Message: Well, a bit confused. Jerry Miles sent me a overhead Google shot (not sure when taken) that showed the tree in the back. But the Ash trees are still there too! Oh, my dad loved and protected those trees. But the City of Hawthorne had to replace sidewalks every 10 years or so. Wonder if the huge crows nest is still in one of those trees? I am wondering too much Thanks, John for posting the pic.
You are welcome. Still looks like a nice property, Betty.

Message: Happy B-days to my roundball teammate of yestercentury John Nalbandian and the a former rockstar in the Pop Warner world, Danny Litton. John I guess no one wants to play favorite 5 tunes but you and I. Have you ever heard Chuck Berrys "sweet little rock and roller" by Dion? An outstanding cover of that hit...Congrats to the Bronco fans and how about those Seahawks! ....Betty's place looks like it knew Google was coming :)
Never heard Dion's version but pretty hard to beat Chuck's original. Both my teams won yesterday, now who to pull for? Happy Birthday Danny and John!!

Message: In the 10th grade ('60) after several absences that I wrote my own notes for I really was sick one day, so my grandmother wrote a note for me. I handed it to the lady at the office and she came back with a hand full of old notes and asked me who wrote those because the one I had just gave her had a different signature. I had no idea that they saved all those old notes. BTW, Mr. Wetzler was the man to stay clear of back then.
Never had the guts to write my own notes, Jim

Message: MEMORIES: Since Jan spilled the beans about Mr. Nelson I will share. Picture it, 1960 and I'm a Freshman fresh out of Catholic School and so I got lost on campus all the time. During our swimming requirement, I found I couldn't make it on time from the pool to the far end of campus for the next class. 3 strikes and you're out & so I was sent to my councelor for the proper punishment. Expecting to have a lesson from hell that only a nun could think up I learned that I was to be "suspended" for 3 days. (I figured suspended probably meant I would be suspended by a buring wire from the ceiling and given a good flogging after the wire broke) and when I asked what suspended meant, I was told that I could not go back to school for 3 days. WOW! I thought I died and went to heaven. I remember thinking that I was going to have a good ol' time in public school after all, and I did.
Yep, always real tough getting those days off Judy. Thanks for sharing.

Message: VP Dan Nelson. (No relation) For our Senior Prom, I was dating a girl from Mira Costa. Dan's son, Brad and I were good friends and he was dating my girl's best friend, so we decided to double date for the prom and planned to just avoid Mr. Nelson at the dance. It was expected that at least ONE member of a couple should go to the school hosting the prom. After dinner when we went to the prom locale (PV Country Club) and saw Mr. Nelson at the main entrance monitoring people coming and going. Oh s#!%, we thought as we were walking up, but it was too late to turn back. As we walked in, I just said "Good Evening, Mr. Nelson" in my best Eddie Haskel voice, and he said: "Hello Alan". Brad, behind me, also said "Good Evening, Mr. Nelson" and he answered: "Hello Brad", without batting an eye. Mr. Nelson never mentioned it, but I'm pretty sure he knew what was going on.
Never failed back then, did it Alan. Thanks for the story.

Message: OK...now let's get back to Hawthorne memories. Did anyone ever have to deal with Dan Nelson while in school? 'One' of my encounters with Dan was when I had forged my dad's signature on an absent excuse note...and Dan caught me. He confronted me with that note and then requested from me to have my dad write a letter indicating that dad was now aware of my forging his name. I panicked and did not know how to tell dad but then the brain kicked in to high gear and I came up with an idea that could work. The next morning as dad was heading out the door for work I told him that I had over-slept the previous morning and missed second period and needed a note from him. Dad was running late, I told him I would fill in the date and excuse and he could just sign his name to a blank paper! I then wrote the letter Dan requested, he accepted it and to this day I wonder why Dan never questioned why such an important document was in my handwriting. Just one of many run-ins with Dan during those 'exciting' years at Hawthorne High!
Great story there Janny and great time to get dad to sign his name to a blank form too Thanks man.

Message: Wow John, what happened to Sharon's nice personality? I agree, you do not deserve to be disrespected. I was going to try to jump in on the luncheon, but, don't think I want all the drama. I know this is an old high school site, but, high school is over isn't it? And Betty, no football is not over yet. 3 more weekends (Championships, Pro Bowl and SUPER BOWL). Then the Olympics begin on Feb 6...my favorite time of every 2 years (Summer or Winter - love them both). I'll be watching as much of them as I can (and my family will allow), sittin' with my GO USA mittens on. And cudos to whoever it was that mentioned class of 1966 are 66ers turning 66!
Hi Terri, Go USA for sure.

Message: OK....Let's see now...Betty I don't think Sloey has much to say about Nebraska football. And Captain Obvious from Stanford (that lost the Rose Bowl) is quiet as well. The OR. Ducks won two bowls in 2013 so we are happy campers :-). I saw the Eagles at the Pond in 2007 and can't believe they can still get it done...Amazing! JB... Do you think the Snake and the Mongoose waited too long to only get a $1M bid for all 4 rigs? Watched every minute and Hendricks would have bit had it been good business decision....l OK Cougs, name your favorite 5 (not 10) best songs of all time.." You've lost that loving feeling"..Medley/Hatfield is my #1....anyone else?... It is hard but tells a lot about different classes...Later skaters...:-)
All 4 rigs would take up a small parking lot and I'm thinking that's what kept some bidders away, but sure would make a bitchen Lions diarama My #1 would be.....well in the top 5 anyway "You Never Can Tell" by Chuck Berry (The Twist music in Pulp Fiction for those too young to remember it).

Message: While we have the Eagles on our minds I have a story I have to tell: Four years ago when I was driving across country to Wichita Kansas to take a year off from life I was on I-40 going through Arizona. I saw a sign that said next exit for Winslow Arizona. I decided it was time for lunch so I pulled off and had a burger at a Denny's. I chatted with the guy next to me at the counter. We were both leaving at the same time so I asked him to take a picture of me standing on the corner,. he asked" "Why?" I told him I was hoping to spot a good looking gal in a flat-bed Ford, He didn't get it, obviously not an Eagles fan!

Message: Betty, next time I'm in Hawthorne I'll peak over the fence. Just hope I don't get shot. lol Jim is my husband James E. Greene, Jr. He has a fabulous voice. No singing in these roles, except in the chorus. He plays the captain of the guard and the prisoner that is hauled away to the inquisition. He claims they are meaningless parts/small parts. However, I told him to quote somebody, "There are no small parts, just small actors." He has been doing community theater for years. We were married for 5 years and I had never heard him sing. One day he was doing the wash and I heard him from the other side of the house singing "Oh What a Beautiful Day." I thought it was someone singing on the radio. I got him professional voice lessons. He was a drummer, but found out he has perfect pitch. I created a monster. Now he does community theater all the time. Sometimes big parts, sometimes small parts. He loves it. I'm bring 3 older women next Saturday. Why don't you buy a ticket from Gold Star. I think that is what it is call. It's only 10 dollars for seniors on that site. It is 18 for seniors at the theater and 20 for everyone else. It is open seating, so you could sit with the old gals. lol There are only 4 more performances left. Next Fri. and Sat. with a double feature on Sat. then only one on the last Friday of the month in the evening. Anyone who wants to join us is very welcome to do so. Thank you John for letting me go on like this. Maybe next time Betty and e-mail me. What do you think of that Betty? P.S. John, I have had a good response from my post about MS. I'm surprised at the amount of people it affects. This forum helped me to contact others with the same condition. I cannot thank you enough.

Message: Sharon, who is Jim, and what does he do in Man of La Mancha? I love that play! It really has been quiet on C-town - we need to get Sloey and someone fighting about football or something! Wait, is football already over? Shows how much I know. I haven't been to Hawthorne in many years. Can someone please drive by our old house and see if my Evergreen Elm is still growing in the backyard? I got that tree for my first birthday, and the tree was one year old. That would make the tree nearly 64 years old now! Address is 12315 Sundale Avenue - down from Hal-Cap Field.

Message: Janet, I used to have a 1969 427 green Corvette. One just like it sold at Barrett/Jackson? Jackson/Barrett? in Arizona for $450,000. I only paid $4,500 for it new. What is the math on that John? My husband's uncle was the Service Manager at Harbor Chevrolet and had been for years. We got a great deal. It had been his company car for two or three months.
