Message: Dean Morris, you said we need someone to beat the Ducks? Boise State played them heads up 08 & 09 and beat em both times with Blount and Lamichael etc. It's too bad that the nation didn't get to see Kellen Moore disect a defense like a frog in one of the good games this fall in the bcs. The senior class was 50-3. They lost 3 games by a total of 5 points. Don't play anybody? Georgia, V-tech, TCU, Oklahoma, Oregon and O-state. It's too bad that our Q-B didn't get a little more recognition just for the accomplishment of being the winningest QB ever, let alone maybe 1 vote for the Heisman like last year and he had a better year this year than last. John Rout, how bout them Bruins again? Gotta love em. MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU. Jake N Jude

Message: Food Giant Memories- The best looking checkers worked at Food Giant, so there was always good eye candy to enjoy. Also, seemed like HHS had an inside connection for getting bubbly to students who wanted to party. We had some fun with Cold Duck in the parking lot on many a weekend night. I think Ray Millman was our connection, but with nearly 40 years of time passing, Officer Krupski, I really can't be sure. It might have been Mike Brodeur or someone else. Wishing a Happy New Year for all Cougars tonight and 2012! This is going to by a breakout year for Americans as the economy finally gets in gear, home foreclosures slow and the war winds down bringing home our young warriors after a decade long battle. Dean
PS Also have to wish my Stanford Cardinal a near perfect season with a win in the Fiesta Bowl Monday. Maybe the Tide and Tigers will play another 10-7 snorer and we can slip into a dispute tide. Congrats to USC on bringing back Matt Barkley and the best receiving corps in the country. All of football will be better for a few more teams who can beat the damn Ducks!

Message: Oh the memories that Susan Adams conjured. And yes Susan, the Ocean Gate hill indeed crests at 138th Street. I wonder how many of us recall having to park on that hill as part of our first driver test back in the sixties. Well Cougs, another year is in the books, and I wish everyone a very happy and prosperous 2012.

Message: Hey Susan, great memories. I sort of remember Art's Mkt. Though I don't remember where it was. I think the best unhealthy thing I ever ate was a deep fried burrito from Taco Tio on Hawthorne Bl. N. of El Segundo. Man, they were the best...and only 2,000 calories ea.! Janet you are right. My Mom winning Queen for a Day was a big deal for us. I think it made the local paper. The fact that my dad worked for the paper probably cinched that. Although, in those days, it would probably have been local news anyway. Kathy is doing fine. Thanks for asking. She is an RN working for Kaiser. She always spoke very highly of you as well.

Message: Reading the feedback at Cougartown has made a flood of long forgotten memories of Hawthorne..The photo of Thriftymart made me think of other stores. It made me think of Food Giant, remember that market? There was a huge giant farmer with a basket of food tumbling out, kinda like the jolly green giant. A few stores down was Thriftys where my friends and I would go walking and purchase a two scoop ice cream cone for 5 cents a scoop. Melody Music where you could listen to music 45's in a booth. Olive Watson an underwear store where clerks actually fitted you for your bras..I got my first one there (actually it looked like a tee shirt with straps) Art's Market was another memory, they had the best Mexican food there, I would go there for school time lunch-they had these things called "bean cups", a taco shell deep fried in the shape of a cup filled with refried beans and piled high with melted cheese. They cost 25 cents, quite filling! Years later, I made them for my kids, and they were a favorite. Speaking of yummy food, BBQ Pete's was another good food memory. After serving in WWII, my dad got a job at Standard Oil Refinery where he worked until he retired. I remember Chevron came up with a special gas "with techron" we were outraged that it cost 35 cents a gallon! Also, back in the day, a lot of my friends' parents worked in big factories but no one seemed to know exactly what their dads actually did there... Another Beach Boy comment, I think they played at P.O.P. one time, I remember their red and white striped shirts they wore. Does anyone remember the big hill on Ocean Gate? I think it was by 138th St. I used to fly down that hill on my bike, lucky to have survived that, I guess. Also I wonder if anyone remembers the huge circus cannon in someone's backyard (135th St. I believe). I also have a funny story about the Venus Massage place. I was looking for a job in the newspaper and there was an ad that said "wanted, receptonist no experience necessary, will train" That's all it said, and an address. As I drove down Imperial, the area got seedier. I finally found the small building. You can imagine my surprise when the woman behind the desk was in a tasseled sequined outfit, I asked her if I was in the right place, she assured me I was, When the conversation turned to income, she said how much the hourly wage was, then said but if you "play your cards right, you can make from 200 to 300 dollars a week. I thanked her for her time then high-tailed out of there! Lesson learned ,"if it sounds to good to be true"...

Message: Hey John, you're right. My mother won Queen For A Day in, I believe, 1956. That's a story in itself. She didn't tell anyone she was going. She just got on a bus and went to the program and got on...and WON! Someone from the furniture store next to where my dad worked came over and said "Frank, your wife is on television". That's the first he knew about it. It was quite a big deal for us at the time.

Message: Well, the holiday season is upon us and I wish everyone the very best. Sitting in my recliner with my afghan covering me, fire going in the fireplace, I was watching The Price Is Right this morning. Some lady named Stephanie from Hawthorne managed to make it to the Showdown and won over $40,000 in prices. Congratulations to her! Just thought I would share this with everyone. Many years ago, I was on the Newlywed game and one of the questions I was asked was "what was my favorite city" and I replied "HAWTHORNE". Wrong answer. My wife then thought it was Las Vegas. OH well, we didn't win and I took a brow beating of course for a long time after because of that answer. So, sitting here in my recliner by the fire, I still think and reminisce of ole Hawthorne alot these days.....

Message: Jerry Miles, thanks for bringing back some good memories of the Beach Boys concert in Long Beach with that promotional ad from 1981. Could you possibly send me a copy of the graphics? Can't believe 2012 is just days away. Hawthorne New Year's Eve memories include watching Dick Clark from Times Square on TV, playing table hockey with my bros to stay awake, having an eggnog toast at midnight with family and then looking outside to watch Mr. S. fire off his rifle to celebrate. Years later, I was up on my parent's roof and saw a bullet stuck in the shingles. Might have been from a New Year's long ago. For those Cougars living near or in Orange, come by and say hello at my club, Snap Fitness, just down the street from the Honda Center. Wishing all Cougars a safe and Happy 2012.

Thank you John for what you have done keeping us all together...you are the best! Now, for some sad news...I just received an email from Eileen and Dennis Campbell letting me know that Paula Johnson, class of 64, died this past week. Her funeral will be Wednesday in Boston. Paula was a lot of fun in high school. She will be missed!
