Message: Wow... I just found about 50 tickets on my front porch. All of them are for the Haw. Historical Soc. Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, Feb 27th. (now, how did those get there JB??) So, I'm officially selling them and I do believe you can purchase yours at the sight on that day. I don't want to know what will happen if I don't sell them. A last note: Contacted Karen Graham Kuehl yesterday, and she's in very good spirits. If you know her, then give her a call or an email as I'm sure she'd like to hear from as many friends as possible. What a trouper she is.
DO NOT SELL TICKETS!! There's yet another message on your machine (why are people afraid to answer their phones). Take those tickets to the VFW and hand them out. People can bring the ticket and pay the day of the breakfast.

Message: Happy BD to Janet Burkett, Looks like we'll be seeing you in May, when we all can pop the cork in some place other than SoCal. We'll make it a duo birthday with Glenn and yourself and double up on everything. As for Norma Jean Leonard... ha ha ha ha ha.. since it's been 15 years that we've known Lee and we've 'never, never' met Norma, it's safe to say that she doesn't exist. I've seen him getting on the freeway with a blow up doll in the passenger seat, but that's doesn't constitute marriage. Do not send Norma a birthday gift..she just simply isn't real. Oh, see all the Haw Historical Committee at the pancake breakfast on Feb 27. Lee, make me a liar..bring Norma!!!
Happy Birthday Janet!! And Judy, Norma Jean really does exist. I saw her once.
YES, the Hawthorne Historical Pancake Breakfast will be February 27th at the Museum from 8am to Noon. Pancakes sausage, bacon, juice and coffee. for only 5 bucks. Come on out and see the museum and your friends. We'll have raffle prizes too.

Message: Ha! I forgot about Cad. I think it was a '69, Coupe d'ville; great old "Land Yacht"! I had Brandy then (my great German Shepard. Sweetest dog in the world). I used to make her sit in the back, but she really wanted to be up front where she could see the world better. I remember driving one beautiful day with my left hand on the wheel and my right hand stretched out and resting on the passenger seat. Brandy decided she wanted a better view so she put her feet on the console and pushed her head under my arm. It took me a minute or two to realize what she had done. But when I did, I had to quickly yank my arm back. I'm sure passing drivers must have gotten a good laugh out of that scene!!

Message: Bob Clobucker, thanks for the memory jog! One of my favorite "cars of old" was my '66 Nova. A really sweet little 2-door 6 cylinder that I bought in '67. Lots of good memories of trips with my young family. Of course I've also spoken before of the fun we had in the '31 Chev Coupe that I bought from John Baker's dad. ...my '49 Ford, the '53 Olds convertible, my '53 Buick Century!! My gosh, I wish I had all of those cars today. I don't think I paid over $300 for any of them except the Nova.
I liked your mid 60s Caddy too man.

Message: Just passing thru to say Im still kicking and say hello! Speaking of our old "cars", I love my 1964 CJ5 Jeep! I had it shipped back from Kauai and love driving it here in Arizona! Here in Az, a lot of folks have the razors and side by sides etc, But when i drive into town with my CJ i get a lot of compliments and hear how they love Jeeps. "It's a Jeep thing you wouldn't understand" one of the slogans for Jeeps. As for you "Hot Rod dudes" I've always enjoyed your cars! and the hours of work that goes into them and that goes for you low riders as well! But what i dislike is the "pretender" One who bought someone's rod or low rider and drives around like they did all the work or take the credit. I know a few right here in Cougar town. The same goes for dudes who buy motorcycles and pretend to be some kind of "Bad Ass" and try and look like one , LMAO! Grow Up! Anyway , I wish ya all well and look forward to seeing your cars at a car show here in Az! But don't let me find out you bought that car that some else worked on so hard and take credit for it!
I love'm all. Thanks Jim for checking in and get that Jeep out in the desert dirt.

Message: Old Haytown friendships are worth their weight in gold. Just talked to my ol bro Bob Straube HHS 74. This whole trip only happens once in a lifetime. The older we get the more profound it all becomes. Lets face it Cougs we are closer to the end than the beginning. Makes me feel young again driving around in my old 73 Nova, tunes blasting, tires howling pissing off the younger folks driving priuses etc. Within the parameters of highway safety of course. An old car but I tell you what, I get a lot of comments mostly positive about the old ride. Inliners Forever!! Bob C. 73.
Hey Bob, NICE RIDE DUDE!! Come on car guys, let's hear something from you.

Message: Okay, Dodger stories! While waiting to be hired as a fireman, I once drove a delivery van for United Sporting Goods. A customer came in to purchase a basketball and was paying with a check. The manager asked to see I.D. and the customer replied, "It's my check. I'm Joe Moeller." The mgg politely repeated, "I'll have to see some I.D." Frustrated, the customer added, "I'm Joe Moeller, I pitch for the Dodgers." Once again the store mgr insisted, "Okay well, I need to see some identification." As I recall, Joe left the store and the basketball, I imagine, remains by the cash register. He also was pretty big but that night apparently wasn't "Dunking" in his back yard.
I have a Dodger story. Mike Shay HHS61, Tom Shelley HHS62 and I owned a company called SBS Industries from mid 70s to mid 80s. We manufactured and sold Dodger license plate frames to Danny Goodman concessions at the stadium. Some of you probably owned one or two back in the day.

Message: From the Daily Breeze: Soccer Teams Win! HAWTHORNE >> On one end of the field Saturday, Hawthorne High's players celebrated, their white jerseys soiled with dirt and grass stains. On the other, Animo's players crouched down in despair, pulling their navy blue jerseys over their faces. Hawthorne took the El Clasico title, taking down Animo 2-0 in a heated boys soccer rivalry match with a playoff atmosphere. The game turned on a critical five-minute stretch in the second half that started when Animo's Marco Osorno was ejected after getting a second yellow card in the 57th minute. Just minutes later, Jose Perez went up for a ball in the air and collided with Hawthorne keeper Salvador Ontiveros. Perez fell to the ground at Hawthorne's HalCap Field and lost consciousness for about a minute, Animo coach Sergio Medrano said. Perez, wearing a neck brace, was carried off the field on a stretcher by paramedics and taken to a local hospital.
GO Hawthorne!! Isn't using Halcap field for soccer, sacrilegious?

Message: There is a lengthy article in the Tuesday NY Times, visible to everyone at nytimes.com, on the revitalization by an El Segundo company of the "worn-out" Redondo Beach pier area, which was once the port of LA. I thought that the Long Wharf at the bottom of Temescal Canyon was the port, before it moved to San Pedro Bay at the bottom of the Figueroa Street "shoestring", but there was more than one port it seems. Too many storms in rainy years made ports untenable on Santa Monica Bay. Perhaps the adaptive reuse of Hollywood Park, a GOOD idea for a change, will restore the fortunes of Inglewood, which was an attractive city before the 60s and the rise of LAX, as I recall it.
