Message: I was at El Camino College today with some of my track athletes from various South Bay high schools and had a few minutes to look over the trophy case for athletics. I was pleased to see HHS represented in the "hall of fame" by Walt Justice('71) for his contributions as a football coach at Camino and Jim Bunyard who was a football coach at Camino for over 25 years! I know Walt was also a great athlete in his own right. Always a pleasure to see Cougars where they belong..in "halls of fame"!!

Message: My mom worked at Mirkin Motors and prior to that, Kenneth Chevrolet (Used Cars). Gerald Mirkin left Kenneth Chevrolet & opened the VW dealership in the old Safeway building. When Kenneth Chevrolet Used Cars was @ 120th & Hawthorne Blvd, General Manager & family friend Al Bellucci set me up with a '64 Chevy Impala, 409, w/ a Muncie 4-speed, built-in tach, bucket seats, etc, for $400.00! I had it painted "Midnight Blue Metallic" & threw some fat tires on a set of those "original" Cragar mags. The tires & wheels were stolen twice, the stereo, once, & finally they stole the whole car. The thieves parked it in a field near where they parked the Goodyear blimp. They stripped it...then, they torched it! I still haven't recovered from that! - Gibby -

Message: Sharon...Yes, Leo & Sam are brothers, and I have been in contact with Sammy for many years. In fact, I spoke to him just last nite! We have a great story on how our families lived in the same village in Sicily (Valderice), and when we immigrated to American in 1956, we ended up living literally 2 blocks away!...The LaSala's on Cedar and 122nd, and the Nicocia's on Broadway/Freeman. We actually grew up together, having our parents being good friends with many of our weekends up in Winchester (Hemet), were his father Chris had a relative, and the men (and kids) took to the San Jacinto Mtns hunting jack rabbits and other small birds. We have been tripping down memory lane lately, and sharing stories of all the great peasant Sicilian cuisine our momma's made from scratch (they literally woke up every morning and started the evening meal)- store bought bread??.. never had it as a kid.. take out pizza & tacos?...nope-not until I had my first job at California Donuts at 15 (inside Boys market), did I have my own money & made tacos & other "American fast food" i.e., I turned my parents on to frozen chicken pot pies for our family in 1971!.. 4 for a dollar at the Safeway where the VW dealership once was, btw, what was there before VW??. Well, I must say I did experience tacos before then... when my sister Lena c/o 64 dated Dean Williams (do you remember Williams Meat Locker in Lennox, btw?), she would come home with Taco Tio tacos for us 'kids' after their dates. That was the beginning of my love for Andy and his famous tacos, fried burritos, etc. Still can't find tacos that tasted as good as Andy's! Anyway I digress, I will get Leo's address (he's local, btw), and email it to you. He was quite the jock with his baseball talents I hear, and easy on the eyes too! What's not to like???.....He's Sicilian! :))

Message: As I read some of these great feedbacks, my mind often "flashes" back to something that happened some 45+ years ago (what did I have for breakfast this morning?).. I remember one of the fun things a few of us did was to sneak into the movie studios at night and play in the lots. One night a few of us were having a great time roaming the studio lots when a security cop showed up & captured a couple of the night commandos... since I was driving & the others thought the captured were "dead"... we scaled over the wall & split (This was way before the "No Child Left Behind rule)... When I got home late... Mom asked what moms always ask... Where have you been? What have you been doing?... Nowhere.. nuttin'... Well, a couple hours later I get a call from the captured commandos telling me to come get them... now I had to fess up before I could leave the house & retrieve their bodies... That was a tough confession, but what great times... I don't remember who the captured commandos were... Anyone out there remember??? I think I remember, but I don't want to "accuse" an innocent class mate...

I do remember in the late sixties when I visited Hawthorne Memorial Center and notice off to one side in the center a shadow box containing medals of Jim Thorpe. I do not know if these were his Olympic Medals or other medals. And didn't Jim Thorpe live in Hawthorne for awhile? I did read he passed away in your home town of Lomita in 1953, John.

The first three years, '04, '05, & '06 Team Efler took the prize. In '07 Team Guerrero/Pillar w/ LaSala. Last years tourney was postponed. Steve, Chris and I remain in contact and I have been to their Mother's home in Lake San Marcos, though I have not had the opportunity to play the course, yet. Steve, Chris, my Son and Jim Ventura ('78) play golf together now and then.

Message: Okay, okay! I've been chastised about Utah. HOWEVER, deep in my heart, I truly believe that the 2008 #1 team should have been my beloved Trojans. And, I've never been a supporter of the BCS system. I preferred the good old days when there was two polls and the AP coach's pick was always more accurate than the UP writer's favorites. Now, I'm into basketball. The Hogs knocked off Oklahoma and Texas, but we're 0-2 in SEC play. Go figure. One thing for sure, we've got a coach that both the players fear and respect. Ditto for football. Sorry, JB. I'll be silent about sports until next season. And, am I the only one who caught your Vince Young remark? LOL.

Message: Hooray for you, J.B.. For the first time we agree on the ranking of a team that deserves to be where they are! I have heard nothing but degrading remarks about the Ute's and how cush their schedule was. But like you stated to Mary Ann, beating Michigan, B.Y.U., Oregon State, and Alabama puts them where they belong. Here, Here! Mary Ann, I support the Big 12 Conference, especially when our teams are in the Bowl games, but Texas escaped with a loss against the Buckeyes. The Buckeyes had McCoy's number all night long. It would have been different if Texas wouldn't have received a ghost call on a long pass, leading to McCoy scoring. The games are over. Florida deserves No.#1 and no one could have beaten them, except maybe that team located on Figueroa and Adams. It escapes my lips. :-) Jim Sloey, poor play calling near the goal and no "Hurry Up" got us in trouble. The pain is slowly subsiding. Thank you for the sentiment. I look forward to next year and Sam's decision whether to return or leave. We need him one more year. Happy New Year to all Cougars! Have a blessed one.

Does anyone have pictures of where Marilyn Monroe lived while she was growing up in Hawthorne during the late 20?s early 30?s? I hope 2009 will be a better year than the past few years. Message: Belated Christmas and New Year to ya'll Cougars! I've been sooooooo depressed after JB bragged on the longtime wedding anniversaries. Pleeeeze! My marriages don't even add up to a silver one! LOL! Seriously, the computer and I've both been ill, but we're both getting better each day. At least I've had plenty of TV time for all the bowl games. Cousin Colt McCoy was outstanding in Texas' win, but THEY, not Utah should be knocking off Florida as I speak. The BCS system isn't perfect, but a non-member isn't qualified for ranking and their schedule was really, really cupcake - including several close calls. Boise State was a different story as the Jacobsens can confirm. Anyway, I've missed Feedback and enjoyed catching up on The Days Of Our Lives. Special blessing to you, JB - you're a special kind of glue!
