Message: I guess everybody but me goes to Facebook as their number 1 social site. I have never signed up on Facebook and I never will. That goes for all of those other sites as well-- Twitter, MySpace, etc. The information you give to all of those entities is bought and sold to anybody who wants it, despite assurances that it won't be. And when I am asked at OSH if I want to become a member and receive "discounts"' I always reply, "No. Too many people already have too much information about me." I may be wrong about all of this, but I prefer to err on the side of safety. John, you have done an excellent job of keeping CT info private. That is greatly appreciated by me, and by, I hope, hundreds of others. I have never received unsolicited advances that I expect had anything to do with Cougartown. This is my one and only social site. Am I a dinosaur? Oh, well.
Hi Ron, I appreciate the loyalty to Cougartown. Sometimes I sound like I'm eating worms, talking about our Cougars using other social sites but I want everyone to know I understand it's what everyone is doing nowadays. Cougartown was one of the first REAL Alumni sites on the Internet. I'm not counting AlumniArchive, Classmates, etc, which are "for profit" sites and really don't give a rip about their alumni as long as the numbers are there. We want Cougars here, with a sprinkling of Olympians, Cardinals, Sentinels, Monarchs, etc. That's where we came from and who we are. If you want to find out who has a headache or a hang nail, or why Obama and Bush are idiots because someone copied a page from thedailykos, moveon, drudge, or chicksontheright, go to Facebook. The Cougar/Hawthorne News is here and I thank you all for participating in our little corner on El Segundo and Inglewood Ave.

1974 Cougars are still here but it seems facebook is now most everyone's social outlet.

Message: Had a nice meeting with principal Mark Newell this afternoon. I expressed my concern over HHSs failure to field a track team for the past ten years. Certainly we don't expect HHS to have a state championship team but I certainly expect HHS to have a team and one that is competitive in the South Bay. Mark assured me that there are co-head coaches for track, James Swain (recently removed as head football coach) and a woman with whom I am not familiar. I pointed out that HHS has not had a cross country team in years and track cannot exist without cross country preceeding it. Mark was pleased to tell me that a cross country team will be competing this fall. I keep my hopes up and we will see what happens next year! Mark is now on board with the refurbishing of the Halcap sign and asked for help with a newly forming HHS Booster club. I assured him that there are a number of Alumni who likely will get involved with the new booster club. It was a productive meeting and Mark is doing a great job! He also said that the new administration building will be ready in the fall. Big John: It took me 45 minutes to find a "non-student" Cougar on campus. Your disqualification of my Mothers Day sighting by comparing it to a sighting on the HHS campus was not legit! I challenge you or anyone else to find a "non-student" Cougar on campus! Apparently sighting a Cougar in a groery store in So. Cal doesn't count because I know Cougars live in So. Cal and have to eat so grocery stores are cheating?!!! Enough rambling.
You don't need any help finding Cougars, Clark. Thanks for the update from Mark too. It's probably time to update the Halcap sign but we at Hawthorne Historical would love to see the old one hanging in the museum.

Message: So many of us Cougars were affected by the HHS Drama Department (and Danny Fix, in particular). He was a wild and funny man, but very thoughtful and gave so much to each of us. It is interesting to see that many of us are involved in theater or related fields to this day, at least as a hobby. I didn't count myself smong those (except getting to see Broadway shows, LOL), until recently. Now I am involved in putting on a revue show (called Senior Stars). I just rehearsed an "Edith Bunker" number, which is reminiscent of the Momma part I played in BBB at HHS (only much nicer). Thanks again, Mr. Fix. It would be great fun to see if we could do a reunion of Drama Dept. people.
Thanks Pat, glad you're back at it.

Message: Courtesy of Rob Long and his "Martini Shot" feature on KCRW, I just learned of another Hawthorne show-business success story: Cynthia P. Stafford. A former resident of Freeman Avenue, near Kornblum, she invested her lottery winnings in both philanthropy and movie production, making three features so far. It might have been a ticket from The Bluebird....

Message: Playing the song game inspired me to surf the site and I just finished reading the History of Hawthorne. Very interesting. On page 19, it talked about the reconstruction of Hawthorne Blvd and the Hawthorne flood control system. My Grandfather Harrison Hitchcock was a foreman on one of the shifts in that reconstruction. My Dad told me about visiting him on the site when my Grandad was operating some of the heavy equipment building the islands on Hawthorne Blvd. It was fun to read about how that all came about and to know that he was a part of it. I also got a big kick out of Hawthorne calling itself the city of "Good Neighbors" and how the city council had awarded the "Good Neighbor" award to many citizens. Having been a State Farm "Good Neighbor" Agent for 33 years, I like the ring of that.....
The City of Hawthorne had a slogan contest back in the early 60s to see who could come up with the best slogan. I believe Linda McVeigh class of 63 came up with the winning slogan, "City Of Good Neighbors".

Message: My new book "THE SPIRIT GUIDE BAR," an autobiographical novel that involves the Hawthorne of the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s, released a couple of weeks ago. Wendy Frey Zeller (class of '79) was in attendance at my book signing in Chandler, Arizona last week. We haven't seen each other since the 70s. Turns out Wendy and I came out to Arizona a couple of decades ago. After 21 years as Phoenix police officer, she became a teacher. Turns out that Wendy and I teach high school in the same district, at different schools. My daughter attends Wendy's school. Crazy, huh? The book is available at Amazon.com and I'll be at THE BOOK FROG in Rolling Hills, Saturday, June 8th, at 3:00 for a book signing event. There should be plenty of Cougars on hand. Hawthorne rules!
Hi Bill and congratulations on the new book. I read the 8 fingered criminal's son and loved it. Will be picking up your new book too and thanks for letting us know.

Message: I think I hear the songs Sundown, by Gordon Lightfoot, and 25 or 6 to 4, by Chicago. Also, I am enjoying seeing the reruns of the series "Rawhide" on Saturday mornings. I may just have to break out my old cowboy outfit and 6 guns like I did when I watched the show in the early 60's. I think all the kids on the block were watching it. And in case the ladies don't know, a very young and handsome Clint Eastwood co-starred on the show as "Rowdy Yates".
Thanks Michael you gott'em bud. I am going to have to make these tougher.
