Message: I remember driving south a few miles and seeing the Beach Boys appear in a free outdoor concert by the Queen Mary with a couple of other acts that was part of a TV special. I forget if it was for a 4th of July special, but it was either in the late 70s or early 80s. If anyone remembers this concert can you fill in my memory gaps? I think Rick Springfield was on stage, too. Also, are there any good Beach Boys tribute bands doing the SoCal club scene worth seeing? Wishing everybody a very Merry Christmas!

Nice young lady (as I expect all female Cougars to be) and we chatted about HHS now and then. I'm hunting for a pre 1970 Cougar now! Maybe the Santa at the Santa photo stand is a Cougar! I'll find out....

Message: I have been following the Beach Boys thread on Cougartown. And to my way of thinking, any 50th year celebration has to start where it began in Hawthorne. Possibly, even, at our honorable Alma Mater, HHS. What more fitting a place to kick off a grand and glorious celebration. After all, some of us remember the garage practices and assembly performances that happened in our beloved hometown. Who cares where it goes after that. Sacramento, can be next since it sounds as if that may have been where the first “public” performances occurred. After that the world. A venue in Hawtorne… hey, is the Mall available? I say tear it down, build a performance space (modeled after the Plaza Theater)… maybe even name it after the BB’s. Bottom line, every Hawhornite should tweet, friend, email, blog, or whatever to all of the parties involved in this party stating that the only appropriate place to begin is in Hawthorne.

Message: Wow, great pic Neil. The latest model car I see in the lot is a "57 (station wagon). So I suppose It's about that year. What struck me while looking at that picture is that there is probably well over a million dollars worth of automobiles (todays dollars) in that lot that could have been purchased for maybe $75,000 or less at the time!! Thanks for the memory. Tom

Message: From a rather obscure website "HAMB" http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/ which has thousands of old scanned photos of Americana...I stumbled onto this old rare black & white photo of what was once Thriftimart next to the HHS. *Notice the building at far right could be a classroom building & the two spindly palm trees at the doorway were the giveaway for me that this is indeed the Big "T". Not a great find but simply another piece of the history of Hawthorne High.

Message: To all who know my brother Ernie. He was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma last week. He has been feeling not so hot these days and had his first chemo on Monday. He's now at home and will, I'm sure, start to get his strength back as time goes on. The doctor says his prognosis looks good and we are all happy to hear that. He has been such a loyal HHS alumni and I'm sure many happy thoughts will go out for him. He deserves it. I am taking our 85 year old mom to Florida next month to see him.

Message: Just a reminder to all Cougs that the Hawthorne VFW will be having their monthly breakfast this Sunday December 18 from 9am to 11:30am. I'm scratching the sausage's this month and replacing it with ham. There has also been a modest increase in our cost... a $7.00 donation. I'm giving you plenty of food for a small price. I don't think you will find that price at any restaurant for all that we serve you. Come join us on Sunday, meet with other Cougars, enjoy a Bloody Mary or Mimosa before, during or after breakfast, take in some NFL football in our canteen, eat a great breakfast and most of all...you're supporting our veterans programs! Message: I think there were several Beach Boys concerts in the HHS gym but the one I still have documentation for and am sure I attended was held on February 15, 1963, 8:00 P.M. until midnight. It was presented by the Hawthorne Youth Canteen and sponsored by Hawthorne Department of Parks and Recreation. Tickets cost fifty cents for non-members and twenty-five cents for members. School clothes only please. And in 1963 “school clothes only” actually meant something.

Message: Jerry all I can remember is that they called an assembly in the gym and Peter, Paul, and Mary came on stage and started singing. Were you at our freshman breakfast when the Beach Boys came in and started playing? I'll never forget that day. We had moved from Redondo Beach. I grew up there and was very upset we had to leave the beach. I pouted all summer about the move. After that breakfast I went home and thanked my parents for moving. I made so many friends at HHS that are still friends to this day. Do any 1966'ers remember that breakfast?
You are right Jerry, it was Casey Kasem not Wink Martindale.

Message: Sharon, I’ll back you up on the Beach Boys. In fact, I think that was the night my hearing trouble started as I set right next to the speaker most of the night in the boy’s gym. I also remember Casey Kasem hosting the canteen dances. I don’t remember Wink Martindale doing that but he might have also. But for the life of me I have no memory of Peter, Paul, and Mary being there. Do you remember the when’s and whys of it? They were already pretty big in 1962.

Message: When I was a freshman at HHS, I remember the Beach Boys playing at several of the Friday night after-game dances. I used to think how cool it was that they were famous, but still cared about HHS. I remember Peter, Paul, and Mary coming to play at an assembly. I thought that's how all high school's were. We used to have D.J.'s like Wink Martindale and several others come to the Hawthorne youth dances and HHS dances and D.J. them. Does anyone remember this?

Message: Here's my two cents on Beach Boys concerts. Several "Beach Boys" dances sponsored by Hawthorne Youth Canteen right in the boys gym were held in 61 and/or 62. Please forgive my memory gets a bit spotty. I still have the first Live album recorded in Sacramento. Just a few scratchs but otherwise in very good condition for an album that was played endlessly on repeat on my parent's Magnavox stereo. Merry Christmas, Cougars.
