Message: OMG - Leed's Shoes! Now I'm having a major (and enjoyable) flashback about shoes. My sister and all her girlfriends spent hours there and at Standard Shoes in Inglewood. Of course, being the younger sister, I always borrowed those many shoes (if they fit). My favorites were called mules - they were slip-ons and came in every color! Hope this memory is a good one for one Becky Slaughter - class of 66! Today I own 2 pair of shoes - black and white tennis shoes! Betty Rodriguez

We had a good laugh because we both had Kathy Adkins for math. I had Mrs. Adkins in '72 and Patty had her in'92!! More and more it seems like Cougars are everywhere!

Message: Someone mentioned Coach Minami and Hawaii, I unfortunately did not make that trip to Hawaii cause that was when I got hit by Marty Warner in his Mustang coming out of Vicki Keller's driveway on my motorcycle at 40 mph went through the windshield and ended up in the hospital. The ironic thing is I ended up moving to Hawaii and actually speaking at the high school we played 20 years earlier (Castle High). I still wish I went to Hawaii though. I know I tried to set my own ankle and told the doctor I was okay to go but he said no.

Message: John, I forgot to return the hello to Ray Smith (1981). Hi Ray. Any luck with the words for our alma mater? You know I have to give props to Coach Minami. Karen Krstich (1978) and I learned to "keep the book" for him. Our boys on the diamond were terrific. I remember having to do the tallys and call in the games to the sports desk at the Breeze. In fact, after I graduated, Coach Minami called me to join the team in Hawaii to keep the book for a tournament...can you say party? I went to UH for summer school right after my graduation...so I was all over that offer! I have "kept the book" for both of my sons' baseball teams for years. This is definitely something learned in Hawthorne that I carried forward, benefitting many down the line.

Message: Hi Cougars! OMG, I just went through the feedback pages current to 900-something. We really did enjoy growing up a good hometown. Hi Bevan, Derek, Jill, and Twitch. Where is Gina Black? As I look for 1979er's to join in the reunion, I am reminded of how many shenanigans I was involved in growing up in Hawthorne. It makes me laugh. Most of them I really shouldn't talk about... John, is there a page in the website that has the words of our Alma Mater? I looked in my El Molino, but I couldn't find it. I am sure the majority of the bloggers can remember the words...after all, didn't we have to sing that song at every football game? I think I actually had to sing it on the microphone, even though I really didn't need the microphone. I am still loud, cheering for my sons' games. Does anyone know where Judy Grood, Journalism teacher era 1978-1979 is these days? Laura, I want to try to come out for one of the committee meetings. March? I need a beach fix. John, again...great website! So glad to see SSSOOOOO many Alumni visitors! Cougarlove, Kim

Message: Hello Cougars -- You may recall a few weeks ago, I posted a favor asking Tammy Levene Nichols (daughter of Gene Levene, HHS '60) for scans of El Molino pages with photographs of the Wilson brothers and their buddy Al Jardine for the book I am writing on the very early days of the Beach Boys. Tammy contacted me almost immediately and over the next several days sent me every photograph of the budding Boys of Summer ever published in the yearbook. An abundance of choices. Many I had never seen before. I cannot possibly thank her enough. Also, thank you, John, and all Cougars for making this possible through this wonderful website. My book will be a very positive look at the band. So, if anyone has more stories or recollections they'd like to share about the guys, Surfin, or early concerts, please feel free to email me at: bfinkmurphy@yahoo.com. And thanks again, Tammy. You meet the nicest people on Cougartown. All the best -- Jim Murphy

Message: Looking at the picture reminds me of how Christmas shopping in Inglewood was always so special. I was at times a little jealous of how nicer their decorations looked compared to Hawthorne. But I guess that had a lot to do with how wide the Boulevard was in Hawthorne. And I?m not positive but isn?t that you, JB, walking into the Taller Girl Shop?mmm

Message: Hey Cougs, I'm sorry I missed the Imperial/Crenshaw pics. I worked at the Boston Store there for a while. Occasionally I'd work at the Hawthorne store, but it was smaller than the Inglewood store, where I actually knew more people. I also worked at the Leed's Shoe Store at the South Bay Center (before it turned into a mall). There's nothing worse than selling women's shoes (can I suggest a matching handbag?). Remember the SBC had a huge slide in the parking lot for a while? I used to have lunch at the Orange Julius stand (about a 100 sq foot stand-alone next to the parking lot) - loved their chili dogs! But, Putney Station restaurant (which looked like a huge rail car in the parking lot) was where I really enjoyed going to lunch (I think I was 16). This was the first place I ordered a "cocktail" and actually got served. Still the best Tom Collins I ever had. Anybody ever go the the slot car track? I think it was around 128th & Hawthorne Blvd...

Message: John, If Dennis was held back a year he either was held back in kindergarten or first grade! I went onto a Dennis Wilson website sometime ago and among the photos on the site was one of his first grade class at York. Most of the student's names were handwritten on the photo, including mine as I was on the top right hand corner of the pic. I knew Dennis and I were freshmen together, but didn't remember being first graders too. I transferred to St. Joseph the next year.

Message: John, that valentine is really a treasure even if it was signed by his mother. What I can't figure out is how he was in your kindergarten class, he must have always been a badboy and was held back because he was in my class of 63, and he was also in my class in 6th. grade at Washington. Or...........you were so smart that you skipped a grade, I would like to think it is the second choice since we all know that you are the most amazing computer guy, this site just gets better and better. Cindy
P.S. Steve, thanks for your comments, I don't know why but the Soloman's store is so imbedded in my memory, I could still tell you where everything was located in that store.

Message: Cindy, Solomons had the greatest assorted sundries a (junk) kid could ask for. You hit the nail on the head Mrs. Solomon. The owners grandson is Frank Rubin '65. On the other side of Groves was a liquor store (probably still there). We would collect bottles at Eucalyptus park and then redeem the "pogie" candy. This was where we got our bottle caps to flip. Alas, another pastime fades into the sunset, as the bottle has replaced the landfill. Although, those who will like to resurrect the sport, they tell me that Corona caps are the best.

Message: Great old pic of the Crenshaw/Imperial center. If you didn't like Dupar's and their lip smackin good pies you could always go a few doors to the south to Lindberg's Nutrition which had a restaurant section. You might find a meal made from wheat germ, yeast, tofu, seeds and other stuff. Sure wasn't a very difficult decision for a hungry teenager with a buck in his pocket.

Message: Pitchers and catchers reporting this week. Great song JB, I listened to it this morning, again. Talk about being packed with the greats as well as some of the not so great-midget gadell. As to the steroids thing, that is a media driven congress induced problem. Not condoning the use of it, but anybody that decided to use steroids still had to hit the ball. Many of the users did so for healing purposes. Anybody ever have a lung or back problem and need a shot. Roids, I confess I have had a few shots for the back that were steroids that made the pain go away instantly. There's waxman again got answer this one-Willie Mickey and the Duke!

Message: My Mother shopped at Groves Market. As I got older I took care of my little sister Laura, I wasn't so interested in model building by then, I would either go to Groves market or most of the time I went to Felton market to get something to make for dinner. They had some really neat stuff in that place, too much to mention here. I remember a couple of things about Groves, they had a butcher counter just as you entered the store, and they had a huge glass jug of dill pickles up on the meat case, you could get one for five cents, they were delicious, I have never had a pickle as good since.Cindy

I don?t think I must have ever known the name was Solomon?s as the name just does not ring a bell. It was a fantastic store for a kid though. Now if we can just get the name of the one on Imperial. I think the rubber band gun I bought there was eventually confiscated by Mrs. Carr during algebra at Dana because it was a weapon of Math disruption?haha

Message: Nice photo of the Crenshaw/Imperial Shopping centers. My Boy Scout Troop used to sell fruitcakes at both during the holidays (at least TRIED to sell them, it was like trying to sell a comb to a bald guy). I spent many an hour in those parking lots. I remember Du Par's Restaurant and Charleston's Dept. Store.
