Message: Judy is right about Alex the mailman being top row, fifth from the left. My grandfather would invite him in for a cold lemonade in the summer months. He was also invited to take a break and watch Sandy Koufax and the Dodgers play. Those were good days. And Cindy you were right about Gene Gutierrez' oldest brother being your handsome, "built like a brick", "blue-black hair" mailman. Speaking of the Gutierrez', does anyone remember the other siblings, Gene, Mary, Vicky, John, or Pete? Does anyone remember Bill Bass who lived next door, East of the Gutierrez'? Bill had a '53(?) Lincoln that was painted flat primer black, really cool for those days.

Message: For some reason I am not able to see the picture of the Mail delivery people but I remember our mailman, his name was Andy Gutierrez I must have been all of five years old or so, I would sit on the porch and wait for the mail. Andy was the most handsome man I have ever seen, he had hair so black that it was blue, he was built like a brick (well you know the rest), I would just sit there and stare at him. I believe he was the older brother of Mary and Gene Gutierrez c/o 63. Cindy

Message: The picture of the 1952 Hawthorne Post Office crew is fascinating for many reasons. This WWII "Greatest Generation" group who filled these jobs appear proud and grateful to have a decent honest paying job. It is not hard to imagine how the 1950s economic boom and era of well being happened. Fifty years later, Hawthorne and the nation have changed radically. Could you get a group of Postal workers to come dressed in coat and tie to a group picture these days? Granted the guys in the top row don't look so hot with the govt issue black tie that doesn't extend past your sternum. Maybe I am reading too much into the picture, but to me it documents a lot of changes in our culture, and I am not talking race or affirmative action which are obvious differences. I think it has to more to do with a positive attitude toward work missing today, even before the economy went sour.

Message: First of all, I had a Cougar sighting at Fountain Valley High and that was my Uncle Wade. We are both coaches now, but different sports. I have to say that along with my Dad, Coach Minami has been my biggest influence as a coach. Everytime I step on the field I bring his values and commitment with me. I have to end with a big GO SOONERS!!! I know that Grandpa Greasby has a big smile on his face!!! Time for a Dr Pepper...OK Coors.
Hey Craig, not sure that counts as a Cougar Sighting. Thanks for the Coach Minami thoughts though, as I know he was a great Coach and mentor, and is very well thought of by his students/players.

Message: Mike Shay brought back terrible memories for me -SISTER EDWARD from St. Joseph's. WAB. This woman hated the male gender. She was about six feet tall and probably weighed in around 210. I remember her picking up two of my male classmates by the shirts, one in each hand, and shaking them both like rag dolls. Don't remember who they were; might have been Mike Shay. Merry Christmas Merry Christmas

Come on Cougs, Paco needs your Christmas pics for the Christmas Pacos Pics edition. That's what I mean about you Cougs being the ones who make Cougartown interesting. With today's technology, just whip out the cell phone camera, take a picture of your "Christmasey stuff", and send it to Paco at doo4usc@cox.net
If you have a scanner, scan an old Christmas picture and do the same. We need your pictures NOW as Christmas is days away.

Message: The picture of the recent celebration of Hawthorne High's '53 football team was GREAT! Is it just me or does Coach Chauncey look very much the same as he did 50+ years ago ... okay with a little added weight and less hair, but other than that, THE SAME!!! ??? What's your secret Coach? And I didn't know Paco was a Marine! GOSH JOHN! Thank you SO MUCH for this Cougartown venue! I have met so MANY wonderful people I would have never known existed if it were not for you! And I've touched bases with old, OLD friends from the 50's and even 40's because of you! YOU ARE ONE OF MY HEROS JOHN! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.doris
No Doris, Thanks YOU!! Yes the Ol' Coach looks just the same. In fact he looks younger now than some of his players

Message: Thanks Mathew for your concern. Things are very bad here. The rioting has been going on for five days without stop. It has affected almost everyone, especially psychologically. There is a combination of ingredients going on to cause the situation. The worst thing was the cold blooded murder of a 15 year old by the police, who was apparently just out for the evening to celebrate with some friends. This has turned into looting by the poor and demonstrations against our conservative government. Who would have believed that a conservative government could have done a worse job than the socialists? The economic situation is dire for most people here as I know it is in the USA. I just hope that today will be quieter, but since there is going to be a national strike, I sort of doubt it. Again, thanks for your concern and I hope that this non HHS message is okay. Take care Cougars, Jim Peppers

Message: John, your picture of the '53 HHS Team and your invitation to add on brings me to write this note. There were several guys I wanted to meet at that reunion. Joe was the man and still might be the man when it comes to HHS football. More important to me was to meet Coach Bill Cooper of Mira Costa HS. Bill was the son of Phoebe Cooper who worked in the HHS snack bars for years and we all knew her. When I played at HHS we had a knock down drag out game at MCHS and we were told that Coach Cooper was not happy when some of us were still in the game for the second half. Point is we thought he must be a very tough customer. So I met him at the reunion, the nicest guy in the world. My good friends kid is a MCHS student and he insisted I have her come by to see him in his office. She is a member of the Golf team and he congratulated her on her full ride to Boise State to play golf. The "OLD COACH" built men out of boys and it was apparent when you talked to this crew.
Hey Gary, You are so right. Thanks for the note....
