Message: For Dennis Carden -- I'm so sorry to hear of your brother Pat's passing, my warmest condolences to you and your family. For Jim Sloey -- I loved your 'dinner out' story...funny! For Gary Bickers -- I remember the parking director at the Inglewood Sears too. What amazed me about him was his ability to recognize the year and make of every car that pulled in; i.e. on a trip there with my Mom, he said "The gray '46 Dodge, go right two aisles, turn left to the parking spot on the left." He was 'spot' on. For Doris Donaldson -- I don't really know you but, I see you as a lady with class. Do you happen to know the Forrest Summers family up there? For Carl Johnson -- I agree with Vic Edelbrock and his description of the oil companies...(they're way ahead of the curve on losing paying customers because of so many electric cars being bought. It is happening but, much slower than the price at the pump nowadays justifies).

Message: I attend a lot of UCLA Basketball games (with my Uncle Gene Gutierrez HHS) and they've had several former Bruins players' jerseys retired and hung from the top of Pauley Pavillion during half time ceremonies this season. Just wondering if HHS has any retired Cougar basketball jerseys and if so, who they are. Anyone know how the basketball coaches are from the mid 70s (Smith, Coach T, Stucker, Scott, etc.)?

Message: Sharon, this was my 10th grade class photo 1960. Like all the other guys I tried to look cool as possible. Unfortunately for me, Mr. Wetzler didn't think so. Anyway, you look exactly like one of the two girls I used to see driving around the Blvd. in a pearl white '61 Pontiac. Actually, Dick Doughty painted it in Alan Hauge's shop on Imperial just west of Isis. The other girl was a blonde and these two gave me reason enough to cruise the Blvd. I'm sure Murph will remember that Pontiac. Sometimes I still think I'm that cool(thug)sixteen year old.

Message: Thanks to Ken Mercurio, HHS is once again in possession of a list of the best HHS track and field performances (performers) from 1954 through 1964. Ken, and Coach Alex Bravo, kept this list updated through the 1970 track and field season. Cheryl, Kye Courtney's widow, added the incredible 80's "boys and girls" T & F records. The biggest "missing piece" in the HHS track history seems to be the records from the 70's through the 80's. Anyone in the Cougartown family, in posession of, and willing to share, especially those 70- 80's records, or for that matter, any other track or field record, related information, remembrances, newspaper articles, etc., those cotributions are welcome and important. Thank you, in advance for your contribution.

Message: Three Sightings We discovered Studio Antiques in El Segundo today. What an amazing store! The guy running the place eventually asked us where we went to high school and soon we were swapping stories with Mark Escovedo (HHS class of 76). Mark is a nice guy and I highly recommend a trip to this fun, eclectic museum. Mark told us of his own recent sighting of Hap Jacobs during a recent trip to Hermosa. And to all those motor-head snobs who have chastised me for burning cheap gas in my cars...While filling up at the ARCO at 235th and Crenshaw the other day, we realized the guy next to us, gassing up the hot new red Corvette, was none other than Vic Edelbrock himself. We laughed as he used the word bastards to describe the oil companies, and I told him I felt vindicated seeing him use the low- price ARCO fuel. So if Vic doesn't need Techron, neither do I, and neither do you!

Message: Once again, this Sunday is the Hawthorne VFW Breakfast. Starts at 9 - last order in at 11:30. I promise you that you will not be able to eat everything we offer--and no JB, it's not because the food isn't delicious, it's because we're so generous with our portions. If you'll post the banner, all can see the variety. Last note to all that want to save money next Valentine's day, here's a little trick: While in Ralph's market I read a gorgeous Valentine's card aloud to Howie Noodleman(Janny) that was priced at $9.99. I cried while I read it to him.. then he cried and said "ditto" and we took the 20 bucks we saved on the card and went to Coco's with a Senior coupon and had a great dinner. We learn as we go.

Message: The Crenshaw picture brought back some memories for me. I lived within a short bike ride of there, 5th ave and 52nd st to be exact. We moved out of there in the late fifties. By then the neighborhood was going down hill. My brother was headed to Manual Arts High School (which my Dad had attended in the 1930's). Looking back being able to finish my schooling in Hawthorne was one of the best things that ever happened to me. One more thing, Crenshaw High was built two blocks from where we lived.

Message: Sloey..Sloey..Sloey! What am I going to do with you? You're going to get punched or at the very least slapped with your approach! You must have been frightening to HHS girls in the 60s. You probably walked into a party and spotted a nice looking gal and instead of being smooth and starting a conversation, you probably walked up to her and said "Hey babe, want to go to the submarine races?" The approach must be subtle Jim! I'm sure you have seen the Wizard of Oz..At the end the wizard tells Dorothy, "You force me to drastic measures. The only way to get you back to Kansas is for me to take you there myself!" Looks like I'm forced to drastic measures too. The only way to keep you away from the pepper spray or the inevitable slap I'm going to venture up to Solvang in a few months so you and I can go to lunch and I'll demonstrate subtle stalking. Your brother Bill was one of my football coaches in the mid seventies at HHS but I don't think you and I have crossed paths yet. Let me know what month would be good for you! Take care...The Stalker
