Message: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all Cougars, everywhere!! Congratulations, Jim S. on the grandbaby. Enza, I have spent the day with my mom and I showed her your comment about the Dental office and Dr. Johnson. She appreciates your warm, heartfelt memories and told me to pass along to you and your family a BIG, "Hello." J.B., she also wanted to help with some of the players in the photo. Even though she graduated from Leuzinger in '51, she knew a few. Especially her brother, Richard, first 4yr graduating class of Hawthorne, is in the picture as Wade suggested. Seated in the front row, wearing number 38 is Bill Trust; First row seated to the right of Paul Dowell is Don McIntire; and in the second row, seated next to Fred Miller, in white, is Dick Odgers. She is going to take the photo to Richard and have him look to see how many he remembers. It was interesting hearing her tell stories of these players. Thank you for the memories. I hope you all have a safe and healthy holiday. Remember the Reason for the Season! God Bless and Keep the Faith.
Hey Leslie, Well thanks to you and Mom for the names. I was wondering if we'd run out of anyone who could help. You too have a Merry Christmas.

Message: Mr. George Barton, I remember that name rather well, he was my counselor at Hawthorne. My brother Bill and I went through the grades together, Mr Barton was both our counselor's for all four years. During our junior year there was an unannounced contest to see who could get the most student I.D.s, there were hundreds of participants. The administration was not impressed, the photographer lost money on film, the El Molino had increased in size so the cost went up. So for our senior year the administration imposed a 3 day suspension on anyone caught having more then one I D picture taken. Just before Christmas I got a note in my 4th period class that I am to go to the office to see Mr Barton. I sat nervously in the waiting room for over 20 minutes. Finally the door opens Mr. Barton says Sloey come in and close the door. His first question was do you know why you are here? I told him that I had no idea. Then he started to explain what had happened with the I D pictures the year before and what the punishment was for having extra pictures taken. I totally agreed with him, those people should be punished. Then he laid down about a dozen picture I D s. "Do you know who this is?" he asked I did tell him that the face did look familiar. "Well do you want to tell me who that is" he said, getting very upset with me. I told him "No." Then Mr. Barton looked me square in the eyes and said I insist that you tell me who that is in those pictures." Well if you insist I will tell you, that is my brother Bill. Mr. Barton leaned back in his chair and broke up in hysterical laughter. Mr Barton said your brother was here 25 minutes ago and he said it was you. Now 40 years later I find out that Mr. George Barton was a football coach and had brothers. No wonder he was always ahead of us. God Bless you Mr. Barton you touch a lot of lives in a good way.
Thanks Jon, great story.... I'm sure there are lots of Barton Hawthorne stories out there, George and Bros.

Message: Just want to wish congrats to my dad for becoming a Grandpa. I am a grandpa 3 times already. Also, want to wish all my fellow Cougars and especially big John B a Merry Christmas and a great new year. To all the guys who collect the old cars we lowered the price of the T-bucket to $12,000. What a Christmas present it would make.
Hey Keith, Well congratulations on the grandfather thing and a Merry Christmas to you and your family too.

Message: A blessed Christmas to all my HHS friends. My daughter called to say she found the last Wii between here and SF. The store's security guard offered to walk her to her car after she paid for it! Geez, did anything cause that much of a fuss when we were kids? Glenn....I always thought they were enchiladas! Janet

Message: Mr. Sweeney, and Mrs. Hollingstead. What a pair of great P.E teachers they were-and what characters they were! They gave us life lessons that I still carry to this day. Mrs. Hollingstead stressed to us the negative effects of alcohol, not cigarettes-like Sweeney did. Greg Johnson, who was my 6th grade teacher at Washington Elementary, (his first teaching class out of college was MY class, btw, and what a class it was!), he took over and was the P.E. teacher at HIS in the 80's & 90's. When I would go by HIS back then, I would see him out on the field with his straw hat and still, 'tan bod'. He sure was a cutie when I was 12 years old-what a crush I had on him!-and he was a cutie back in the 80's as well! I had stopped in one afternoon to say hi, and he STILL remembered me and my siblings-even my father, whose stories of the 'old country' he still recalled. I'll never forget: Mr. Johnson, Mrs. Frazier (5th grade), Mrs. Donahue (1st grade..what an angel!), and my kindergarten teacher Mrs. Hopkins), the most caring, coolest teachers at Washington Elementary. Wade,Wade, Wade. I think you have some stories of how Mrs. Donahue had you run laps....not knowing that at the tender age of 6, you were a potential Varsity football player at HHS. Merry Xmas to all Cougars! My Xmas wish: "Peach On Earth, Good Will Towards Man".....(is that too much to ask??) :))
Merry Christmas Enza

Message: John-Merry Christmas to you and all Cougartowners! And Paco, I too have been busy making tamales with my mother-in-law. Chicken, chili & cheeze, pork and beef. We have it down to an art-form - invite all the teenagers over and put them on the assembly line! By the time we're done, it should be over 25 dozen! Hard work, but wonderful family time together. John, the site looks terrific. In closing, I'd like to say a remembrance for Lynn Matteson, one of our Vietnam casualties. We buried him 40 years ago today. He was a special person from my childhood in Hawthorne, and I always think fondly of him during the holidays. Happy Holidays to everyone. Betty Kean-Rodriguez
Hi Betty, Thanks very much and Merry Christmas and Happy Tamales to you.

Message: I was just thinking about Sweeney the other day. He was still there by the time I made it to HIS. I had him for "Health"! He had us all roll fake cigarettes that we got to "smoke" for a couple of weeks. At the end of it, he launched into the negative health effects and told us that the fake cigarettes were the last ones he ever wanted us to "smoke." I don't know how effective that was, but it was memorable. Happy holidays everyone.
We learned about girls in Health and why they got so crabby

Message: To John and all of Cougartown, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and best wishes for the holiday season! John, Cougartown looks better than ever. Great job, my friend! And to my best friends (most of them Cougars) who have been there with me this year though all the health issues, thank you and God bless. 2009 will definitely be better! There are better days coming, and a lot more songs yet to be sung! Like the sign that hung in our locker room so many years ago; ?A team that won?t be beaten can?t be beaten?, there?s a lot of healing in a positive attitude! Take care, Cougs, and Happy Holidays!
AMEN to that Bob. Be well, Have a Merry Christmas and seeing the 0 and 25 record of the Cougars the last few years, they must've taken the sign down

Message: This is kinda for Rick McKelvey who posted here Dec 18, 2008 at 7:13 p.m. Mr Sweeney was my coach in the 7th grade at Hawthorne Intermediate. He was tough but, fair with the broods he had to work with. You didn't mess around with Mr. Sweeney. I recall he drove a '55 Chevy Bel-Air 2 door hardtop, yellow/white with green interior. Mr. Sweeney had what some nowadays would call a 'buzz cut' or hair cut short no combing, nothing falling in his eyes. He kept us physically active when we were out of the classroom and onto field for "Phys-Ed." A Very Merry Christmas to Mr. Sweeney & all the other Hay-Towners out there.
Hi Jim, I think anyone who attended Intermediate or Ramona in those days remembers Mr. Sweeney. He was a no nonsense guy that helped lots of young athletes get started, especially if they liked to run laps Merry Christmas Jim
