The harmonies were excellent, and the group as a whole were just great. Mike, Brian, Al, Bruce and David....I salute you. Thanks so much for all the great music and memories over all these years. I'm heading out now to buy the new CD "Why God made the radio". Their new songs sound awesome! Merry Christmas to all!

Message: I just received yet another email from someone asking if I had the recipe for BBQ Pete's Cole Slaw. I get these requests at least twice a year and wonder why people think I would have it. Well in November, Janet Amuchastegui HHS68 posted a recipe on Facebook saying this is THE BBQ Pete Cole Slaw Recipe. Here are her words:
OK Hawthorne peeps! I tried a recipe that was supposedly the dressing on BBQ Pete's coleslaw, seriously, if you try it, double the amount as it is so good you will eat a heaping serving before sharing any of it! For one head of finely shredded cabbage I used 1/2 c. oil, 1/2 c vinegar, 2 tbls sugar and 1 tbls salt. Shake it in a jar and mix about 1/2 the shredded cabbage and add until you like the flavor. I am so excited! Over the last 35 yrs every time my family got together the topic of this slaw dressing was brought up! Now, oh my gosh we have it. It really is the little things in life that are so freaking kewl!!!!!
Please give it a try Cougs and see what you think. Thanks so much Janet for the help. I can now answer all those emails.

Message: Seasons Greetings to all. I am writing to inquire about Cougar sightings. I was invited to a Wounded Warriors Project event at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton Ohio. So of course I had to visit the Class of 1979 enshrinement with Dick Butkus, Johnny Unitas, Yale Lary and Cougar - Ron Mix. Very impressive. And I thought I would take the opportunity to remind folks of the troops who did serve and still are serving in the military and could use some holiday cheer. Do what you can to support them all.

And, I bounced down my icy back porch steps one morning this week - didn't have my glasses on. Nothing's broken, but have some painful bruises. Beautiful weather's my Christmas wish for each of you and hopes for a better year, too. Be merry!

Ron, that's a sad story. There is nothing like homemade banana bread. I still make my mom's recipe. However, nothing is ever as good as mom made. Luckily she taught me how to make it when I was 9 years old. I still don't have it written down. All by memory. With the way my memory is going, I think I'd better start writing down all those old favorites. Hawthorne moms were the best.

Last time we spoke you had a few choice words about the Tree being dead after SC cleaned our clock (something the Quackers cant seem to figure out) . When will you Oregonians learn to stop dissing the SU football team which has your number and also knows how to win the Pac 12 title the past few years. At lease SC showed some respect, but you and your bud DeAnthony Thomas, dont seem to have that. I hope you both enjoy the Alamo Bowl and I will think of you from the Rose Bowl for my second year in a row. Merry Lime and Yellow Xmas! Shane Skov and the Boys

Message: Unlike Sharon's mother, my mother was unaware of the delay in transit of items sent to sailors. When my ship, USS Camden AOE 2, was off the coast of Viet Nam, mail was fairly timely, what with aircraft carriers, helicopters and such. Not so for transit across the ocean; it took about 3 weeks to get from Long Beach to the Tonkin Gulf. My mother sent me a loaf of her banana bread, which she knew I loved. When the package came, I was fairly sure of what it was, so I eagerly opened it. I tore off the aluminum foil, almost tasting the banana bread as I did. Alas. It was green and hairy.

Message: May have told this story before. At the beginning of WWII my dad was a submariner. My mother sent him a fruitcake for Christmas. They didn't get regular mail calls during the war, so she wanted to send him something that would last till he got it. Well it never got to him until around two years later. When he finally got it, he said it was like a gift from heaven. He shared it with all his shipmates and they loved it. I guess when you don't get regular goodies whenever you want them, fruitcake tastes good. Are we all spoiled or what?

Message: Wudy is correct. One fruitcake, regifted for 100's of years. On the other hand Sharon picked the best ever. I have had a slice of Corsicana's best and it is superior to the other bricks people receive. The only problem is the obvious. Too many slices and your bath tub will show stretch marks
And Tom, my clapper has provided many years of good service. Rumor is the lastest model is also an I-phone, so I am weighing my options. Merry "mission pack" Christmas Cougs!

Message: Tom and anyone looking for fruitcake can try Collin Street Bakery from Corsicana, TX. They have a website (www.collinstreetbakery.com). They also have the greatest pecan cake and old timey ice box cookies. There was a comedian who did a routine about there being only one fruitcake in the world and people just kept regifting it. My family thought this was funny so we started adding small fruitcake slices to the Christmas dessert platter.

Message: Say the magic word, say MISSION PACK, and it's on it's merry way. No gift so right so gay so bright, it's the MISSION PACK magic way. There was a removable store on Imperial and Crenshaw next to Mel's sporting goods in the mid to late 60's. Fruit, citron...candy fruit, figs...nuts..and shiny bows and wrapping. Funny, I hated all that stuff back then, but I eat all now and a few prunes to keep the senior digestive tract humming. I'm baking cookies this Christmas Sidney..I'll be in your neighborhood this week. I'm going to surprise you.
