Message: Trying to arrange for a mini-family-friends reunion soon and wondered if anyone knows of a place that is for rent by the night, maybe in the Whittier area? We are coming from several places and this may be a way to cut down on costs. I found a great place, but it was taken for all the nights we may be availalbe. We want to see Disneyland among other things. Ideas?

Message: Long while since checking in...things are as smooth as ever John! Three topics caught my interest. 1.Bob's Big Boy - went there after basketball games. Debbie Colburn, Nancy Hart and I kept stats for the team. They used to serve milkshakes in the stainless steel (or metal at least) mixing cups, so delicious. 2.Beatles - I was at my grandparents house in Culver City for that great event. Every Sunday night we were there for dinner and Ed Sullivan. Paul is still my favorite. 3. Basque heritage - John P and Janet B mentioned Basque food/restaurants. I grew up with some of the finest Basque cooking around. My grandmother was from Urepel, France, a small town in the Pyrenees. She was Basque and could make the most basic of food delicious. Nice trip down memory lane.
Hi Bonnie, thanks for the comments and welcome back.

Message: I've been busy all day and just got on the computer. The first thing I spotted is that Fats Domino celebrated his 86th birthday today. Now how did he get to be 86, when I'm still 18. Talk about history! When I hear the opening notes of "Blue Berry Hill", it hurls me right back to the Gunga Den, Senior Square and all that stuff. Happy Birthday Fats!
Amen to that, I think I found my thrill there.

Message: I remember going to Bob's Big Boy with 5-6 of my buddies after a football game, one of the guys, I can't remember who ordered apple pie. The waitress asked if he wanted it ala mode. He looked at her with a blank look on his face, not knowing what she was talking about. The waitress said, "you know, ice cream". It still didn't register with my friend, and he simply told the waitress, "I don't know what you're talking about but just give me some apple pie with some of that ala mode stuff on the side".

The Big Boy on about PCH and Hawthorne closed about a year ago and re-opened as the Black Bear Diner.

Message: Re: Bob's Big Boy, I was surprised when I moved to Ohio that they are everywhere around here, except that they are called Frisch's Big Boy. The fat-boy statue is exactly the same. My memory about eating at Bob's after the football games during my senior year was that I couldn't relax and totally enjoy myself with "the gang" because I was nervous about getting home and writing up the game story for the Daily News. I felt I should have been "doing my job", but I didn't want to miss the after-game fun. I'd be up all hours of the night writing because I was so slow at it.

Message: Thirty-three days until retirement but who's counting. Time to get down to serious reunion planning. I asked two classmates to be the keepers of the funds, both declined. Any serious objections to letting me do the banking? On the topic of Bob's Big Boy, if I can trust Wikipedia, the Burbank store might have been the first. I was there a couple of years ago and it was their version of the weekly "Cruise Night." The street (alley) behind the restaurant was blocked off and parked up with vintage cars. The food was good but not what I remember from my youth. A couple of Sundays a month growing up, Dad would take the tribe (he went for himself but allowed us to go along) to the L. A. County Museum. After hours of 'running around the museum,' he'd pack us up and head for Bob's. I know the old synapses aren't firing at the same speed these days, but I guarantee corporate bob isn't the same as food of our youth. Oh, and a thank you to the L. A. County and the Science Museum that played a big part in who I am today, and for getting me through to retirement.
Lots of Cruising going on at Bob's in Burbank. Check out their website.

Message: The Bob's Big Boy in Barstow is not an authentic Bob's any longer. It's a knockoff. Relish on burgers is Not the same. I asked, and they said they are now just Big Boy. I'll never go back. No reason to even stop in Barstow anymore. Wonder if I could even remember how to get to Burbank?
Betty, Harbor Fwy to the Golden St Fwy is how I would go.

Message: Jim...Bob's Big Boy on Friday nights..Good Topic! Those were always fun times. One draw was the Big Boy Combo featuring the double-decker burger, cheese, fries, and the small salad with thousand island dressing. I always loved the taste of Bob's special seasoning salt. Still have some I found at a Bob's facimile on a trip back east.
You can still get Bob Big Boys, Burbank location.

Message: HEY! Long-time, no-post. Thanks very much for the BD wishes. Don't know how Sue remembers that my favorite is strawberry shortcake! First kiss ... now hang onto your hats, but I SWEAR this is the truth ... was when I was 16-1/2 years old and was delivered by Lynn Knauss from Leuzinger. He was later my husband ... much later. And we went together longer than we were married! haha He remained a dear friend till he died a few years ago. And did you hear? 1957 is having some kind of a get together in June. Buddy Youngreen, bless his heart, is at the helm again and we thank him profusely! I guess Buddy figured he'd better plan a 57th instead of waiting for a 60th reunion, before we all kick the bucket! haha Actually, it has something to do with Buddy's dyslexia ... he said the majority of the class is turning 75 this year so it seemed like the time to have a 57th reunion.
Hi Doris, yes the class of 57 is doing a "Class of 57 turns 75" Reunion. How fun, and all the details are on our Reunions page. Hope you can make it out for that one and thanks for FINALLY checking in

Message: Question ? .... Why did we always meet at Bob's Big Boy in Inglewood after football games on Friday nights ? Just been wondering about this for a long time. LOL We had Norms and Pete's in Hawthorne etc,. And I'm not sure if you older classmates went anywhere after games. I'm thinking ya all went to Fosters or ?
We went to the after game dances at the Gunga Din and later at Eucalyptus Park.

Message: Boy, have you ever called yourself from an outside line to see if your real phone is working?? I was getting ready to post a mercy post just to see if you were still alive JB. I do have an announcement as there's a Valentine's Day dinner (fund raiser) at the Haw VFW this Sunday. Lots of food and fun and what else do you have to do, and church does not count! Don't run for your antidepressant yet, I was joking. BTW-you don't need to make a reservation, you can buy the tickets at the door when you arrive. Live band and a nice cool bar with Margaritas & beer flowing all day. The first drink is on me, the next ten you'll have to buy yourself. And no, you can't order triple Pedrone for the first drink and beer thereafter. JDB
Sound fun to me.

Message: John, I got tired of coming on here and finding nothing posted. I thought maybe you took off again, but just in case you didn't, I'm gonna put down my weekend plans. Saturday, I'm going to the Cerritos High School alumni baseball game, along with Bill Shultz, and watch my son and some guys that I coached there play, and on Sunday I'm going to the monthly record meet. May not buy any records but will have coffee with Bob Fraser and John Guerra, both from HHS class of '60. There I added something and even made it HHS related. Anyone else doing anything this weekend?
Hi John, I too thought this thing was broken. Have a fun weekend Cougs.
