PS-Greg Lynn- re- Beach Boys Surfboard Interest from Cougars...Well Sir, could be it was a post-era short board, had you offered a serious collector's type longboard made from one of the local South Bay area old time board makers...Well, those signatures would have been attached to a real authentic item. Too bad the "brains" at Tone soap did not do their homework. Here at HHS Cougartown it's all about the homework!

Message: Crotty, our Broncos are fledglings in this world of 1A football. They are building a progam here, good students, good athletes and as coach Pete has said, as well as the fore fathers before him, they are going to recruit bigger and faster, stronger, educated kids with character and that is what our coaches have brought this program over last ten or twelve years. To where it is. If one of these kids screw up they're benched or suspended, Coach Pete will never elaborate on the incident. Will not involve the person or family to anyone. Class guy. Move them to the PAC 10, Big 12 and they would probably lose three or four games a year. Known fact! But look! they have gained a national reputation with their outlook and resolve. Sorry JB for the rant or blog and I "friggin" hate that word BLOG. "Conversation" might be a term that most of use, and educated in Hawthorne feel that it might be proper. it's just a synonym for BLOG! And as "I say, Blog SUCKS" !!! But, John C.. thanks for the Cudos. Well deserved by the kids. And by the way, every football stadium should have the energy, that BSU does on game day. Autsem Stadium (Robin would know the spelling on this and I refuse to Google) in OR, maybe I didn't spell it right, but is one of the greatest for crowd noise in the nation. BSU won there with a frosh QB and frosh "O" line. But the world turns! MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU. My lovely wife of 48 years is telling me there are more important things than C-Town! Jake N Jude.

Message: Emily Wolverton - 1st Grade Teacher at Eucalyptus Elementary turns 99 in January, 2009. My mom, Emily Wolverton, was a first grade teacher at Eucalyptus Elementary School in the 40s, 50s and 60s. I know that a few of my class mates had her as their first grade teacher. She is about to turn 99 on January 25, 2009 and I was wondering if anyone would like to send her a birthday card. She is still quite alert and would love to hear from former students or anyone else from Hawthorne. Two people I know from the Class of 65, Maureen Grogan and Joyce Woods, would be special to hear from. Maureen had Mom as a teacher as always stop in for a visit and Joyce was a neighbor who then took over Mom's class room #1 when she retired. Her address is: Mrs. Emily Wolverton Hillcrest - Woods Assisted Living Facility 2705 Mountain View Drive - La Verne, CA 91750 Much appreciated, Rich Wolverton Cougar '65

Message: This is in response to Mr. Greg Lynne's post of Dec. 5th and today. He seems to want one of us Cougars to bid on a surf board that was signed by the Beach Boys. It seems that no Cougar had bid on the board so he is saying we "don't care" about the Beach Boys. Doesn't this man know that people are losing their jobs, having a hard time making their house payments, putting food on the table for their families, etc. I guess he thinks we should just put all this aside and bid on his surf board. My word to Mr. Lynne, we at Cougartown do love our Beach Boys, but in this trying time we need to take care of our families first not waste our hard earn money on a signed surf board by the Beach Boys. And is this guy a Hawthorne High grad????

He is just the same, very kind, very interested in everything and they are both still very very nice people. Bruce and I talked with him about Emile und die Detective for several minutes promising to do a translation or two on Monday. It was a great 30 minute visit and as you can see he is getting ready for the Tour de France next July.

Message: Like Cliff, It was great to see that old picture. Les, that also is my dream car. Two of my favorite things, a "59" El Camino and in the background, the old McKelvey homestead on Burl Ave. Notice the color coordination between the house and the water tower. The only turquoise house in Hawthorne? What were my parents thinking! The tan house on the corner was the Brown's house, Sheri, Rick and John. At that same time, my Dad also had a "59" Impala with a "409" under the hood, black also. I could name the kid's in the neighborhood, but John doesn't have the bandwidth. Thanks again for the great picture Les. That's also how I remember Hawthorne.

Message: Les Ward's picture is terrific. That little moment in time is just as I remember Hawthorne looking. AND there is a whole car show happening in the process. Not only Les' 59 El Camino (wow wouldn't you like to be the owner of that car right now) I also see a 49 or 50 Ford Custom in the background. Looks like it might be a Convertible by the angle of the windshield. In front of the Ford it appears to be a 47-50 Plymouth (Maybe a Dodge) that was famous for their air scoops right in front of the windshiled that could be opened and closed by a lever in the dash area. Finally check out the 57 Chevy in the far background. Now those were cars!

Message: Hey Carl, (pg.1094) That 59 El Camino was mine (pictured). The picture shows it parked in front of my mom's house on 123rd St. You can see the water tower just over the drivers seat. I bought it just after graduation in 1958. It had a 315 hp 348 w 3/2s, a four speed, positraction, and was the first one sold in LA county. I used to pal around with Jerry Hopkins (Red 49 Ford with a T-Bird engine.) That's it for now Aloha, Les

Since I was laid off last month, I too am looking for any job to meet my TWO mortgages that are a bit of a challenge at this time without an income coming in. Anyone out there need any help??...I can wear many hats. :)) Caregiving was my last job, but I excell in administration & have many years experience with Airline/Travel reservation agent. I'm an Antiques Dealer (My passion!!), however no one has any disposable cash these days. Estate sales are great to work at since I am knowledgable with many vintage/antiques, but these days everyone is just struggling just to put food and gas in their cars. Oy Vai....perhaps the new administration will give us some hope for the future regarding jobs. I hope so!!!
