Message: I wish I could be at the Hawthorne Hysterical Society event this weekend but I am booked up with the San Clemente Ocean Festival. This is our 2nd year volunteering and our first year in charge of the Lucky Duck Race booth. There is a Woody show on the pier both days, about 30 cars per day, if anyone is in the area park at San Clemente High School (I-5 and Ave Pico) and take the free shuttle. Fun in the Sun on the beach and there is a live King Neptune and a Lovely Mermaid Ariel walking around all weekend (and she is gorgeous, let me tell ya.) Sat and Sunday both so you can do HHS on Saturday and San Clemente on Sunday.

Message: Didn't dawn on me that Lions Drag Strip was named for the fraternal organization. (Whatever became of Lola Lyons-daughter of the Sporting Goods Store -- I nearly asked her to go steady in 8th grade) Back to Lions Drag Strip. Went there one evening with some of the Gross Brothers and saw the "Little Red Wagon" do a wheel stand for the entire quarter mile. Very impressive. The next night while tooling about town in my Dad's Buick Skylark I tried to pop a wheelie by revving up the engine to 8 gazillion RPM and then dropping the automatic transmission in "L." There are still parts of the transmission embedded in asphalt on the 800 block of Freeman. (or something like that?)

Message: Confession: Just got back from a trip down Imperial Hwy traveling west ( on my way down to El Segundo ) and have to say that I got lost. Use to be that you just went in a straight line all the way to the beach--but not so much anymore. Thought I was going to get on a freeway a couple of times. I use to love traveling West on all those streets in the 60's. Lots of trees and usually a 2 lane road. Now that's just a memory in the windmills in my mind. (why, oh why do I think that JB is going to have a hayday with that last comment.) See you all next Saturday at the Good Neighbor's day. We'll be in the VFW booth signing you up for active duty.

Message: To Jerry, I remember when Montie Montana came to my school. But (for me) that was kindergarden and 1st grade, at 98th Street School in Westchester. I saw someone bring Montie's shirt, boots and rope into the shop on Pawn Stars, worth around $6,000. Sold it for $3,000. And to George, Steve and all the curious out there, I finally solved the cop/donut equation. For a thorough explanation, you can read

Message: Hey, Steve Fraser; LOL, Actually, I was going to become a fireman before I decided on a real career. The problem was, I couldn't pass the fire department backgroung investigation. When the fire department conducted my background, their investigator found out that my parents were married and that disqualified me from being a fireman. Hey Steve, were you one of those guys that slept with men, wore smelly fire retardent canvas turnouts and liked sliding down poles too ?.Jorge

Message: I ran across an old photo the other day that brought back some mighty fine memories. I’m not sure if HIS kids were so blessed but every year the Wiseburn grade schools would be treated to a show by Monty Montana. He was one of the best trick ropers and rider in the world and even roped our president, Ike, at his inaugural. His show was normally in conjunction with a bicycle rodeo roundup where all the kids would bring their bikes for a few races and safety inspections. I remember they would always pick one really ratty one to win the shake, rattle, and roll award. I guess you would be accused of bullying if you did that today. But then it just made for a fun day. As Monty also always rode in the Rose Parade too, a record total of 60 before he passed, it was always fun seeing someone you knew every New Year’s Day.

Message: Hey, Fireman Jim;LOL, I drank a lot of black coffee, but didn't do to many donuts, however, they were always there & available at Winchell's. A little trivia, Walter Winchell (old time newscaster) started his donut franchises with a standing corporate order, "No law enforcement officer will ever be charged for a donut or coffee" at his stores. Subsequently, they became a safe place to write a report as usually other units were there also writing reports & having coffee. On the other note, Winchell's donut shops were rarely robbed as he (Winchell) had built in security, very wise man. I don't think that Winchell's order stands today though. Hey, Jim, my training officer told me to never trust a Fireman, because they sleep with other men & like to slide down poles. Luv ya man, hope all is well. Jorge
