Message: John, I guess the reason I think the red Chevy is a 409 is because all serious 409's were jacked-up in front. I know it's impossible to tell for sure but if one can only just believe all things are possible. It really does look like one to me. Even though I ran Olds, the 409 was leader of the pack in the day.
Then I think it was Larry Sturkio's as he was always there.

Hey Bill, Yes Rich is on the Alumni List. You can get his email address there. Please add yourself to the list also and thanks for letting your friends know you're here. Come on back anytime.

Message: Hey John, it's been awhile since I posted anything, although I do still read the Feedback regularly. I have two questions: I have not seen anything from Denny Unfried ( 55 ) lately, is he still around and have you set a date for the next Cruise Night (need to plan my vacation around it) ????
Hey Richard, Yes, I talked to Denny today. He's still out there and has a new Cobra that I'm sure he'll show off at the next Cruise Night. Right now Cruise Night will probably be the last Saturday in February or the first Saturday in March, but you know that could change See you and Mike there.

Message: John, I've been waiting for someone to mention something regarding the Wich Stand photo. No doubt you have noticed what looks like a red 409 in the parking lot on the left side of the photo. So, who had a red one that you know? On the right side, in the middle of the parking lot, there appears to be a '56 Ford (Crown?) Victoria. These were really cool cars to fix up. I had two '55's and a '56, at different times of course. Would really like to see more old photos of the day. Best regards, Jim
Hey Jim, I was wondering if all the Feedbackers were dead I did notice what looks like a Red Chevy but how you can tell it's a 409 is beyond me. The car that caught my eye was the 64 Plymouth pulling out of the parking lot on the right side of the photo. The gas price in the picture is pretty cool too.

Message: John & Enza, The corner of Century and Hawthorne that once was the Bobs big boy is now a drug store, CVS I think. Drove past it a few nights ago and recalled going there after Gary Shambaughs and my brother Rays mutual 21st birthday party at the Shack on Aviation. Weren't you at that party Enza?
Thanks Clark

Message: John, As Jenny and I shopped tile at the island's only Home Depot we engaged a cool couple doing the same. We attempted to assist them with their tile dilemma for their West Maui condo, a distant 28 miles from our place. I offered the guy my tile tools and my free, expert advice as he politely declined to accept either, claiming he was "too far away" to borrow my prize scraper, etc. As we strolled the store chatting and seeking one he could purchase he said he coincidentally is from Laguna. I in turn pointed out that we were neighbors as I worked in Newport. Now unimpressed by my tile prowess, tool offer and former workplace he asked where I went to school. Of course my pat answer was, "Didn't everyone go to Hawthorne?" I knew I struck a cord at the sight of his 1000 yard stare and when he accused me of joking. "No way," I believe was the quote. "What year?" he continued. Turned out he was there until '65. Yes, this nice guy who's been on island twice as long as we, is from the HOOD! Names were tossed like the Litton's, Ashburn's, Mazotta, the McKinley's, Schroeder and Baker. Jim Rosen's name came up along with our beloved Tim Thomas, Halford and the Stelsie's among others. It was funny to return to the tile lane and proudly announce to the "chicks" that we were r-e-l-a-t-e-d. I guess Bob made himself quite a name in sports. He's pretty big so I was sure to watch my manners the whole time. I can get pretty mouthy, you know. Ever hear of my new buddy Bob Jenks? Please put me down for my first sighting over here. After an hour of talking we left without our tile, ending up at the Feed Store for dog food and Costco for a frozen yogurt. Another day in Maui where it can take you all day to get nothing accomplished. Thanks, Jim
Hey Jim, Great story and GREAT GREAT SIGHTING!! These sightings always amaze me, for some reason. Yep, little Bobby was the first freshman I made "shine my shoes" in his freshman year of 62 Just kidding there Bob. Thanks Jim, and Bob, please change your address on the Alumni List so you don't get away again.
Also, I just went to Cougle and searched for the cougar sighting graphic (coug-sighting.gif) and found about 155 of them and I know we had Cougar sightings before I started adding that graphic. Thanks to all for the Cougar sightings. It's just something that makes all this very special.

Message: This might be a dumb question, but, was the 'Wich' stand short for 'Sandwich'? I remember my siblings, John, Cathy, Maria, and perhaps my sister Lena c/o '64 going there, and as a young girl, I thought they were saying 'Witch' stand :)) The seventies hangouts I remember was Bob's Big Boy on Century Blvd. I don't think it's there anymore, though.
Hi Enza, Yes it was... Bob's Big Boy was turned into a soul food restaurant. Not sure if it's still there.

Message: I don't know about the rest of the year, but today ended on a good note with a Rose Bowl win by USC. De Jevu. Sad to hear about the SS Catalina. It was only a matter of time though. My first wifes aunt, Ruth, received the SS Catalina as a Valentines Day gift from her husband Hymie Singer in 1977. At a family gathering back in 1981, I told Hymie and Ruth that if they didn't want the boat, I would gladly take it and turn it into a floating restaurant/bar. They refused the offer. I think it was a tax write off for them. Anyway, a very Happy New Year to all (HHS) Cougars. Be safe!

Message: Well JB, I KNOW you are VERY happy with the USC outcome. Have you had your long noodles yet? In many Asian countries, long noodles are eaten on New Year's Day in order to bring a long life. One catch however: You can't break the noodle before it is all in your mouth. I remember growing up that every New Year's Day my mom would fix Black-Eyed Peas. She was from the south and told my brother and I that it would bring us good luck and prosperity especially when served with collard greens...it was all I could do to eat a spoonful of black-eyes much less collard greens back then, but I feel differently about them today. Guess my taste buds matured. Anyway, congrats to USC and Happy 2009 to ALL!
Was that game today? Fight On

Message: HEY! An interesting article in the BOISE STATESMAN this morning written by Brian Stelter at the New York Times News Service. He writes that Bill Lawrence, creator of SCRUBS, stated as follows: "I desperately want to do something else," said Lawrence, who is writing a sitcom pilot for ABC titled "COUGAR TOWN"!!!! JOHN! Do we know anything about this? Or is it just a coincidence of some kind?

Message: Happy New Year to all Cougars near and far. To Adrienne, we send you Cougar love and healing thoughts, to Alan big XOXO for the pleasure of your holiday poem, we raise a glass (or two) to the Rowdy girls for the inspiration of how they live their lives, special XO to Mike Backus for the sweet memories of our youth, to Joe and Lily - a spectacular and healthy 2009 (how about a wedding?), to Konnie a grateful heart for all that she gave me, to all who post here and make me smile each day, AND to those who don't but I know you're out there and your lurk is sufficient, to the multitudes of friends I have made thru this site and those I have known since kindergarten (wish I could name you all - is this sounding like an academy award speech?), to Mom and Pop who loved Steve, Sharon and me so much that they raised us in a great city called Hawthorne, to Steve and Sharon for never having sibling issues, and special love to John B for being the glue that binds us all together here - much love and lets do it all again in 2009. I'll be there.

Message: Alex and I need prayer from our Cougar family. I will be starting chemo shortly. It's the kind of cancer with no symptoms, and by the time they come, it's too late. They were looking for the cause of one unrelated problem, when they found this, so at this time it's treatable. I need prayers to change my thoughts around to positive. It's going to be a long, scary journey. Thank you.
