Message: Interesting article on the Beach Boys. My lifelong friends Lois & Louis(Louie Jr) Marotta lived just around the corner from the Wilsons. They had an old uprite piano & Brain used to come over & bang on it often. When he would leave Louie Sr. would comment that kid will never amount to anything! Lois a couple years older would drive her Dads 56 Chevy wagon, loaded up with surf boards & take Dennis, Carl, & David down to the beach & surf. She was for sure one of the first girls to surf. Louie Jr. was close friends with Dennis & Carl & they took him with them when they toured in the early days. I had got into Go Kart racing in the early 60's & Jr. called me up one day & said Carl was thinking of buying a Kart & could they go out with me next time. I picked them up one afternoon & we headed to Monza kart track out behind Ascot Raceway. It was a dual Mac 6 engine McCulloch kart & Carl thought it really fun. Louie Jr. who we lost early 90's told me of going to recording sessions & Brian always knew exactly what he wanted to hear on the record & would over ride anything the producer had in mind. A true musical genius. Lots of Beach Boys Stories from HHS for sure.

Message: Regarding Middle League Coaches. I played on the 1970 and 1971 Yankees. Manager was Bob Durnan. Coaches were Ron Treat and Pat Mack with Rick Carden helping out. We won the league title in 1971, then lost to Hawthorne American in the City Series. The same staff coached the Phillies in 1969 (Middle League minors). Learned a lot of baseball from those guys, then coached a number of teams myself over the years.

Message: Speaking of buses, last weekend when "our" friend the Cougar stalker came to Solvang-boy do I have stories including finding him walking up and down the stairs yelling "we're from Hawthorne, etc., at 3 Am and yes he had on the 70's cheerleader uniform, but I digress. At 11:30 am Saturday he shows up with this scarlet and gold bus with 45 people whose names have been mentioned here as a sighting. The bus was straight out of Hoosiers, the greatest sports movie of all time. Fortunately the group could not stay and none could produce any ID's to substantiate that they were who they said they were, and stalker sent them off with the driver-I suspect to the one of the many vineyards minutes away. So if that is the bus of which you speak, I may wait for the cab.

Message: Middle League was a gap filler between little kids playing Little League and almost grown men playing Pony League. When the National League was formed they built the teams around brothers. The Redmen had the Adams brothers and Bickers brothers. The Braves had Dennis and Royal Lord. My memories were watching Joe Moeller pitch both games of a double header. I saw my brother Bob hit a home run off Joe Moeller in an all-star game. But by far my most lasting memory was those hot, itchy wool uniforms in the middle of summer.

Message: I attended the gathering last night at Tony's at 119th and Aviation for the classes of '70-'73. It was a good group with about 65 Cougars at the peak. I went with my brother Ray'71 and got to see some of his friends I don't see very often. The classes of 70 & 71 were well represented and I think I was the youngest there being from '76. The highlight of my night was getting to chat with four of the campus goddesses from my era, Kim Stembler(hot blonde), Sally Upegui(hot cheerleader), Anna Nicocia(victory queen) and Teri Dowell(varsity cheerleader). A pleasant night had by all!

Message: My husband Max says the Redmen were sponsored by "the Benevolent order of Redmen". Can't really contribute more than that quick response from him, but it may trigger a memory for someone who knows more than we do. On another note, my family has owned property in Hawthorne for about 80 years near the bottom of the water tower on Truro Ave. My mom's Visa card from Bank of America says "customer since 1932". My dad had one of those school savings accounts that he contributed to when a student at St. Joseph's. When Mom and Dad married in 1947, her name was added and she has the account today. At some point 1964-68, my dad attended the City Council meeting to speak against the installation of a camera on the top of the water tower, a proposal that was defeated at that time. One of the reasons given for the installation was to help with flood control in an emergency. My dad, all 5'3" of him, told them he had been able to walk through any flooding that had occurred since 1932. John, Max and I read CT nearly every day. Thank you for all your hard work.

Message: I played my first year for McCullough Motors & I can't remember having a name other than that. David Dennee obviously played for the Cardinals. I can only remember 5 of the teams listed in 1953, Dennee's, McCullough, 7UP, Paramount Sands & the Optimist. This memory hiccup really has nothing to do with my age. With the brain trust on this site I know we will get to the bottom of this!!
