Message: That picture could have been one of "many" of the earlier teams who played football at HHS, including the HELMETS. My brother was a JR. in 1956-57, I was a freshman and playing B's as well as him and he was grad class of 58 . I was a 13 year old Frosh playing at that time. We also had no face BAR, or mask. You have to remember that the California High School Federation had weight, height and age limits at that time in order to qualify for your age groups so you didn't play kids out of their realm. Therefore the difference in age, my brother was 16. But it was a challenge when your older brother and his friends were on the same team and you were the practice fodder for their contribution to HHS football. I got continually forearmed by a guy named Rudy Lanham, a Senior, to my lips and because of his weight class, was playing B's, in my face, no face mask at all, that my lips were always split, one way or the other. I always wanted to kick his butt and the other friends of my brother but I needed a little growing in the mind at that time to allow me to do it. But the Helmets...no face guard at all, until the next year and ONE bar made you invincible. Therefore, Cougartown history was made. 25-8-1, in 4 years! 7 of the losses in one year for the class of " SIXTY ". Not too bad for the good guys. And that, my friends, is history. MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU! Jake N Jude.

Message: Hey, Crotty; LOL, that was real football. The first year I played "C" football, that is what we were issued. Hand me downs from the earlier teams. We were at the bottom of the food chain and didn't care, (well some did), as long as we had equipment. In most cases, there weren't even any face guards, causing a few broken noses and loose teeth during practice and games. John Boy, great picture, brings back good memories.
We used to refer to the old leather helmets as "Coconuts", because that what the looked like and sounded like when they impacted each other.

Message: I've seen a variety of postings about snow - Las Vegas etc. Yes, winter is here, even if it's not yet "official". Hopefully, the winter season won't bring to you what it brought to us in New Hampshire. Last Thursday night we were the unfortunate recipients of the worst ice storm to hit the northeast in a very long time. We lost power around midnight on Thursday and it finally came back on around 9pm on Tuesday. On Friday, there were approximately 420,00 homes with no electricity in NH. There were more in Vermont, Mass, Maine & upstate New York. Today, it's down to around 65,000 in NH. No electricity means a bit more here than it might in other places. For the most part, we have wells in lieu of public water which means no water to drink, flush etc. We lost phone service and cell service (our local cell tower was damaged during the storm). Most of NH relies on fuel oil for heating - no natural gas. With no electricity, we can't run our furnaces. In order to keep our pipes from freezing (we used forced water to heat our homes), we had to keep fires burning in the fireplace 24/7, which meant getting up every 2 hours all night to keep it burning. The interior temperature in our house on Monday was 38 degrees. So, enjoy the snow, and hope for no ice! And, I'm not going to apologize for this - MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!! (The heck with happy holidays.... :)

Message: Seeing the 61 Christmas Dance Picture brought back me back to 1960's Christmas Dance. Every year we hang a Gold bulb on the Tree which has the year and our names on it. They gave them to us when we all had are pictures taken. We have been married 46 years and that special bulb has a place right at the top with a few other special ones. I bet there are alot of other couples who married their High School Sweethearts who have those special bulbs too! I know we are silly, but Christmas brings us back to our youth where the special Memories of Family, Friends and the special cooking that went on around that time and seeing all the decorations, oh yes, can not forget all the family get togethers all the fun on Christmas Eve and/or Christmas day, this all comes back to us. We wish everyone a MERRY CHRISTMAS..ALWAYS A COUG
