Message: Happy Birthday Coach!! He looks great and certainly is loved by many. I got a kick out of seeing my old Spanish teacher, Mr. Bravo, he was pretty intense but I enjoyed his classes, would love to talk to him again. Looking forward to Cruise night tomorrow, my brother is finally letting me tag along! LOL!!
Thanks Deb, see you there too.

Message: I have an unusual recollection of Coach Chauncey, who would substitute for Mr. Jack as a driver-training instructor. I recall the Coach's droll humor and his patience with us teenage would-be drivers as we drove around the South Bay in a white Crown Vic from Chaffee Ford. After 44 years and over a million miles, I must have learned something.

Message: Dennis Kilroy: I never grow tired of meeting with loyal HHS Knights like yourself! See you Saturday! Is anyone from Cougartown in contact with Roberta (Bobby) Burkett? I wish you'd get her to cruise night as she was my freshman english teacher at HHS and I'd like to see her again to thank her for her hard work back in '72! Karen Fraser, you better start praying for your Fighting Irish now as we (USC) are #1 in the country and ready for a boot kicking of Notre Dame and UCLA! Sorry John but it's that season again! If anyone from Cougartown wants to attend an HHS football game other than homecoming, e-mail me and I'll join you! I wouldn't mind seeing a game other than homecoming and I've known coach Swain for many years and I'm sure he's working hard to produce a winning squad!
Clark, you didn't just JINX USC, did you?

Message: That was a "rip roarer" of a 'birthday party---seeing all those guys and the stories that go along with them really was special! You know that with almost all of those 'kids' -- go memories! That set back my "halfheimeres" forever!! It's interesting how changed some of them looked--of course they were older--the white hair was showing--what the hell should I suspect -- these "kids" are only in their 70's! Plunk! Thanks again John for all your work on behalf of HHS and all the "kids"! True story-- when HHS first started in 1951 -- Cap and I were involved in recommending the football equipment -- the helmets, particularly. We wanted the Rydell helmet which was a couple dollars more expensive than the Wilson R/P helmet! Rydell had the suspension in them and the Wilson just had sponge! The business manager ordered the Wilson because it was less expensive! One of our first practice games, one of the kids made a tackle and ended up with a 2 inch gash in his head! The Vice Principal was there at this game -- as we're going out for the first half I showed him the injury and told him that he was coaching from now on, until we got the Rydell helmets. The Rydell helmets arrived the next Thursday! Stay well--as ever, Ol' Coach Hal Chauncey
Hi Coach, Great story as always and thanks for the opportunity for all the early footballers to get back together. After all, if it wasn't for you, most of these guys would never have a chance to see each other What a who's who of early HHS Football. With you, Cap, and these early teams setting the stage for future pride and tradition at HHS. In retrospect I, for one, am so grateful you took that job. It made all the difference in countless Cougar lives to follow. That showed last Saturday as about 200 "old guys" showed up to honor not just their Coach, but a true friend for over a half century. Thanks Coach for all you've done, and been, to so many "kids" through the years. Great Party for sure and as the Beach Boys once said, "Let's Do It Again". WE LOVE YOU MAAAANN!!!

Message: Hawthorne High Football starts this Friday with their opener at Torrance High at 7 pm. The Cougars have their first home game on August 31st against Lawndale. The Daily Breeze has been running the prep football news all week and today featured the Ocean League. Here is what they say about the "outlook" : "Fourth time is the charm, right? That is what Hawthorne is hoping for, bringing back James Swain for his fourth stint as the program's head coach. Swain hopes to carry on some of the good vibrations started by Coach Joe Kanach the last two years."
Hi Karen, let's hope Coach Swain and the 2012 team is up to the task.

Message: John its been a great Month for the Class of 77 our Reunion was Amazing. Jill & Michelle did a wonderful job. Now I look forward to a night at Foster's with the rest of my Cougar Buddies! And as far as the Modernization of HHS. It is sad but we need to prepare a New Home for the Next Generation of Cougars. With New Facilities you can also attract and retain better Faculty and Staff. And when we come back to visit we can say how it used to be in the olden days! I look forward to hanging out with everybody. Hopefully alot of the 70's people will come out. Clark gets tired of talking to me, he needs some fresh blood! (Ok just kidding).
Hey Dennis, Glad you had a great time at your reunion. I know how magical they can be and we are getting ready for our 50th at the end of next month. All you 62ers out there, if you're sitting on the fence, please join in your reunion. You won't regret it. See you next Saturday, Dennis and the rest of our Cougar family, at Fosters about 5pm.

Message: Maybe the best kept secret ever about HHS got pulled off yesterday. Coach Hal Chancey was expecting to have a nice quiet lunch with his family for his 90th birthday; instead he has greeted by about 200 of the people he mentored while at HHS. There were teachers, coaches and students from the 50s, 60s and 70s at Old Ranch Golf Club to celebrate his legacy at HHS and in Hawthorne. I am sure you will be see a lot of what went on because John Baker and Richard Sloan took a lot of pictures. I hope they publish the program because it was an amazing group of speakers. Great fun seeing all the old coaches; who by the way turn out to be not that old. Here is to the next 90 years.
Thanks Gary, yes a fun birthday celebration for someone HHS will never ever forget. Thanks to all who were there and yes there will be pictures. Give me a couple of days to get Rich's pictures and I will add them all.

Message: I would like to add my 2 cents about our old High School being demolished. I am just as nostalgic as the next person and have fond memories of our high school when i attended in the early 1970's. Built in the Mid-Century Modern Style, Hawthorne High was a great campus to be a part of the first 30 years of it's existence. But in the Mid 80's they needed more classroom space so they started planting trailers in the spaces between the original buildings. There was no order to their placement, like brown boxy spaceships landing from another planet. Then they built those wonderful 2 story stucco wooden boxes, (that look nothing like the original school buildings they sat next to,) at the prominent exterior corners of the school. Then the cafeteria, (that looks like the starship enterprise landing on senior square,) was added. I teach architecture at El Camino and went to our old high school every year for the past 30 years to recruit students for my program. It made me sad to see our school slowly change from what it once was. The point i am trying to make here is that our school, that i am so proud of, had evolved into a mish-mash of questionable architecture that did not match the original buildings and there was no sense of order as to where the new buildings were located. The new High School Design has a wonderful order to where academic buildings are located and will be more uplifting & an easy circulation pattern for the students to get from class to class quickly. In our case, I think the old saying "You can never go home again" is true. Everything isn't that way though, some classmates of mine that attended St. Josephs Parochial School in the 60's are getting together next weekend for a reunion and to take a tour of our old school that really hasn't changed much at all, since it was built in 1923....
Thanks Mike for your input and observations.
