Message: Hey Loren, If you have Google Earth, you can see the sand dunes there. It's a free download on Google if you don't have it. It looks like a very small patch of dunes at the end of Imperial. Nothing at the end of El Segundo Bl. I am so amazed at the empty roads at the end of the runways at LAX. That was a really nice housing tract at one time. I remember parking on one of those lonely roads late at night and being visited by a friendly cop. That was after the houses were torn down and I was in high school or maybe just out. They couldn't leave houses under the traffic lanes when they expanded the airport. Those roads have been deserted for over 50 years.

Message: Ahh..Wrightwood. In Catholic school, our girl scout troup went there for 2 weeks from hell, (just my opinion) We lived in chalets and tents and didn't sleep all night listening to the animal calls and bugs crawl. I dropped my flash light in the hole in the ground latreen. (yes, you have that visual correct and all kids do it.) Forced to go on an overnight hike and fell off a horse. Broiling hot in the day - freezing cold at night. Got home-sick but mom wouldn't come get me.. (I'm sure she was enjoying my absence ) I tuffed it out but never forgave her. In defense of the place I will say that at night we'd all sing around the campfire and roast marshmallows and tell spooky stories which was a blast and I'll never forget the sky being unbelievably gorgeous every night... orange and pink.. and the saying that Johnny Appleseed's orchard was on fire. But that wasn't enough to make me ever sign up again. Just too brutal for me. I never go where the buffalo roam and there isn't a sound of a toilet flushing.

Message: Big Pines! I am sure I went there. I don't remember what year, maybe 1962 or so. I was attending RH Dana. Many years later, around 1980, I was surprised one day as I rode my motorcycle through Angeles National Forest, and there it was! I couldn't resist pulling in. The security guard there believed my story and showed me around. As I recall, the cabins had animal names, and mine was "Blue Jay". We had it so good! Thanks, John Baker, for the great memories!

Message: My dad and I took our walk today during the mall fire --very impressive turnout of fire trucks; policemen shutting off 120th, Birch, and a bit of Haw Bl; paramedic trucks; and guys on the roof running around. Smelled like an electric fire. The copters overhead were thunderous and my dad kept looking up to watch them while walking instead of the fire trucks hauling about. The building is still standing, and only a few walls appear to have been pulled down -- but they were walls on the bottom level of the garage, so let's hope for a nice shaker to take the rest of it down.

Message: Well, is the mall still there. I went on YouTube to see if there was any video. These days the minute something happens it ends up on YouTube. Nothing there however, they do have video footage of the 1966 tornado that we had.
Here is the link. Was working as an information operator at the Pac Bell next to Foster's then. I got a call from a woman in Hawthorne who said we had just had a tornado. I asked where she lived. When she told me I was shocked because it was just a few blocks from our office. As usual, I missed it. I miss everything WHAAA, WHAA, WHAA.

Message: Is this the same camp that we, as 6th graders, got to go to? At least I think it's the one that those of us who went to Eucalyptus Elementary, anyway, were able to have a week of fun at. I wonder how many Hawthorne "any schoolers" had to privelege of attending. It was my first time in the mountains (to stay overnight) in.

Message: I read Jim Sloey's tribute to the "DUKE" and couldn't help but remember back in OCT.4th 1955 my Dad took my brother John & myself to our very first Major League Baseball Game at EBBETS Field N.Y.. It just happened to be the 4th game of the World Series between The N.Y. Yankees & the Brooklyn Dodgers. The Duke hit two Homers in that game, & tied the series @ 2 games each. I will never forget that game. The DUKE was my childhood hero. I never knew until now that he was a Three Sport Star at COMPTON HIGH. The Dodgers WON that year in GAME 7. RIP "DUKE"

Message: Freeman & Imperial is the old hood. (118th & Freeman) Burger Place on one corner (was it a Tastee Freeze?) Where the afternoon paperboys used to fold and band their papers. OK Barber Shop with the large windows was on one corner. Was that in exotic Lennox? Snappy Market was built where once there was a home, and when the family first opened the market, they would sell booze to anybody. Being a soph in high school made me anybody, so I worked that place. The owners could barely communicate in English, and didn't seem to have any idea of liquor laws. Connie Reed, was a frosh who looked about 12, and bought wine (Red Mountain) there one evening. I also remember an A&W on the north side of Imperial between the Blvd. and Prairie somewhere. Memories fade like old Levis.

I'm sure glad we moved. I wouldn't have a high school around if I had graduated from Aviation. I still tease my sister about that. She is five years older than I am, and she started Aviation as a freshman the first year it opened.

There was a burger joint on the Southwest corner there but it was "Tastee-Freez". It is still there but is a taco joint now I think Snappys is right across the street.
