Message: Some things will always be with us: like Babe Ruth, John Kennedy and the closest person in our lives who is no longer with us. So too is it for me as I hear the news of Gary Mykkanen's death. He was not a close friend, nor did I share a ball field with him, but he was one of my most treasured friends and I retain the best memories as a result of knowing him. I saw and talked to him just weeks ago at "Coach's" birthday party. Still bigger than life, a smile and personality to match the life he lived, there will always be a Gary Mykkanen. Without a doubt, he was the Best Athlete that I have ever witnessed including any level, any sport. The ease that he had when he held a baseball, basketball or football is unmatched. A loss yes, but a part of us that will never be lost.

Message: Very sorry to hear about Gary's passing; he was in my opinion the best athlete of my generation in Hawthorne. Chuck Wigley class of 1964 plans to attend the VFW breakfast on Sunday, if someone could be on the look out for him and direct him to the Cougar table.
Yes the Cougar tables are on the right as you come in the room. Hope to see you there Chuck.

Message: John contacted me this morning and I told him I was not ready to post the following:
Our friend and brother, Gary Mykkanen is in a tough spot. I saw him this morning and he was like '63 all over again. He is the poster-board for HHS Cougars. This is all I will say at this time but if you have a relationship; please keep Gary in your thoughts. John, thanks for the forum.
I will Gary and thanks for the post.

Message: John, This is a photo I took of Gene Gutierrez' '64 Lincoln that Alan Hauge painted in his shop on Imperial Hwy. There were many coats of clear lacquer and buffed to a mirror finish. I think it would really be cool to see cars from back in the day from anyone on this list. We could start with yours.
Hey Jim, I'll have to dig one out from somewhere. Don't see the Lincoln either but sure you'll send it. Thanks

Message: Did everyone enjoy the shuttle heading for its new home at Exposition Park? Quite a sight! And the weight on the roads such planning to get that thing 12 miles down the road without caving in the roads. We, the class of '66, are responsible for that safe transition, or at least one of its members is responsible. Kenny Slaughter and his company Trench Shoring provided 200 trucks loaded with the steel plates that enabled the safe transiion of the shuttle to its new home!
I knew it had to be a Cougar doing that Thanks Jim AND Ken

Message: Hi John, Every once in awhile I go on Google Earth, down on the street level, and cruise around the old neighborhood. I always get a little sad when places are gone now. In the photo, I look to be about eight years old, so this photo was taken around 1952. Judy DeGrazia's house is the second house from the corner (behind me) and across the street from Francis, Colleen and Maureen Trott's house. Gene Gutierrez's house is next door to the East and David Winkley lived next door to the West. Love the Buick.

Thanks Jim, the Buick and the houses take me back for sure.

Message: What happened to you 'faithful few' who normally make it to homecoming??! including you JB? I scanned the bleachers and as far as I could tell I was the only pre-2000 alum there
1 The team played poorly and I left just before halftime with HHS down 14-0. I had a good talk with the band director who said homecoming halftime 2013 will be all Beach Boys. A short chat with the dean of students was interesting as he said gang activity is at a minimum and students i talked to all said they like the principal Mark Newell and he is doing a good job. As I left I realized it was 40 years ago I was a 14 year old freshman enjoying homecoming! How time flies!
Had company last night Clark, just couldn't get down for the game. Glad you made it to the game.

Message: RE: DONATIONS TO HHS PROGRAMS Is it me, or did that temp needle on our HHS sports program stop completely?? Don't make me have to go back to the VFW Bingo hall and shake those poor old ladies down again. If you all just gave $5.00, that needle would start moving up like crazy. How could we have given over $10,000 one year and can't get the needle to $3,000 this year??? Questions, questions! FYI~~this program doesn't stop, so why should we. I'll have a donation jar at the VFW breakfast and for those that can't dig deep, your breakfast portions will get a little smaller and the price will be a little larger. (now, there's a real threat).
I know, what happened to the donors this year? It's saddening. Please give what you can folks. HHS is our school and Leuzinger is kicking our behinds.

Message: I hope I'm not stealing Linda Sutton Dill's (67)cougar siting, but I saw her at the MB Hometown Fair today. She is so nice. I really enjoyed visiting with her and reminiscing about growing up in Del Aire. John - if we're able to make the April cruise night, we'll drive the Woodie. Of all the cars that Cal has restored, this one is my favorite. Hey - Cal saw Karen Harrison (70) & Eric Koch (70) at the fair on Saturday - is that another Cougar siting?
Come on Noreen, don't be a Sighting hog Thanks and see you and Cal in April.

Message: Many of us that have followed the Beach Boys over the years or some even knew them in high school knows some of the things Mike Love has done over the years. He can say what he wants but I think I'll believe Brian, Al, and David. As Brian said, "I'm disappointed and can't understand why he (Love) doesn't want to tour with Al, David and me," he told CNN. "We are out here having so much fun. After all, we are the real Beach Boys."
Exactly, Not sure Mike Love wrote that piece for the Times either. Sounds too eloquent for Mike. More to it than what's been said, I believe.

Message: I'm sad to hear of Sheriff Johns passing. I was on his show in 59 or 60 and remember him being very kind on and off camera. I read the Times article about the Beach Boys and I believe its true. The media has a way of generating gossip for its own sake and I'm sure Mike Love was their latest target. I agree that Mike's Beach Boys, isnt as good as the originals but I believe it when he said his smaller venue dates were set months ago. Perhaps with the success of the 50th anniversary tour, there will be more in the future.

Message: For those of you who don't get South Bay football scores..HHS went down to Culver City last night 41-0. Looks like a poor year for the current Cougs this year. For those who wonder who is tough these days, Narbonne is the South Bay powerhouse with signature wins over perenial powers Long Beach Poly and Mater Dei. West Torrance looks pretty strong and Mira Costa is tough once again with head coach Donny Morrow(Aviation 78) at the helm. I played with Donny at El Camino in '79. Homecoming might be a chance at a win as we are playing Morningside this year.
