Message: Hey, Don; You win the prize, however, we don't have one. As Mr. Harvey used to say, now you know the rest of the story. Pinky, I never knew his real name, was called "pinky" because his face was always red or flushed and he had kind of a W.C. Fields nose, probably from being a heavy drinker. The story you were told is the same one I was told by some old timers on HPD back in the day.
Maybe Jim Crawford knows the story. If you do, Jim, please fill us in.

Message: If you didn't make Cruise Night last night you missed a great one. Lots of new faces there. Thanks to George Johnson who I haven't seen in 45+ years for bringing his Chevy powered Model A pickup. Great to see and get to talk to you in person, George.
Our own princess, Doris Donaldson showed up all the way from Idaho, what a surprise. Also I had the pleasure of meeting Tammy Levene Nichols, Gene Levene HHS60 and Connie Dewald's HHS61 daughter. Tammy brought lots of pictures of the family too. Good to know they've all grown just a little older, with me.
Karen Graham Kuehl HHS59 came up from Vista and Ernie Nixon HHS63 came down from Bakersfield. Thanks very much to all the "long-trekkers" for making the drive.
Also met Bill Baker (no relation) from the class of 63, Brian Hodge from the class of 81, and one of Hawthorne PDs finest, Kim Wu Iley HHS85, on duty and just checking out the gathering, found out she was in the midst of about 50 Cougars.
Thanks to Denny Unfried for bringing out his new Cobra, great car Denny. Also Wayne and Donna Dickey for stylin' in, in their VW Bug, Bob Jensen for bringing out his "with it", lavender Deux Cheviot, Lee Leonard and his Z28. Thanks too, Lee, for all the Edelbrock hats. Jim Dally and his Corvair were there along with Rich and Mary Prodin Sloan's 56 Chevy rag top, and Jim and Karen Boll Essner's 57 Chevy. Also to whoever owned that cool looking blue and white 56 Chevy and the 62? Nash Metropolitan.
Also met Jerry Miles' friend and good surfin' buddy from the 60s, Dave Griffin. Thanks Dave for being there.
Also thanks to our semi-regulars Tom Bell HHS58, Norval Vorhis HHS59, and Don Scheliga HHS62. I've probably missed a few new ones, sorry about that, but thanks for coming out and being a part of Cruise Night. Thanks very much too, to all our regulars for being there.
I feel very fortunate to have, and continue to make, lots of good friends through Cougartown, and I hear stories along the same lines from many of you too. Cougartown has been a nostalgic blessing for me, and I know, for lots of others. For that I'm very thankful.
I've been informed that the Blue 56 Chevy belongs to Judy Kappen HHS63 and her hubby. Thanks Judy for bringing it out. Also I've been informed by George Johnson that his Model A is a Model T turtle deck and NOT a pickup. I was really looking at the business end, George. Thanks all for setting me straight.

Message: Hey Cougs, Pinky used to ride a two wheeler, but liked to have his liquid breaks, and lunches, fell off too many times, couldn't lift that old Hog upright, so they put him on the 3 wheeler. Was told to me by quite a few oldtimers that hung around Eddings Bros. & Allied Auto. Later Don

Message: Hey John Boy; Is that "Pinky" (old Hawthorne PD) standing next to the three wheeler in front of Penney's? I know this story, (urban legend) but does anyone else? Question, why was "Pinky" assigned to permanent duty on the three wheel motorcycle for ticketing parking violaters in Hawthorne for the latter years of his career?
Hey George, I do not know.

Message: From the Daily Breeze: A boy got his head stuck Thursday in a storm drain in Hawthorne and had to be rescued by firefighters. The mishap occurred near South Kornblum Avenue and West 132nd Street, said Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Mike Brown. Rescue crews arrived about 4 p.m. "The boy was extricated at 4:20 p.m. and taken to a hospital for treatment" of minor injuries, Brown said. Reminds me of some "Stupid Human Tricks," I did when I was young. One of them was at Hawthorne Intermediate, along with some friends we slip through the zizzor gate near the office. I got my body through but couldn't get my head through, I was stuck for awhile, I think my ears were in the way! OK! Lets hear from my fellow Cougars of some of their "Stupid Human Tricks."

Hey Cheryle, I remember you from Hawthorne Intermediate. In fact that's the only picture I could find of you. Yes we all remember those places. Take a look around as I'm sure you'll find some old friends AND hangouts. Glad you found us.

Message: Just an update on Ida's condition. Doing swell! Boy have you heard that phrase in awhile? SWELL? But shes off her walker and wheel chair and nocking the crap out of me with her cane. Jeez she should fight fair! But good to see that shes up and going. I don't want to have to mow the yard again this year. She has done it for 2 or 3 of the last few years. I'm going to claim exhaustion if she can't do her job and I guess if she won't do it, we give this land back to the critters. Maybe? MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU. Jake N Jude.
Get Well Judi!!

Message: John, the memories I get from this site are amazing!! I hadn't thought about BBQ Pete's for years but it was one of my mother's favorite places. By the way, she was an avid "go-ahead" wearer. She wore them (the rubber ones) till her later years, when we had to hide them from her because she kept tripping on them!(geeze, is that what I have to look forward to???). Hey Clark, you should have stopped by my office if you were on campus yesterday, don't let all those shootings scare you off! :-)
Thanks Debbie

Message: Jim Frederick of Hawaii got me to thinking about some things that are redundant. I was in an auto parts store some time ago looking for a tire pressure guage. What I saw was a clear indication that "A sucker is born every minute. They had guages for "Radial Tires, Low Profile Tires, Bias Belted Tires, Truck Tires, Car Tires. Looking at the guages I couldn't tell the difference between them; they all would fit the valve stem on any tire, however, the prices varied by about $3.00 from one 'type' to another. Unbelievable. See you at Foster's
Hey Jim, To my way of thinking, pressure is pressure

Message: Hi John, my mother, who now lives with me, just told me a story that I haven't heard before, when she was expecting me, (I really don't like the word "pr----nt") she and her aunt Josephine, who was also expecting Danny Kieffer, walked to the Lennox theater to see Gone With The Wind. Later when I was around eleven or twelve years old, my uncle told me that the theater was also used as a "cat house." Can anyone comment on that? I remember going upstairs to the restrooms, which was pretty old looking, so, the theater had been around for a long time. BTW, my mom used to work at the hamburger stand on the corner of Hawthorne and Imperial. She also worked at the hamburger stand across the street from Sears. Sorry for just rambling.
Little confusing with the moms being pr----nt and the ca- ---se thing, soooo....I'm not touching this one AT ALL

Message: BBQ Pete was a great place to eat. Their BBQ was as good as any and better than most. What is fascinating about the current set of pictures is to see the changes the buildiing went thru. It appears that the 1957 building is the same structure as the 1954 picture but with "The Circle Room" added on. I assume that was a bar/lounge. Perhaps owned by the same folks as BBQ Petes? In the 66 picture, the Circle Room appears to be swallowed by the BBQ Petes Expansion. But what is very cool to me is the architecture that BBQ Petes had. Very 60s deco with very cool and distinctive signage. This building always reminded me of Panns on La Tijera. although very different food the buildings were just different enough to be interesting.
That was the 50s-60s Googie architecture. The same architecture used in Panns, Ships, Hollys, Chips, Norms, Harveys Broiler, and the Wich Stand. Also if you take a look at the Car Wash places back then, they are of the same architecture.

Message: Like so many, my family went to BBQ Pete's frequently. Mom and dad would always comment that Pete would stand over the diners to kinda rush them along so others could get in. We really loved the food. At 19, I became friends with a girl who introduced me to Pete's son, Chris Petri. He was around my age, and the kindest, gentlest, guy. We would cruise the blvd. every night. The Petri home was directly behind the restaurant parking lot in this most recent photo.

Message: I'm just returning from Alabama and watching the Davis Cup, and glad to re-inforce the fact that HHS influence was felt here in a Big Way. Wayne Bryan's (class of 65) twin boys (number one doubles team in the world) helped the US defeat the Swiss here in Birmingham. I was able to see and visit with his parents as well as his brother Carl (66) and Carl's wife Shelly (67). The team is on to Croatia and a possible return of the Cup to us this year.
Hey Jim, Thanks for the update and GO BRYANS!!

Message: Thanks to Vicky, Sharon, and Paul for sharing their memories of the Beach Boys and car rally questions I had. I've been spending a lot of time in Hawthorne recently helping my parents with some financial matters and was actually in the old Hawthorne Savings (currently WaMu) building yesterday. It's been fun reading the Feedback page and reminiscing. Does anyone know what's up with the Hawthorne Mall? It looks like there's a Quizno's at the end and not much more. I remember going to a school dance in '77 (Winter Formal?) in the center of the mall with my ruffle shirted light blue tux and having a good time with my HHS girl friend.
Hi Tom, The Mall is still in limbo. I think the local school district has offices there and not much more.

I got mine around the time that "Rudolph, The Red Nosed Reindeer" was introduced. I remember the 3D was great..Very cool to me, not so cool to my children or grandkids. Congrats on the retirement, fly fishing and golf are a must, and even better if Judy would join you!
