Message: In between all of today's cookouts, parades, fireworks and other festivities, Americans should take a little time to reflect on what unites all of us. Being patriotic on this 236th Independence Day should mean redirecting ourselves to that unity. Happy 4th JB and thanks for keeping all of us Cougars united.

Message: Re: THE HAWTHORNE VFW FIREWORK STAND. Clark, I will never know how you walked away with a bag of "anything" for $10.00! I figure that for that amount you could get a Piccolo Pete, a punk and a handshake from me & the handshake would be the cheapest thing on that list. But I will clue you in that if you go to TNT's website, "www.TNTfireworks.com" & sign up now, within seconds they'll shoot you an email coupon for $10.00 off a purchase of $50.00 or more, then mention Cougartown and get another 10% off your total price. And Clark, don't show up today with a coupon asking for a rebate. Look for us on El Segundo and Haw. Bl. in front of Albertson's and it's now or never. We're open till 10:00 pm..and yes, I will shake your hand on every sale. Better still "A free trip to Hawaii with every purchase of $50.00 or more & I'll kiss ya!" How's that for salesmanship?

Message: I was watching the evening news tonight after dinner and suddenly it struck me that tomorrow is the 4th and I had yet to do my obligatory pilgrimage to the Hawthorne VFW fireworks stand. I jumped in my car and shot over to El Segundo & Hawthorne Bl. Commander Jan & Judy were working hard and pointed me to some good stuff and I bought ten bucks worth, got my Cougartown discount and was on my way. I've been going to the VFW fireworks stand since 1962 (four years of age). The stand used to be on the corner of Imperial & Cedar on a vacant lot. In the early 60s I would go bang on the back door and the commander (Mr. Sylvester would give me a big discount on a big box. I told Jan that story today in an attempt to get a similar deal. He pointed out that their biggest box now is over 900 pieces and cost $543!!! I seem to recall the big "Block Buster' box used to be about $40 in the mid 70s. The 4th was my favorite holiday in Hawthorne, the big Hawthorne parade, the Hawthorne fair..what fun!! Give me a time machine please!

Message: Hey, John Boy; I received your E-mail of thanks for the $10.00 dues check. Just for grins, I checked the 62 alumni listing, can't believe I have been a member for 8 years. I also noticed that there are a lot of DEAD BEATS on the list. I find that hard to believe, and if I'm willing to part with a ten spot, which is a feat in itself, what's wrong with the rest of the list(s). I didn't check the other alumni years, but I'm sure the same is true, it's a pretty cheap price for the fun I have on here. LOL, I'd have a lot more fun if you wouldn't censor my posts about Firemen LOL, as you can see I am usually very blunt, but I do speak the truth, except when I'm joking around which is most of the time. It kind of Irks me, makes me think back to when I was pushing a plack & white around many, many moos ago. I never wrote traffic citations, however, when I saw a car without current registration, I always gave them a zinger (Traffic Cite). I figuered if I had to pay my registration, they should have to pay their's. anyhow, just venting, it's a slow day on the water. Jorge

Message: Hi Guys. I recently published THE EIGHT-FINGERED CRIMINAL'S SON, a collection of quirky stories about growing up in Hawthorne. John Baker and Cougartown Hawthornians really helped me get the book off the ground. THANK YOU! I'll be at THE BOOK FROG in Rolling Hills this Saturday (June 30) at 2 pm for a signing and reading. Pete Ledesma (HHS class of '79) owns The Book Frog and it's a great store. Pete's a former stand-up comic and he'll be hosting the event. He used to do a dead on Elvis act as "Pete the Pelvis." Perhaps I can get him to sing Hound Dog. It should be a lot of fun. If you're in the area come on out. 310.265.2665 - 550 Deep Valley Drive Rolling Hills Estates CA 90274

Prelims on NBC Sports Network at 3PM Monday and Finals Tuesday at 7PM on NBC. As an 18 year old Freshman at U of Arizona he won the NCAA Championship in the 100 Yd. breaststroke and set a new American record in the event in March. Very tough against 25-30 year olds but keep your fingers crossed. Grandparents are very nervous.

Message: Hey George, I am with you. I think I learned more from my grandparents than maybe even my parents. But....you gotta admit, a lot of the "old folks" now days look a lot younger and are a lot more active physically than they used to be! Although, my last grandmother lived to 103 and was still doing the Polka at 102! Hmmm on second thought..... If I can do it, I'll save a Polka for you at our reunion!! LOL
