Message: That could be MY Ford Pinto in the picture of Sears... I was 17 in 1976 and was driving a dark green 1971 Pinto, and I do remember going to Sears back in those days. I remember one time we had an away football game and I rode on the bus with the boosters, when I got back to the school the Klasno brothers (big guys) had picked up my little Pinto and moved it from the parking lot onto the walkway by the offices. Guess I'm lucky they didn't put it on the roof!

Message: Interesting observation, Mr. Crotty! I did see a Pinto about a month ago. But yes, generally, there's very few of them around along with the Chevy Vega (when was the last time you saw one of those?) and Ford Maverick (I see more of them than Pintos).

Message: I wanted to share an interesting story. Four years ago I moved to Washington to be close to my sister, Val (75). I was lucky to find a place on the same street. Found out that a family also lives down the street that is from Hawthorne, the Cherry's (not related to Jim Cherry). My husband goes down to the coffee shop to hang out with the guys and he met Brian Rose. Brian didn't graduate from HHS because he lived on 139th so had to go to Leuzinger. At any rate I found it interesting that the small town of Seabeck (1250 residents) has four people from Hawthorne. Brian Rose was interested in finding out if anyone remembers him and I told him I'd write and ask. Anyone out there remember him? Take care, have a great day!

Message: After I sent my message about my sister-in-law last night, I realized I had put the wrong year when Newell met Eva. It was the summer of 1962--what a summer--that was the same vacation when Dennis dove into the river and hit his head on the rock! Eva was 15 THAT summer as her birthday was in September, and Newell had just had his 17th birthday in May. Newell asked me to send this information to Cougartown so I have to get it right!

Message: I have very sad news to report about my brother (class of '63) Newell Endicott's wife, Eva. She won her battle with breast cancer which was diagnosed in 1995. Then she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2002. This morning she lost her long fight. In 1962 Newell, Larry Cole and Dennis Lord went on a summer vacation to Yosemite where Newell met beautiful 15 year-old Eva Barnett. They married in 1965 a year after Eva graduated from Long Beach Poly. Eva leaves their two children, Brian and Wendy, daughter-in-law Diane, son-in-law Frank and three granddaughters, Kaylee, Alyssa and Alexa. Eva was just as beautiful on the inside as her outer beauty, and anyone who knew her could not help but admire her spirit, her style and her strength. Today my brother has lost his wife and I have lost a dear, dear sister.

Message: Just reading the local paper this morning, when I ran across an article about one of Hawthorne's own. It was a story about Dennis Herbst and his work with the Panama-Buena Vista School District here in Bakersfield. It talks about his dedication to teaching music at the elementary school level. The story was very flattering to a member of the class of 63. I'm sure Fred Morgan would have been very proud of his acomplishments of over 40 years of teaching music.

Message: John, I was busy yesterday and did not get a chance to chime in on the significance of the date in R&R history. I wonder how many people caught your reference to Waylon Jennings and the fact that he was supposed to be on that plane. He gave his seat up to Ritchie Valens because Valens was sick with a cold. Also, what was Buddy Holly's next record release after the accident? "I Guess It Doesn't Matter Anymore." Sad choice of records to release.

Thanks too, to all who've sent in their dues for this year, and to those who've become new members. Also, I do see lots trying to get into our Cougartown Info System with little or no success. Please email me if you're having a problem and I'll help you get in. It is VERY important that your information is up to date, so please let me know if you're having a problem.

Message: In 1968 I had failed physical education, so I had to go to Summer School then coached by Jim Bunyard. LeRoy Cannefax, my life long brother and I attended together. One day we decided to pull a trick on Coach Bunyard. Back then the phone from the locker room would ring on a bell outside of the locker room. LeRoy and I locked the locker room and then dialed the call back number on the phone. Outside Coach Bunyard came running! We could hear him fumbling with his keys as he tried to unlock the door. After unlocking the door, he had to open the office as well. Finally he picks up the phone and of course he got the dialtone. At that time Coach began to use a series of cusswords and LeRoy and I started laughing, we couldn't help it. He yelled "Get out of here," which we promptly did laughing all the way. Coach Bunyard was one of my favorites, he always seemed patient with us. Thanks Coach, for putting up with us. Phil Pomerleau, Class of 1970

Message: In 1959 I was just a five year old who loved music! However, my oldest siblings were 20, 18, 16, and 14 years old and I grew up with this 50's music playing in the house, and still remember the day the plane crashed and how I LOVED the music of that era. One song in particular was Richie Valens "Oh Donna, Oh Donna, I meet a girl, and Donna was her name".... I was so sad that day becuase I knew all the words to all those songs of all the young men that died, and just at the beginning of their success. And to this day I cannot live without music, AND, even though there's a BIG generation gap between most of my siblings, I would not have been exposed to it at ALL, and have the appreciation as I do today. BTW, as a very young girl/ preteen, I would fall asleep with the transister radio with the earplug, and would listen all night long to 93 KHJ to Diana Ross & The Supremes, "Little" Stevie Wonder, Beatles, etc. You can take my computer AND TV, but DONT' take away my music! RIP... you guys ROCKED!

Message: Today Feb. 3 is the 50th anniversary of the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper. I was a Senior at HHS and would give my car keys to my girl friend so she could listen to the radio during lunch period. I met her after school to drive her home and she told me about the crash. I told her that it sounded crazy and I didn't believe it. She wasn't happy that I didn't believe her so we turned on the radio and got the news and it was reported again. I drove to a friend's house, Richard Gilpin HHS '58, who was a big music fan. He hadn't heard about the crash yet so we turned on the news and there it was again. Then we went to Melody Music Center and talked to the owners about it. Hard to believe it's been 50 years.

Message: I'm stunned that no one chimmed in on Cougartown on the significance of today! Although before my time, today is the 50th anniversary of the most tragic event in the early years of rock n roll! It was fifty years ago today that a tragic plane crash claimed the lives of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper. It must have been horrible for those of you in the class of '59 or early 60s!? In my era of the mid seventies it would been the equivalent of Led Zeppelin and Elton John dying on the same day. The break up of the Beatles was bad but all those greats going in one crash was the worst! Don McLean said it best..It was the day the music died!

Although his kit is fairly small compared to practically everyone else's, he is the one that can do, & does, keep everyone else in the band on the same page. He is not too flashy, but, makes up for it everynight with timing & consistency. Remember, almost all of Bruces concerts hit the 3 to 4 hour mark. See it, if you can. Shout to Jeff Mann, I would have been there but did not get the info until it was too late. Next time no doubt, Gary (Wa Wa)
