Message: Any Olympic year brings back memories of 1984 in LA when the City of Hawthorne honored my dad, Reese Walton, as a torch bearer. He ran his 3k on Hawthorne Boulevard on Opening Day as the torch made its way to the Coliseum. My grand daughter and I recently watched the city's cable video and I shed a few tears when Dad talked about the Spirit of Hawthorne and being a 35 year resident. I saw so many people that I knew, too. Approximately 30,000 people were on the Boulevard cheering and it was a great day for all!

Message: Great News in the Daily Breeze: Hawthorne High School opened the doors to their new Media Center, one of several new buildings on campus being completed thanks to Bond Measure CV. The 14,000 square foot building will allow students to study after school with the help of new computers and software. Hawthorne High School on Monday unveiled its brand-new media center, today's lingo for library, showcasing the latest milestone of that campus' first major rebuild since the 1950s. Featuring an enclosed classroom, a career center, a state-of-the-art computer lab and a lounge with study stations furnished with iPads, the school's new media center is designed to be a hub of learning for students from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. every weekday. One thing the 21st century library doesn't have is any books.

Message: I was perusing the Medford (Oregon) Mail Tribune this evening -- I always check the obituaries (not morbid, just curious) and ran across a familiar name. Robert Allen Knudsen. HHS class of 1962. I knew Bob was in this area, bumped into him a time or two. The paper said he had a "long illness." I remember him as a larger than life, pool player, and a fixture at Fosters in the 60's. He moved here in 1976. R.I.P. "Big Bob"

Message: One of my high school best friends was two time Olympian Tom Hintnaus (Aviation'76) Tom won the men's pole vault Olympic trial in '80 but we boycotted Moscow. In '84 the Olympic committee contacted Tom to see if he wanted to use the training facility IN Colorado springs. Tom told them he had good news and bad news. The good news was that he would see them at the Olympics, the bad news was that he was born in Brazil and had dual citizenship and he was angry they had screwed him in '80 so there I was in'84 at the Los Angeles coliseum watching Tom,( Aviation high/University of Oregon), jumping for Brazil. Tom did not medal but he got revenge the following year by beating everyone at the world championships in Zurich in '85!

Message: Regarding the Beatles, In the early 1990's I was in Beverly Hills promoting my (at the time) radio show on Kaleidascope Radio Magazine in Hollywood and looking for commercial sponsors. While in an Artsy shop with paintings and such I was looking intently at a work being described by the shop owner and standing within two feet of me on my left was Ringo Starr! He was there with his wife and daughter. JIM SCHROEDER ask if any Cougar was in an Olympic event....well, slidin' & glidin' with this answer I can say yes, I was. During the 1984 Games held in Los Angeles I was a Greyhound bus driver and every morning I went to work I was one of the 'group' that was assigned one of the Olympic 'Runs.' To go pick up a group and take them to one or more of the venues. Often, the person in charge would have an extra ticket and I was able to go in and see the event as well. All of that plus attending the Closing Ceremonies kinda gave me "Olympic Fever." (Which was/is a good thing!)

Message: Jim Sloey was right. Mike Marsh won two golds in the 92 Barcelona Olympics, in the 200m and the 400m relay. In 96 he won silver in the 400m relay. And Jim's also correct that Henry Thomas was never an Olympian, as he served a 10-yr prison term (91 to 01 for robbery at a fast-food restaurant). At the 88 Olympic Trials he was 7th in the 200m.

Message: Had I kept going to HHS I would have graduated in that year. However, I have noticed in the "Where we lived" section a graduate from the 69 era named Ken Green. His address says 235 Oxford Ave, and he seemed to live there from 1955 until the early 70's. What peaks my interest is that he lived there maybe a house or two from where I lived, and lived there just after I left, in '55. In my searches of him I cannot seem to find an email address for him and wondered if anyone on here knows of his whereabouts, as I would like to email him and discuss if we might have known the same people. Can anyone help me out? TANKS!
