really went the extra mile and then some. She was also Diaconian sponsor when I was in school. The last time I ran into her was Mother's Day at Redondo Beach pier many years ago.

Message: I was showing my wife the pics of Market street and find that I just can't get past not only talking about the places that we all used to go to like The Fox, The UA, Selwins Jewelers, Sav On Drugs.. But the shots of the cars we drove is just as nostalgic. In the current shot, there is a beautiful 73 Mercury Cougar coming at us in front of the theatre followed by a Buick Electra. Going away from us it looks like a 67 or 68 Chevelle and in front of that is a 72 or 73 Monte Carlo. Since my wife grew up in New York, I had to laff when I told her about the Datsun b210 that is parked in the photo and seen just in front of the oncoming Cougar. It gave me quite a giggle when she asked "What is a Datsun".....I'm looking forward to the next pic...
Hey Cliff, you saw more in that picture than I did, that's for sure

Message: Back in the 1960s, if one should go to the top of the hill at Imperial Highway and Western Ave., you could look down towards the west and see two Thrifimart "T"s. One was at Crenshaw & Imperial, and the other next door to HHS. The Food Giant was on the northeast corner of Western and Imperial.

Message: John: "Garbage Man Garbage Man I would rather be a Garbage Man than to go to Hawthorne High." These are the words that were chanted to us by much larger and smarter soon to be Leuzinger Students, while attending Hawthorne Intermediate. What vision they had. Who would of thought a RE-Tired Garbage Man that worked for a Major City pulls in around 60K a year. I chose Self Employment after H.H.S. And I'M just waiting for the Mexican Peso to come back and then it will be Easy Street. Have a Great re-union My Leuzinger Friends. Henry
Thanks Henry

Message: The pictures of Market Street in Inglewood are terrific. I've saved them to my computer. This current picture is the way Inglewood looked the last time I saw it around 1978 or so. On Occasion I go down Sepulveda Blvd thru Westchester and see the building that once housed The Paradise Theatre. Not quite the same. Does anyone have a pic of Market street as it is today? I don't suppose the Fox Theatre or The U.A Theatre are still there?

Message: I remember a Food Giant at Crenshaw Imperial. When it opened my parents started going every Saturday at 9:00 am sharp. As for toe stubs, I was riding on the handle bars with my sister and caught my big toe in the spokes when I was about 7 years old. Talk about blood and pain. Isn't it amazing I can remember that far back?
That just gave me the screamin' chills.

Yes it is, Britt. You just don't see barefoot kids anymore . . . . maybe that's why

Message: About a week ago a picture of the Crenshaw/Imperial center was posted. I'm surprised I did not see my Grandmothers 59 Rambler in the parking lot. One thing that has me stumped, (swiss cheese memory) is across the street where Sauls and the Boston Store was, there was maybe a grocery store (Thriftimart) that was on the Imperial Hwy side of the street but within that shopping center. Does that sound right to anybody, or was it something else? By the way John, great pictures of memorable landmarks that made growing up in Hawthorne special. Keep em coming.
Thanks Jill

Message: Love reading all the stuff about the stores in Inglewood and Hawthorne. I have one memory of Mr. and Mrs. Solomon. A couple times I would see them on the old Steve Allen Show. This was on rather late, so we didn't get to see it often. They were always in the audience. They were regulars I heard. Anyway they would always bring Steve Allen a huge salami. In return he would give them one of his rubber chickens and his favorite word....Squawk! Squawk! Or something like that! I thought Steve Allen was sooooo funny!
It was SMOCK SMOCK!!! Thanks Jean......

Message: Hey Clark! I had Mrs. Adkins for algebra 1 in 1964-1965. If it had not been for her, I would not be where I am today. I would have certainly failed algebra. Thank you, Mrs. Adkins, if you read this. BTW, I have already called my Mom and thanked her for making me take her class, despite my objections and desire to take auto shop. She told me I would thank her someday. Whew, that was hard! I hate being wrong.
For all who don't know, Mrs. Kathleen Wirz Adkins is a 61 graduate of HHS.

Message: Thanks to Cindy and everyone for memories of Groves Market and the Solomons sundries store. I can remember my mother giving me a dollar to go to Groves for a pound of ground round, a loaf of bread and a quart of milk--and still had a nickel left over for a Snickers bar at the Solomans. Most of the time our milk was delivered by Gold Crown dairy. But if we were running short it called for a quick walk to Groves before dinner time.

Message: Comments on the stores in Hawthorne are bringing back memories. Do you remember Laramies Shoe Store, I believe owned by Larry and Emily Wolfe? They had a machine there that we would stand on with an area to put our feet forward into it and it was like an xray and we could look down into it and see where our foot fit in the shoe. I thought it was fun and don't know of any other store that had that.
Hi Connie that Xray machine was very popular back then, emitting a kind of greenish light. Not sure it did any damage but I never had athletes foot
