Message: All this talk about Arkansas brought back some pleasant memories from the late 90's when I was working in Arkadelphia - midway between Little Rock and Texarkana. Job shop rate was great along with getting PD. Gas was cheap and so was the rent! Nice friendly people....once you could understand their speech. And Sunday morning breakfast at the Waffle House or lunch at Hardees for a quick burger. Some other memories that I can recall: hot and very humid summers; plenty of rain; lots of bugs; tornado watches and warnings with an occasional touch down; cold winters with ice storms; I did have to drive to Hot Springs to find a beer or bottle of wine as Arkadelphia in Clark County was a dry county, as Mary Ann noted; a controversial president who was born in Hope and grew up in Hot Springs and had many enemies who seemed to disappear at the drop of a hat. Wait a minute...did I say pleasant memories?? More like shivers down my spine! All kidding aside, I did meet for the first time my lovely bride, Judy Wudy, while working there. Guess living and working back there was for a reason. Here we are fourteen years later and still going strong. Yes, lots of pleasant memories!

Message: Marsha, I'd forgotten y'all were from Arkansas. There'll be an initiative on the November ballot to make the entire state WET. Meaning you can buy liquor anywhere and have public bars, etc. Right now, it's county-by-county, but the loophole's private clubs ... and you're only allowed a case and a fifth in one trip to buy it in a wet county. Counties make lots of money on roadblocks that way. No offense, but if it does pass, I think The Rowdies should make a trip to Hot Springs during racing season and I'll join you. You can rent nice condos on the lake at Hot Springs ... just bring your clothes, beverages and food. You, too, JB!

Message: I guess Arkansas depends on your people down there. We swam at the " blue hole" a lake with the most amazing water you ever saw. Fun was blowing up ripe peaches with "cherry bombs" available down there. Most fun was sitting in the screened in porch with watermelon and watch the lightning storms move in. Arkansas, where all the Bickers can still be found. Above and below ground.

I would love to see and catch up with her, I am sure she has some good life stories. Mary Ann, Your visits to Arkansas as a child sound like mine. I would NOT drink the milk my grandmother brought in from the cows. I would refuse "cow milk" and only drink the "regular kind". I wouldn't give anything for my memories of summers in Arkansas.

Message: A huge thank you to Leo Ainsworth for finding my long lost friend Sherry Barton, HHS '64! Just got off the phone with her after 50 years and had a loooong conversation. In talking and laughing with her I realize how some things never change, including basic personalities. She still is as funny as ever! We talked about her upcoming reunion and she is thinking about going down, if so, I'm there too! She hasn't been able to get onto Cougartown for some reason, but she is going to try again. THANK YOU Leo, you're the best! Janet

Message: When my family spent summers in Arkansas, Grandma did milk the cow. I could only drink it over ice cubes. A cousin saw Grandma doing the morning chore once and never drank milk again! Grandma also churned and made her own delicious butter and sometimes sold it. She made her own buttermilk, too. Grandpa had cattle and peach orchards. Packing peaches in the heat and humidity for 50 cents an hour was quite an experience, but the Elbertas were so good! Garden grown veggies were canned as well. Digging up potatoes was awful. Sometimes Grandpa would chill watermelons in a creek for a surprise and we'd all sit under the shade trees in the early evenings and enjoy the treat. Of course the boy cousins had to have their seed spitting contests. Good memories ...

Message: I'm with you, Noreen, I wouldn't have had the milk compartment removed either. As for the free Good Humor ice cream, I don't recall, but I do remember getting the free Charms suckers at Al's Market on 120th. For Gordon's birthday party I bought some of the little wax bottles with juice in them... Two of our grandchildren (10 & 13) were very fascinated with them when they visited yesterday. The youngest pulled out the silly putty and asked what it is supposed to do. Her 20 year old sister was irritated when answering that it does nothing, you do it, use you're mind!!!

Message: When I was a brand new little boy my father was an ice man and had a route in the Wilshire district. He had several movie theaters on his route and it was before they air conditioned them. All the 50 pound blocks of ice had to be taken up to the roof tops and put in special little houses to cool the air as it passed through. ~~~ If the ice block houses ever come back into favor I still have his ice tongs and can still remember all the scars on his shoulder from carrying those blocks.

Message: I realize I'm a little late with this, but does anyone remember the door-to-door vacuum cleaner salesmen? You could use the vacuum before buying so you knew what you were getting. And Robin, loved the Good Humor man and of course I remember the 'ice man' and the 'ice box'. Our ice man came into our home as if he lived there, with that huge cube of ice hooked into those ice tongs, and all of it slung over his shoulder as if it were nothing special . As a child, it was almost like seeing Superman! Wonder how much those huge cubes of ice weighed! And Janet, my Mother had Tupperware parties does Tupperware even exist today? I STILL have some Tupperware! And Judy Wudy not only do I remember the pots and pans salesman, I bought a whole set and got a beautiful set of China AND silverware! They all went into my hope chest and I paid for them on the installment plan. I still use them all today items such as these must have been of a better quality in those days. Did I say must have been without a doubt, things were of better quality in those days!
