Message: Paco...four, five and six lots west of Johnny Arnold's yard were vacant lots until the late 50's when three new homes were built. These lots may be the lots Gary is remembering. The Arnold's lot was big but I don't remember many of us playing in his yard as most of us were afraid of their dog, Cross, even though the dog was behind a fence. I remember us kids calling out to the Arnold house to come retrieve an errant ball that made its way into their yard. We weren't very brave back then; bravery only came when we rode our bikes recklessly down the hill on 132 Street, east and west of Ramona, heading to Phil's Bike Shop. Many skinned knees and elbows from some awesome crashes on that hill! I also remember playing in a vacant lot close to Bobby Bausman's house on 129 Street...a lot where I stepped on a nail that punctured my Keds and finding its way into my foot. Who would have guessed that that nail could have been an early version of a pungi stick, something some of us were in fear of fifteen years later. Great memories of childhood and our block on 132 Street.
Loved those vacant lots. Seems like they were put there for us kids. In the winter they might be lakes to float your hand made boats or pull the winter rye clumps to throw. In the summer they were converted to football or baseball fields. Or to dig your very own foxholes or forts. Without them, something has been lost from today's childhood.

Message: Saw my first Ram game when I was 4-1/2. And many more. Lots of sports memories from the Olden Days .... Dodgers and Lakers, too. Still love Raiders no matter where they are, especially now that Jack's back. Angry? Mike Love angry? He never fit in at Dorsey and latched onto our Beach Boys. Wish he'd just go away. Wonder how much he paid Rolling Stones to print that garbage? LOL.

Message: Just felt compelled to comment on the recent passing of Steve Fisher ('71) Although five years older than me I met Steve on a number of occasions. Steve was the kind of guy who made you proud to say you went to HHS. Highly successful and respected in his field, Steve maintained his karate studio on Inglewood Ave. through good times and bad in Hawthorne. He helped countless people and is a huge loss to the alumni of HHS. RIP Steve.

Message: Hi John, No war the Hawks are just darn good! Loved watching them this season but not so much when the Panthers went to the Super Bowl. Believe they'll get there in SB '51 if QB Wilson plays from the start as he did in the ProBowl waiting around for the fourth quarter to make winning plays nearly gives me a heart attack! And, John, you are the only one that has ever called me by my first and middle name and I love this since I will always know it's you! And, I don't know nothin' else.
I seems like we all called you Billie Jean at Intermediate. Go Rawks.

Message: Okay, I'll answer my own question for all of you excited Rams football fans. There's a 1.86 billion stadium project in the works for Inglewood CA for the Rams to be built by 2019. In the meantime, the Rams are scheduled to play at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum which is operated by USC. The decision for the Raiders or Chargers to join the Rams in L.A. still hasn't been determined. It will cost the taxpayers in San Diego to keep their Chargers. Die hard Rams fans will want to save their flight travel miles, since the Rams have a scheduled game against the Giants in London at Twickenham Stadium. My Seattle Hawks are happy they won't be traveling to "cold" Saint Louis Missouri to play the Rams. So....please give my Hawks a great big Cougar welcome when they beat the Rams in L.A., okay?
OK then, are you trying to start a Rams Seahawks war, Billie

Message: From the Long Beach Press Telegram: Hawthorne singer-songwriter Emitt Rhodes makes brilliant return 43 years later heard from Emitt Rhodes 43 years ago, when he released his fourth solo album, Farewell to Paradise. The longtime Hawthorne resident's sterling solo work, as well as his tenure as leader of 1960s hit makers The Merry-Go-Round of You're a Very Lovely Woman and Live fame, have made him a cult figure over the decades. Producer Chris Price hooked up with Rhodes in 2013, and encouraged him to record again. Rhodes, who famously played all the instruments on both of his solo albums, recruited a batch of terrific musicians for Rainbow Ends, which comes out Friday.

Message: John, Tried your BBQ Pete's Slaw Dressing - perfectly delicious. Here's a drink from the past some of you may recall, the Orange Julius that was sold in shopping malls and tastes like the 50/50 ice cream bars sold in the late fifties at York School (or, creamsicles as they are called now). Need; 6 ounce can of frozen orange juice concentrate, 1 cup milk, 1 cup water, 1/4 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and 8 ice cubes. Place in a blender and blend. Pour into a glass and enjoy. Super Bowl "51" Win! Go Hawks!
Hey Billie Jean, I loved those Orange Julius drinks. Will try this one for sure. Thanks for the recipe and Go Hawks!!

HOPE to see any Cougars who drop in for an improptu HHS mini Reunion, at the beach on May22, see ya then.

Message: Things are not looking good for a class reunion for 1966. What happened to the Class of 66 Senior officers (Pres, VP, Secy, etc), thought they were the ones that would keep things going. Maybe I'm wrong. Wish I would have tried harder to go the '65 reunion, guess that goes to show you, you shouldn't wait. If I lived closer I would volunteer to help, I know some of the people on the last reunion would like to help, we just need a leader. Someone out there from 1966 must still live in the Hawthorne area?!?

Message: The Rams taught me to never ever leave any game early. My uncles would take me to games all of the time and once my uncle Joe took me to see them play the Lions. Fourth quarter and the Lions were up 21-7 so my uncle said let's go and beat the traffic. By the time we got through the tunnel it was 21/14, when we reached the car it was 21-21 and, as we pulled out onto the street, the Rams won 28-21. I swore I would never leave a game, any game, early ever again!

Message: Valentines Day, the day every young man's mind will focus on humiliation. Never a big deal by the time we got to HHS; at Trinity Lutheran it was a big deal. I remember your status was directly relayed to the number of cards you got from your classmates. By the time we got to HHS it was sports, cars and threads. But in the back of my mind was always the 8th grade cards.

Message: Hello, anyone excited about the Rams coming home? I have only watched one Rams game since they left, hoping they would lose in the Super Bowl. Back in the day that's all we had, no Dodgers, Lakers or Kings. We did have the Stars, Angels, and SC. Also remembers taking the streetcar with Kenny, Bobby and Billy or a father taking us, it was almost as much fun trying to find cheap parking, mostly on someone's lawn.. I'm really happy, any stories?
Need stories here folks. Go Rams!
