Message: I think they just closed the Las Vegas airport because of snow. It is a blizzard here. People think I am weird cause I am wearing shorts. The strip is covered with snow
I heard on the radio that it's snowing in Malibu. Wasn't that place on fire about a month ago? Weird weather....

Message: Hey, John Boy; I was looking at the 1961 dance picture you posted with my wife Arlene. We were both laughing, most of the girls in the picture look like "Stepford wives", all with the same style Beehive hair doo's. Arlene couldn't laugh to much though, because she sported one of those doo's herself back in the 60's.
Yep, I think they all did. It's funny though as a picture taken today will be laughed at 15 years from now.

Message: HEY CINDY! Talk to me after you've been in the snow winter after winter for almost 40 years. Actually, I still love the snow, that is, if it's not TOO much. Got 5" all of yesterday and it was gorgeous. However, it's cleared up today and is coooooooold! Incidentally, John ... is anyone going to put names with the '61 Christmas Dance photo? Sure would be nice.
Hey Doris, These are the ones I can remember. Anyone else?

Message: Johnny B.: Jimmy's entry has a direct connection to HHS...it's Hawthorne humor at it's finest! You should have heard some of his comedic rants in the dugout during baseball games...even more so when he was the starting pitcher! After the game, most of the team was broke. A 10 cent fine was levied against those who laughed, and it got pretty costly! Evidently, Coach Semon didn't share the same sense of humor. Maybe that's why we were only a 3rd place team! But, we did have a pretty decent year-end team party with all the fines we generated! - Gibby -
Hey Gib, Jim's dad was my LL coach (Optimidgets). Jim's bro, JB, was a team member with little Jimmy coming along a year or so later. Jimmy would come to the games and was our good luck mascot. Before each game we'd all rub his face and slap his butt. . . . . . . .or maybe it was the other way around. Anyway, if it wasn't for little Jimmy finding Ctown those would have been the very last memories I'd have of the little tyke. Thanks Gib, for the memory flogger.

Message: To Jimmy Schroeder: I think you inadvertently overlooked those "teepee" shaped hat bills...you know, the ones that were creased or folded at the apex of the bill? I know you have a perfectly logical explanation for that configuration, right? Also, many people assume football's Buffalo Bills took their name from the famous Mr. Cody. What, exactly, is the REAL story behind the name? - Gibby -
Hey Jimmy, I hope it pertains to Hawthorne or HHS

Message: I see we've moved on pictorially, but as the foremost authority on hat bill history, I feel compelled to address the issue. The first hat bill can be traced back to 16th century Romania where an itinerant farmer, William the Itinerant, was plowing the rocky Romanian soil behind his prize ox, Shizzel. This poor ox had developed a spastic sphincter, from a steady diet of jimson weed and dirt clods. William sought to alleviate the occasional poop-eye by duct-taping a small square of Birch bark to his beanie (to clarify for the nay-sayers -- Leonardo DaVinci did develop the propeller beanie and duct-tape in 1611 -- a busy year for Leo). William wore his splattered beanie w/attached bark visor into the village of Cruznef, primarily to purchase lava soap at the Grange. A boyhood chum, Samuel the Chumster, upon seeing William's bizarre headgear declared, "what do you call that, Bill?" Hence the name, beanie-bill, which evolved into hat-bill. The practice of pulling the corner of the bill down at a rakish angle to the right or left side was developed by the radical fringe of the Optimist Club. Pulling the bill down to the right was a sign that there was a secret meeting at the hotel on 5th Street in Billings Montana, or that you had just contributed 7 bundles (or more) of papers to the Eucalyptus paper drive. Pulling the hat down to the left side was either the sign of your political affiliation, or an indication of confusion. Today's common practice of wearing a backward facing bill, is not a fashion statement, but a sure sign that your head is reversed. The straight forward bill, made popular by Moochie Corcoran, is an indication of level-headedness, but can be interpreted as a lack of ambition. The secret ceremony of placing a baseball card of your favorite player in the front sweat band of your baseball cap, to facilitate an erect logo, was invented by Sonny Lubow of the Sky Hawks a Hawthorne LL team in the late 50's. If you used Micky Mantle in your hat you are now out $900, which is the current value for said card. Hope I cleared that up. Happy Holidays.
Man that's a relief, I saved Mickey's card in favor of Nap Lajoie

Message: In response to Robin Hood's question below...Where's Mike Babineau's dad (Wayne Babineau) in the photo? Top row, 3rd from right. At ages 10 through 14 or 15, Mike's dad would have me come over after school and pitch to him in his driveway. He taught me wind-up mechanics...how to throw a curveball...and how to pitch to spots. Later, at El Camino College & then Cal State Northridge, their pitching coaches were teaching the same things Mr. Babineau taught me early on! The guy knew his stuff! (By the way, for those interested, Mike & wife Julie are still in Hawthorne, living in the house Mike grew up in!- Gibby -

Message: Speaking of the cocked hats....I remember seeing a picture of my Uncle Buster (Herman Hahlbeck of Inglewood) in uniform and sure enough he had that cocked hat thing going on. Must have been a fad back then. Oh we are getting our fare share of snow here!!! Not sure if I like it that much. I tell people I have a California attitude....I like to go to the snow, not have it come banging on my front door.....The Sandia Mountains are very close....I love the snow there...Its beautiful...but in the city, it melts, gets all over everything, tires make s slushy gray mess...then it freezes...forget that! I guess I shouldn't complain I took 3 days off from work....I can stay home and look at it from the window...I miss southern California a lot...especially when we get a lot of snow!!!!

Message: Funny my classmate Carl noticed the cocked hats too! I was going to venture my own theory about that look. I have a ton of WWII stuff and alot of the soldiers wore their uniform hats like that, I'm guessing that since this photo was taken in '52, alot of those couriers were WWII vets...hence the "look."

Message: I remember our mail man when I was around 4, but I can not put a face on him....I lived on 122nd st, by the HS. I wonder if Andy Gutierrez was the same mailman in 1954? I rememer being about 4 years old and every day I'd run outside to get the mail before he could get to the porch...It was around lunch time and I would always have a white milk moustache. The mail man would always tease me. Once in awhile I would have a chocolate milk moustache and he would always say something. I remember the milkman coming by too...He would bring us 2 bottles of milk. He also treated the kids to ice in the summer. I think it was a Adohr Farms truck. When my ex and I lived on 110th I remember seeing the milkman, Golden Crust, one of the Ice Cream trucks, and on Fridays there was a Fish truck.....Wonder if the kids called him the fish man then?

Message: I get a kick out of the way some of the postal employees in the picture wear their hats cocked off to one side. (Especially top row 2nd and 4th from the right) As I recall this was a fashion statement in the 50's probably borrowed from Brando or Sinatra. Kind of like today's kids who wear their pants low so that you see half of their skivies. A parent in the 50s would tend to be more leary of letting their daughters date a guy who wore his hat like that. Merry Christmas to all!

Message: Thank you Ed Carpenter. I grew up on 8th street. We lived in the second house from the corner of 138th Street. I thought that was our mailman, but I honestly never knew his name. I remember when he got married and bought the house that faced 138th Street. I remember when he started having a family and how he meticulously took care of his yard and garden. I also remember when he started getting gray hair and had to wear glasses. He was so friendly and wholesome. Thanks for jarring the old noggin. And to Paco, yes we did get two mail deliveries a day during the holiday season. People sent cards and letters back then, lots of them - remember. Now we call or e-mail. It's just different. I really prefer being able to talk to the people that I want to wish a Merry Christmas to. Besides cards are not ecologically friendly, are they? But back then we certainly weren't concerned about saving the forests, were we. Anyway Cougars, have a great time during the Christmas season and may you all have a safe and happy New Year! Message: Regarding the Post Office Pic: There sure are a lot of square jawed, handsome young men out there that could of been models!...and some of the folks look like the mid-westerners that could of just came off the farm. (Grapes of Wrath comes to mind). Great pic. I wish I could recall our mailman, but my memory does not serve me well in that area. However, the Helms bakery man??... I have no problem recalling...we always waited for him everyday to get our sugar fix! It's just about priorties I guess...lol! :)) And... To Jake and Jude: You may take comfort in knowing that many of us here in Cougartown are praying for our men and women overseas fighting a war for us to be safe and sound here in America. I will light a candle in his honor...

Message: John; In your response to Larry Biller, you said "it fells like snow here." Well it been snowing here in Klamath Falls for two days and it will do the same all this week. I looked on your site and it's 54 degrees in Hawthorne as opposed to 17 degrees in Klamath. Now that feels like snow. Sure wish I was back in Hawthorne, for your warm weather.
You got me Pat. I was lying.
