Message: I, too, am sorry to hear about Dick Dixon. I raced quarter midgets during the 50's as well as other Cougars with Dickie. In fact, Dick sold me my first Schwinn Continental 10 speed, one of his used bikes. I haven't seen him in a few years, but kept track of him here on C-town. Good thoughts and prayers to his family....

Message: Thank you, Paco for posting the few pictures that were taken at our 45-year reunion this past August. I am glad that one of us was able to figure out how to send them to CT. We were small in number but we had a lot of fun. Now on a melancholy note: So long to one of my favorite lunch items in elementary school -- Twinkees. Haven't had one since we found out they might make me want to shoot the mayor. I will not miss those Snowballs (yuck) and the Cupcakes always tasted like they didn't make it to the store shelf until they were already a couple of years old. But the Twinkees --YUM!

Message: I have to say, I don't check with CT as much as I use to. I have been a member for 15 years now and should come here more often. I want to share a story with all of you. I was at the Pasadena Rose Bowl last weekend selling Italian clothing with my son-in-law. Of course I brought my Accordian. As I played some good italian songs, I notice a man trying on a jacket. I heard this cry from below him. It was his daughter and she seemed upset about something. I said to her, "I bet I know a song you know". She kept crying. I started playing , "It's a Small World" The look on her face was priceless. The crying stopped, a great big smile took its place and I played for her while her father tried on clothes. He didn't buy a thing! But the moral of my story is, "you don't have to buy something to make a someone happy".

Message: Hi. Just checking in to let old friends I haven't been in touch with lately that I am ok after hurricane Sandy. Though I live a half a block from the East River, the water only got to the end of my street and no damage done to my or my loved ones homes. So many weren't so lucky. I haven't heard from some friends in Staten Island and NJ yet and can only hope they are ok. The effects will last for some time. Though not as big as Katrina, in a city and area of this size, the problems are immense. Because of problems with transportation, electricity, food and damage, we have had to rely not only on agencies, but to a large extent on each other. I have been involved in some of the relief work, buying, donating, cooking, child care for those working on clean up efforts, etc. People have been SO amazingly resourceful in organizing and communicating. A group that deserves special commendation is Occupy Sandy (yes, of that Occupy). They started immediately and have become a real force in relief. Many other groups have sprung up spontaneously too. So, a big shout out to people power. The electric companies, Red Cross, FEMA etc. have been fine, but the recovery literally would be impossible without us all pitching in together. but still so much more to do. On a smaller scale, I can't wait to get a regular supply of gasoline to our gas stations.

Message: I've been out on FB politicizing! Now back to CT...Happy Veteran's Day to so many Cougars and others who fought for our freedom to vote for our candidates and, in too many cases, gave their all. I'm sure all Cougars showed their appreciation for their sacrifices by voting last Tuesday! To the young men and women, our kids or grandkids, who might be serving now, a huge hug and thank you too!

Message: Mary Gutierrez was one of our many neighbors on Sundale and 118th street many moons ago. I was very sorry to hear of her passing and always knew that when I bumped into her out here in Torrance that she'd be full of smiles and fun stories. I remember all the family cars that Tom mentioned and a couple more. (Gene's primered car that Mama Gutierrez called 'The pinto' parked in the garage). The Gutierrez's sure loved their luxury cars and yes, they were one of the coolest families on the block. Very sweet and kind people. I'll keep checking here for her service info. My best to Gene, Lou and the rest of Mary's family. See you soon.

Message: I've got sad news. My Aunt Mary (Mary Gutierrez Perez) passed away last night. She had been fighting several health issues over the past couple of years and sadly never recovered from her recent surgery. After graduating from HHS, she worked at the school library and later co-owned Torrance Bakery. She retired from TRW/Northrop a few years ago. I'll always remember her as the cool aunt that would pick up her nephews in her black Chevy Impala with the "Asian eyes" tail lights and take us to the movies. I also remember she later got a big black Ford LTD, like the ones they drove on Hawaii 5-0, and would tell us about her drives to Vegas to see Elvis and Tom Jones. She will be missed. I'll let Cougartown know when her services are arranged.

Message: I like to think that most folks do have face book etc, But I'm like my good classmate Betty . .( Dang Betty do you realize how far back we go ?!) I rely on CT for info about Hawthorne etc, Being at this years Hawthorne birthday bash was good for me! And i wouldn't of known about it if it wasn't for CT. I tend to think that CT may go thru "Dry Spells" But when something note worthy comes up , Look Out! Like it says on your feedback page JB , People are reading this everyday . CT is kind a like the local bar down the st ( if you will), You have regulars and visitors . Seems to me when you post great photos of the area , CT gets more hits or feedback. Or just big news about Hawthorne I look up to you "older" guys just like i looked up to ya when i was in school (And i just turned a mere 62 LOL) And times have changed , HHS is getting a major overhaul and it's good that it is , because you really cant keep time in a bottle (sorry) But you can here at CT! Many good stories come out now and again! We're fortunate to have this connection (CT) and we owe our thanks to JB ! I'm just a visitor here at the JB watering hole! And if i lived nearer, i would be more of a "regular" So thanks to all ya all for being here!

Message: Regarding the Hawthorne VFW breakfast in November: you are correct John in that we are having another venue that day. We will be hosting our annual Thanksgiving dinner for hospitalized veterans from the West LA VA medical center, the Cabrillo House in San Pedro and the Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center, approximately 120 veterans total. The Hawthorne High Jr ROTC color guard will join us to post the colors and some twenty Interact club members will be with us once again to help serve these veterans. A big day for the volunteers but they're used to it...been at this event for over forty years! We will be back serving breakfast in December and hope to see some new faces from CT join us. Let me be the first to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. Janny
