Message: 50 years ago today (March 13, 1961) the Dominator ran aground at the tip of Palos Verdes. While no lives were lost nor injuries sustained, that fateful day set one of the more prominent landmarks of the South Bay, and the most notable shipwreck of the California Coast. I don't think that any one of us, alive at that time, didn't venture out to the point to see the once proud freighter as it turned into a now rusty hulk.

Message: Hey, Judy; That's funny, now the truth come out about you 60's girls camoflaging & enhancing your bras. Well, us 60's guys used to starch our underwear and then insert a big potato. I didn't find out I was doing it all wrong until somebody told me that the potato was suposed to go in the front.Jorge
Sad old joke from the 50s Jorge.

Message: Received sad news from Ron Petch ('62) this morning. HHS has lost another Cougar. Steve Andersen ('60) passed away at 3:30 a.m., Sunday, March 13th, Torrance, Ca. Steve requested that there be no service. Steves' family were long time residents of Hawthorne. He is survived by two brothers, John and Larry, and 2 daughters, Greta and Laurel. Steve was class president at HHS in 1960. He was a 3 varsity sport letterman at HHS, football, basketball and baseball. He was the quarterback of the first Bay League Championship Team in 1959 that went on to play in the CIF Finals in the L.A. Coliseum against Long Beach Poly. He coached Pop Warner Football and Little League Baseball in the Hawthorne area. He graduated from UCLA then spent 2 years in the U.S. Army. He went on to teach/coach at Mira Costa High School where he and Bobby Hunter ('60) were co-head coaches for the varsity football team. After teaching he attended law school; got his law degree and practiced Real Estate Law in the South Bay. Steve was the Mayor of Hawthorne and served as City Councilman for many years. Steve battled diabetes and multiple strokes over the last few years. He resided at Sunset Assisted Living in Torrance. Many thanks to Ron Petch for his continued support as a caregiver and friend, taking care of all of Steve's needs and requirements. Steve will be missed by all of us who knew him.
Very sorry to hear the news about Steve. Great guy and all around humanitarian who made a difference in many people's lives. Thanks Rich and Ron for the information.

Message: BLOW UP SLIPS... Never heard of those, but what a concept! I know that I mentioned this fact 11 years ago here in CT, and worth giving a few oldsters another laugh from the early 60's..here goes: Back in the 60's, we gals use to starch our petty slips the old fashioned way, dip them in heavy duty starch, hang them up on a clothes line (open circle like a tortilla) and let them dry stiff as a board. For Christmas we'd tie bells on them. And we would spray starch our bras and iron them into a point to set the look off just right. We all looked like a characters out of Edward Scissorhand. We did what we had to do to have "the look!" We even use to use lacquer for hair spray as everything had to be bigger and stiffer than life. If I was at Disneyland today, I would sing the Bibbity Bobbity Boo song from start to finish. (practicing for my new job as the Fairy God-Mother on the Electric Lite Parade.)

Message: Good evening Cougars What a morning! The news had me on alert for 8:32am in the San Pedro area. Not a shake, rattle, roll or splash,Thank God! I was so ready to jump in my car and hightail it to Hawthorne, if need be. A place I felt safe in growing up and still love Hawthorne though there are lotsa changes. A person is still close enough to the beach in Hawthorne yet safer than those at the shoreline. The beach areas deal with more morning overcast, orange county and the valley more heat and Hawthorne weather is in the middle of just right! They also still have Fosters and Pizza Show and a few friends still hanging in the area. We are blessed and I'm glad today went ok for all. I too, felt sad to hear the loss of another Hawthornian. May his family feel comfort and strength in good memories. Take care and a Goodnight to everyone! Cathie

Message: Went out to the local beaches this morning to see what a wave coming over 12,000 miles at 500 miles/hour would look like. Didn't see any giant waves anywhere in California, but became inspired after enjoyin some smokes and settling on a song titled "Surfin a Tsunami Today". It is sort of a blend between Surfin Safari and Surfin USA. I was goin to pencil in the lyrics myself(as if anyone writes things in long hand anymore), but thought it might be more fun as a challenge to some of the best and brightest of CT fans(Jerry Miles, JB Schroeder, Walt our Surfer Boy Holt, etc). Have some fun with it and be glad that life as we know it in the Hawthorne and the South Bay did not come to an end today.
Thanks Dean, Glad someone had the guts to head toward the beach.

Message: James Gibson, I think someone is fishing with a fishy story! I checked out that post and can find nothing to indicate any of it is true, All connections to the name "therockislandboys" lead to the east coast and not a HHS music teacher. All someone really needs to do is call CVUHSD and ask em if they are tearing down the School. Good eye spotting that one James.
I do know that Leuzinger is under major construction, or will be if no one stops it. I've heard the Leuzinger shop building(s) is already gone.

Message: This is the first talk of tearing down the high school and building a new one. If it is true, what is it going to look like and where are they going to put Senior Square. What about Nyman Hall. Will they rename the new auditorium? Will they put a pool table in the teachers lounge? So many questions and no answears. Will they roof the dressing rooms at the pool? Can they reroute the train Tracks?
Haven't heard anything.

Message: The following message was posted on the Brian Wilson web site: They're building a new High School on the site of Hawthorne High School (where Brian, Carl, Dennis and Al attended) in Hawthorne, California. I'm a Music Teacher there and have 5 classes of Music Appreciation. We also have a Band and Choral director. And yes, we've studied in depth all the Music History about The Beach Boys, etc. I'm posting this to see if Brian wants to take one last tour of Hawthorne H.S. before its demolished and the new school rises. Construction starts the day after graduation. And the Music buldings will be the first to go! Administrator: If Brian is interested in a tour, I can arrange it. Just post a response here. It can be a private tour or a public one with a few cameras recording it. Whatever Brian wants can be arranged. We would really like to see Brian Wilson at Hawthorne High School.

Message: Good morning Cougars! All kidding aside John, your wife is beautiful. Marriage is a good thing. 24/7 elder care of my mom, helping raise grandaughter and part time work at Disney, if I were a guy I wouldn't date myself these days (This too shall pass). I would like to find Mr. Wonderful, Prince charming, the whole fairytale eventually!!! What's this Gas doing at $4 per gallon? I started driving at 19 yrs. old and it was 19 cents per gallon (they don't even have a cent sign on this computer) It got crazy when it hit 25 cents and we waited in long lines for the best price. Why I took the bus from Broadway and 120th street in Hawthorne to Hermosa Pier for 25 cents the whole summer! Today the big deal is 49 cent Del Tacos. My bro. John worked Taco Tio in front of the plaza and they were what, 19 cents? It's cheaper to buy from the $ menu these days but healthier to eat at home (additives) guess that's when they mean less is more. I do remember the Plaza theatre. My grandma took me there and couldn't get me out from under the seat cause I thought the dinasaurs were going to bite me! Well, when you are a kid things seem so real and Bigger too, right? Anita, you go girl. That info on dates was funny and I agree, they are delicious! I've had a few days off, see why working keeps some people out of trouble. Everyone enjoy today and make it Beautiful. Tootles Cathie
Thanks Cathie

Message: My dad, Hector Nadal, passed away peacefully this weekend at the age of 86, surrounded by my mom and their children. He worked for Northrop and TRW for 40 years, was an avid Ham Radio operator, totally restored a 1931 Model A Ford and had been married to my mom and living in the same Hawthorne home for 59 years. His funeral mass will be this Friday at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Manhattan Beach at 11:00 a.m. followed by burial at Holy Cross Cemetary. He was a great dad and loving husband.
Very sorry for the loss of your father and the loss of another long time Hawthorian, Tom. Our sincere condolences to you and your family.
