Message: Re: Boysenberry jam. Just bought some at Ralph's yesterday. (Knott's seedless) so it's still around in simple markets. But before I sign out-remember that there's a CINCO DE MAYO celebration with food at the Hawthorne VFW on May 5 (a Sunday) and tickets are on sale in the bar now. Rubin and Shirley Vanegas are cooking up a storm. Carnitas, taquitos, rice, beans, chips, dip and Margaritas galore. No reason to stay home when you can be having all that good food and drink. And yes, I will be your friendly (ruffled red blouse off the shoulder dancing on the table) burrito server again. Tickets should be bought by April 28. Call the canteen (bar) for more info (310) 679-7472. Ask for Susie.

Message: The earlier discussion on boysenberries reminded me of the bumbleberry. I never heard of bumbleberries until we took a vacation to Zion National Park, Utah. Outside of Zion is the town of Springdale that is home to the Bumbleberry Inn (anyone else besides me ever been there?). What's a bumbleberry? According to the Bumbleberry Inn, "bumbleberries are burple and binkel berries that grow on giggle bushes, so named because they giggle when the berries ripen and the bush begins to quake, and at the precise moment that they ripen, they giggle. If you were to eat a berry while it was giggling, you would spend the rest of your life giggling!" The waitresses at the Inn's restaurant used to (maybe they still do) recite this. The URL to the Bumbleberry Inn is http://www.bumbleberry.com/.

Message: Bravo to my intrepid classmate-since-kindergarten Clark for taking on the challenge of either locating the original HalCap sign, or making a new one to replace it. Clark always steps up to bat when there's a wrong that needs righting, and I'm glad he's on the case! Carl Rilling, I haven't been to Vidalia, GA yet, but I have eaten a lot of Vidalia onions. If you want to come to Georgia to see the harvest you are most welcome to stay with us. Maybe we'll go with you- we love a good adventure! Janny, Mike and I need to join the VFW/sons of and auxiliary, so that we can access the "V" in Meadview when we are there. Can we join Hawthorne's VFW? Both our dads were war vets- WWII and Korea.
You can join the Hawthorne Historical Society too. Go here for the details.

Message: The classes of 1969, 1970 & 1971 may remember THE HERD.... The Herd Again Reunion Concert Details:
A BLAST FROM THE PAST! Back in "the good ol' days" of 1966, centered in the towns of Lawndale and Hawthorne, California, a local South Bay band began to form and soon became known as "The Herd". They developed a reputation for precision musicianship, lead vocals by all band members, and background... We'd love to see all of our ole HHS buddies that used to come see us play and support us at this very special reunion concert! We'll be paying great music from the 60's & 70's. Along with great food too! At the new Lawndale Performing Arts & Community Center. For more details and ticket info. Hope to see you there! Cheers! Ted Jolly HHS Class of 1969
Hi Ted, Good Luck with the Concert. I'm sure many of our Cougars will want to see this one and thanks for letting us know.

Message: I'm operating under somewhat of a handicap -- as my computer has no speakers. Sorta the Betamax of it's day. It does have a heater, white sidewall tires and Mercomatic, but no speakers. But I will venture a guess. Knowing the way John works -- #07 must be the "Theme from James Bond" by Link Wray and the Wraymen. Or it could be theme from "The High And The Mighty" whistled by John Wayne. Or "Cherry Pie" by Skip and Flip. As George Fenneman might say, "Thanks for playing."
Thanks Jim, You gave away the next set of songs. What a great name for a 50s Doo Wop group, "The Mercomatics". Or how about the Dyna-Flows.
