Message: With ALL those cars turning North bound, it looks like any European downtown city without any traffic right of ways. Where's the white lines dividing the lanes, and double yellow lines to divide the two way street? Yikes! My favorite store in high school was 'Standard Shoes', and the store on the east side corner (Benson's??), that everyone got their 'Cords' & Hang Ten T-shirts...along with a pair of deck shoes and the girls and guys dressed almost the same in the early 70's.

Message: I may have shared this before, but, what the heck...The paper Helms trucks reminded me of when, in the second grade, I was crossing my street (137th St) and was hit by a car. After a cool ambulance ride to the ER, the doctor noticed my fists were clenched, asking, "What have we here?" He pried open my hand, revealing a wad of dirty, greasy, bread. It was the mini-loaf of Helm's bread that I got the day before on a field trip to the Helm's Bakery! - Gibby -

Message: WOW! Great shot of Market Street. Too bad it doesn't look this nice now. This sure does bring back lots of fun memories for me. My dad worked at the Fox for over 30 years, so I spent many a day in Inglewood. We would go to St. John's Church and afterwards we would walk to Sav-on's and get ice cream. My dad knew everyone worker bee on the street. And my uncle worked at the United Artist. It was a real family street back in the day.

Does anyone remember these, Akron, Zody's, The Treasury, and who can forget "WHITE FRONT". All were discount stores in LA in the 50's & 60's. Let's get the juices flowing out there and name some more.

Message: What a great read, bravo Jim Raines! And thanks, John, for making this kind of forum possible. I looked at the same picture - noticed the cars - recognized some names, but no real details like you car guys. Anyway, I remember primarily the two movie theaters, and a little earlier time. Saw the Creature from the Black Lagoon at the United Artist and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes practically everyday it played at the Fox. I was completely fascinated by both Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe.
Now Cougars out there, here's my question. Which damn movie did I see first? They're both vivid memories in approximately the same time frame for me. Too lazy to Google it. In any event, both theaters were very luxurious compared to the Plaza. Saw Summer Place in the right place i.e. in a Drive-in. By 1959 I had completely discovered what I had been so fascinated about while watching Marilyn Monroe at ten years of age. Having not seen very much of Summer Place at all, I don?t remember much about the plot, nevertheless, just the title of the movie brings lusty memories flooding back to mind. I?m sure there are various psychological reasons about why I enjoyed watching The Creature. Then again, who care?s. What sweet times! What sweet girls!! And really, there were some real knockout young women in the South Bay, with Hawthorne hosting an extraordinary share of stunningly beautiful women, outside and inside. Thanks again to all the Cougars out there who share these kinds of stories (and the car stuff. It?s always nice to learn!).

Message: What a flashback! In 1960 a friend of mine, I don't recall his name, and I had just walked out of the Army-Navy store, a few doors down from the corner on the right, and met a couple of really cute Inglewood girls on that very corner. I can't remember their names but they both had these plastic, box purses with a silk hanky hanging out of them. Anyone remember those? Anyway, I had just bought this long bayonet and put it down, inside my Levi pant leg so I could get it home without everyone staring (it was in its scabbard). Long story but as we were walking down the street the cute blonde accidently hit the side of my leg with her purse and it went 'BONK'. The only thing I could think to say was "uh, that's my wooden leg." She was silent for a long time. As we walked toward their house, a couple of Inglewood Jocks drove by and gunned their engine. I, of course, flipped them off. The driver slammed on the brakes and both doors flung open and two big dudes came out running straight for me! My buddy took off with the girls down the street at a nice safe distance. I was pretty much doomed to a good thrashing as well as the humiliation that would follow. So, I did what any cat would do when cornered. I pulled that very long, 26" bayonet with saw teeth on the top edge, and pointed it directly at them. They stopped dead in their tracks! You shoulda' seen the shock in their faces! Then, they began to circle but I was backed up against a wall, which was to my advantage. One of them asked me what school I went to. I said "Leuzinger." They said "it figures," and directed a few choice words towards me and "my" school. Finally, they drove off and I was left with mixed feelings of relief and emptiness. I thought the girls would think I was uncool but to my surprise they thought just the opposite, but not cool enough to go out with me again.

Message: OOhh Weee, Man does that pic of Market Street bring back a lot of great memories. Pure Americana. My Dad's office was in Inglewood so I spent a lot of weekends on this street. I saw The Great Escape at the Fox theatre in 63. I saw Walter Cronkite announce the JFK assination on the TV displays while we were at JC Penneys on Market St. Most of all, I remember riding on Market Street in my Dads new 65 Mustang, along side of many of the makes of cars shown in this picture. Man, what a flashback.
