Message: Just one more thing my fellow Cougars, in our day, we were expected to be accountable for our actions and behavior......that is why when we got in trouble at school we got our ass kicked.....Our parents didn't care what the teacher did or said to use.....if we were disrespectful... we got in trouble...these days kids are taught to be accountable, and slowly but surely..... no one thinks they should be accountable for their decisions and actions...Your health is YOUR responsibility....you have choices and can do as you please but don't expect someone else to pay for it..... The Boomers are falling apart....the 60's were fun, most of us experimented and moved on, others did not.....we had a War that damaged so many of our young men and no one helped them... Now that is where the government should step up to the plate and give our Veterans any and all help they need FREE....we owe them.... and they are our heroes...for them, I pay...gladly

Message: Boy, it's been a long time but felt I would make a couple of comments about healthcare... left, right...they all look the same, cut from the same cloth...wouldn't give a nickel for any of them. Remember you can love your country, and I do...without loving your government...they are two very different things (Georgie didn't think so, but then again..) I have been a nurse and in all aspects of healthcare for the past 23 years and it's time that everyone take responsibility for their healthcare...that means PAY FOR YOUR OWN HEALTH INSURANCE... I am sure many Californians agree we are tired of paying for those who abuse their bodies, don't take care of their health and then want everyone else to pay for it.... I don't care if you pay $200/mo or $200 a year, pay something, especially if you want to continue to smoke, drink, eat crap day after day, sit on your ass and then complain that you don't get good care. Many times people don't have a choice about their health---diseases happen BUT as a nurse I can tell nearly all disease is because of DIS-EASE.....in other words you blew it. So get healthy folks because the system sucks now, poor access, not enough Doctors, greed and bottom line concerns greater than patient concerns...u think Universal Medicine would be bad.... people we already have government sponsered healthcare, it's called Medicare and Medicaid...get government out of healthcare and u might stand a chance......otherwise I suggest you eat right, give up the smokes, drink only moderately and exercise or you will be sadly disappointed in the end result. Thanks for listening......

Message: Its been a long while since i posted anything and it seems i missed some very heavy words. First id like to say this ct is run by John and he has the right to say what he likes and he has always been fair in my view. I am a middle of the road kind of guy i try to live the words i speak and my faith. As for health care i believe we should have it. if we can spend billions on war how about taking care of the people in your country and the people that elected. i am just tired of all the anger i see these days. Lets get back to respecting each other and take care of our own for a change. sorry john just had to put my 2 cents in you run a great site.

Message: Robin mentions his uncle Douglas Hood, a fifth grade teacher at Anza. I was in his class. There was not a fifth grade girl that was not in love with him. A handsome man with slight curl in his hair, ivy league hair cut that wore tortoise frame glasses. A couple things that really stand out. One was his favorite saying when teaching something, "the answer is rather obvious". The other thing was when playing dodge ball and he was among the group throwing the ball, you didn't have a chance. He would be looking at someone else when he would throw the ball and hit the unexpected victim, which was always a boy.

Message: I just wanted to say thanks John for contributing to the creation and existance of the Hawthorne Historical Society so that our cities' past history is documented for everyone to see. I have so many fond memories of growing up in this city in the 60's and 70's. It seems like all the good things are long gone now, like the parade and fair, and the cool architecture one would experience cruising down Hawthorne Blvd, like the Plaza, the drive-ins like A&W, Biggies and the Lighthouse and other points of interest too numerous to mention. Change is a given in any city, but change is sad when it takes away from what once was. Case in point is the city just to the west of us, El Segundo. Their city has changed in the last 40 years but the High School still looks the same as well as the vibe you get when driving down Main street. Things don't have to deteriorate, the people in charge (Mayors, Councilmen, City Planners,) allow it to happen. I still get the same warm comfortable feeling when i drive through El Segundo, as I did when i was a kid, I wish i could say the same for how I feel when I drive through Hawthorne now, but at least we have documentation in pictures and other memoribilia in this museum that you are a part of, that houses these wonderful memories we all have from our youth.

Message: On August 20, 1948, while my Mom was shopping in the market on Imperial and Anza (La Cienega to you kids out there) her water broke. Shortly after, I was born in Oakwood's Stork's Nest Hospital at 426 E. 99th Street, Inglewood California. It catered to new mothers at the time but many years later unfortunately evolved into an abortion hospital that was accused of malpractice, many patient deaths and was finally closed down. It is still there as an Adult Therapeutic Center.

Message: Given that some of you seem to be interested in just about anything Hawthorne, I thought I might share a few thoughts about my recent farewell trip to the ol' hometown. I can't say I'll never be back but that's the long and short of it. Since this format is so severely limited I'll try to keep it short. I took a trip to some of the old familiar stomping grounds. Holly Glen, Wiseburn, HHS, Old City Hall, Hawthorne Blvd. Stopped by the historical society museum in the former council chambers there and had a opportunity to reminisce with some long time residents. Mike Huhn's parents, Norb, Don M. and a few others. Reminded me there are some really good people there. Nothing like seeing so many memories in a museum to make you feel your age. That was a bit strange. Anyway, with my Mom now moving out, I had so many memories run through my head I couldn't begin to describe them here. I shared some of those with my family upon my return. Interesting to see how that all translated. I wouldn't be appropriate discuss those here, except my take away is that it's all about the people now. The physicality, the place, the environment, the character, the culture. It's so foreign to me now. I'm sure there are some that feel differently, but that's to be expected. Anyway, for better or worse, I can honestly say I did leave feeling differently about the place than when I arrived. Let's just say that's for the better.

Message: Big Johnny B: Just some great big kudos to you for creating and handling Cougartown! As a direct result of this site I have become good friends with Jim Sloey. Jim invited me up to his place in Solvang for the weekend to enjoy the annual Danish Days celebration. Just got home from a great weekend with Jim and his wife Debbie. We ate, drank, enjoyed Danish Days and even got in some mutual Cougar Stalking in downtown Solvang. No luck but I did find a USC Trojan. The closest I came was a 67 Morningside grad. Jim even got some guy to tell me he was a Cougar just to keep me happy. A great time with friends found directly through Cougartown. Thanks John! A person can never have too many friends, especially when they are Cougars!

Message: Haven't been on CT for a while and was expecting to see the usual Monday morning quarterbacking about all the football games played this weekend. Instead I see the tail end of a little storm that happened a week or so ago. John, I've never met you and only know you through CT, but just want to express a sincere THANK YOU for creating this site and for running it all these years. It's OK to rattle the cage and shake things up every so often. Heck, you're the CT man and have been the glue that's kept a lot of us connected to our Hawthorne roots. Stay Cougar Strong! P.S. - My UCLA Bruins are 3-0 and looking good. Big game against Stanford on 10/19. Any Cougars going to that game in Palo Alto?
