Message: Jerry, the store on 120th and Inglewood Ave. was Solomans, it was next to Groves Market. I spent so much time there, if I had two pennies I would go and buy candy. John Soloman was a very sweet man and would throw something extra into your bag, unless his wife was there, she was not a very nice person and would run you out if you spent too much time. I used to love to put together models, airplanes, boats, cars, whatever when I could get enough money, we used to take bottles back to the liquor store on the other end of Groves and take the money to the candy store for candy and models. Very good memories of the three stores. Cindy
Models??!! I was a model FREAK. I still have half finished models I gave up on when I discovered girls. I guess I can finish'em now

Message: Of course Ruby?s and Sears were great toy stores but they were both in Inglewood. There were two others in our area that I remember from the 50?s that were maybe not true toy stores but certainly carried them along with all sorts of other miscellaneous junk. I can?t remember either of their names but they were both next door to small markets. One was on the Southeast corner of Imperial and Anza (OK, La Cienega) and I remember buying both a store bought rubber band and spud gun there. The other was near 120th and Inglewood Ave. and I remember buying the home version of Beat the Clock. That was a great game to play. Both places were fantastic stores for a young boy to while away the hours and his small amount of cash. I think it took me over a month to save up enough for the Beat the Clock game. Can anyone help me with the names of the stores?
Sorry man, I was an Eastsider. Never heard of Inglewood Av was until 9th grade. I'll bet someone knows.

Message: Read James Cicalese feedback, I thought there was only one toy store in Haytown, 'FOLBS TOYLAND' I loved that place. They had all the toys we couldn't afford. My favorite place to pick up a PEA SHOOTER, to harass unsuspecting friend's and my sister Karen. It was next to Al's speedway if I recall, another cool place. Happy Valentines Ladies.
Hey Rick, Folbs was the best (maybe the only) toy store around in the mid 50s. I could spend nothing but time there, because I had NO money.

Message: John I love this series of photos!! The Crenshaw Shopping "Mall", what memories. I see the Boston Store in the middle of the picture, it was my first Christmas job, I earned $69 and thought I was rich. I was able to buy presents for my entire family for the first time without any help. I also recognize the Zale's Jewelry mart, I am sure one of my many wedding rings came from there :-)...Good times, good times.
Hey Debbie, Yes lots of memories in this series of photos for sure. Thanks again to Jerry Miles for these.

Message: Hey John Would you believe it, on Saturday I'll be 65 I never thought I would ever be this old. Its seems like last week we were drag racing on Hawthorne Blvd. Or at the beach drags on P.C.H in front of the Hyperion plant. Those were some fun races and some scary one's. Hated it when a tire would blow out. When I think of all crazy things we did back then it's a wonder any of us made it to 30. But here we are going on Medicare. I hope the next 65 years are as much fun. Time to take pill. To all the lovers out there have a Happy Valetines day. Jerry Pat.
Hey Jerry, Just laps around the Sun boy. Never look back

Message: Well, it looks like that time again. Yep, reunion time! This time I won't get lost and arrive too late like I did last time. I probably missed alot of those who left early at our 35th by me having "oldtimers" disease. Anyway, it was great seeing those that "tried" partying thru the nite. Hopefully alot more of you 69er's show up at our 40th. Notice that other classes from 67' to 71' are invited. The more the merrier I guess. Sharon Branigan, if you're viewing this, when are you headin' this way again? The snow on the cliffs have been magnificant this year.

Message: Hey Pat, just to let you know that some places still have standards that employess have to adhere to...my daughter, all of 16, is working for See's Candy on La Cienega. She has to wear the uniform with nylons and a full slip. She is not allowed to wear nail polish or earrings or piercing of any kind. She helps her customers from start to finish. Which means she fills their order for them then rings them up. It's nice to know some places still keep their standards. I know that Disneyland is pretty strict about their dress code and ethics as well. Thank goodness!!

Message: Sloey, the old one. I'm embarrased about the turnabout of Americas game. Love the song, but am disheartened at the state of affairs it's gotten to. It was so much fun to watch our old heros, Mays, Musial, Jackie Robinson, Curt Flood, Harmon Killebrew, Sandy Koufax and more play ball with God given ability. It's a shame. Message: Remember back in the days of our childhood, when Mom or Dad would drop us off at the Fox or the United Artist theater in Inglewood, California. Being greeted at the ticket booth by a young man or young woman, dressed in a clean uniform and their pill hat and they would ask; ?How many please.? Taking my ticket through the front doors, another young person would take my ticket and tear in half and return the stub, ?Enjoy the movie? she would say. Even the people behind the concession stand were so polite and helpful. I loved buttered popcorn and Jordan Almonds and a coke and for under a buck. Makes my mouth water, just thinking about it. When I entered the theater I was met by yet another usher who checked my ticket stub and showed me to an empty seat. ?Enjoy the movie sir? he or she would say. Man this takes manners to a different level. While watching the movie and it doesn?t matter if the film was Creature From The Black Lagoon or Ben-Hur or High Noon we always looked out for the ushers with their flash lights. Heaven forbid if you were ever told to take your feet down from the front seat, please be quiet or don?t make me come back. When we watched our film, no wait a minute there is another movie and cartoons during the intermission. This was another time and this is just a window in time for you to look into your childhood. Like I said, when the days events were over and your leaving the theater you were met by hoards of ushers saying; ?I hope you enjoyed the movie sir, Please come back again.? Thanks for posting the photo John, it brought back memories.
Hey Pat, nice recollection of our youth too....

As far as discount stores, I remember going to Sad Sack on Imperial Hwy near Crenshaw. Also, TG&Y, the Crown Store (later Two Guy's later Target remember how they used to close every few years and reopen under a new name?) Gemco, Grant's and the outdoor favorite, the Roadium Swap Meet. Woolworth's had a store on the Santa Monica Promenade til sometime in the late 1990's. Now, it looks like Target, WalMart, KMart and dollar stores have tried to fill that niche.
Great stores from our past there Deb, Thanks for those.

Message: My first job was at Woolworth in Inglewood. 15 years old and rolling in dough, $1.15. The lunch counter was open and everyone got to watch as I toiled elbow deep in dishes. Worst thing was when a couple of 15/16 year old sweeties from IHS sat at the counter and flirted and giggled. Cuz Tim Hood and 'Round' Ronnie Coleman later joined the endless job opportunites. The one redeeming factor was the soda fountain with all the fixings (after closing). Saw the new issue of "Men's Journal", in a fashion spread focusing Bob and Mike Bryan, the world's best doubles team in tennis. Proud dad is Wayne Bryan '65

Message: As most of the 59 & 60 guys know, my brother got a DJ promo at the record store next to the fox theatre after a show. Name escapes me now of the store. That song ...A Summer Place played non stop for a year after he received it in the ROOM. Funny thing , the songs on the flip side were from a guy named Johnny Mathis. Chances Are & the 12th of Never. Boy if you didn't get a hug to those tunes you were uglier than me! Great stuff Jim Peppers. Love the recall. MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU. Jake N Jude.

Message: Funny you should show the UA in 59 as such. Sandra Dee and Tab Hunter lived in our room for a year in that gorgeous embrace, thanks to late night shenanigans. We got the placard off the sidewalk. Yikes, I hope the statute has passed. Also Thrifty Drugs was just a few steps away from the Fox and even being filled with dots, PC, Bon Bons, we'd buy a double cone to go, 10 cents, and catch the 7 back to Felton and 118th, or around to 119th and Anza and head home. Great stuff you guys. It brings a tear to your eye. MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU. Jake N Jude.

Message: Every time Rocky post's feedback it brings more memories. This is from circa 65-66. His Dad 'Zeke' and his brothers were all boxers, Zeke takes us down Imperial hwy. to Hoover st. For you gear heads, there was an Edding's bros. shop on the corner. The Hoover st. gym was at 73rd st. So we're in the gym watching everyone box and work out and we go next door to get an RC cola, fruit pie or something, and on the walk back we pass a black girl about our age with 3 or 4 younger kids, when we passed she looked at us and yelled 'CRACKER' we didn't know what to do. I looked at Rocky and we both started to crack-up, she must have yelled cracker 10 times before we got back to the gym. That was our first time hearing so called discrimination, and we couldn't stand up for ourselves against a girl. Funny life lesson. John, an old friend of mine got in touch with me after 35 years, Jim Covell, went to HIS then, then Lawndale. One of my old surf bud's, Alan Nelson, you might remember him from M.B. pier or '2-6' or Hermosa 13st. He has a brother Pat and Sister Gina, all went to Ramona and HIS. John, Thanks for Cougartown!!!
Hey Rick, Great stuff and thanks for the story. Yes I think I know Alan
