Message: All of the talk about the “A” reminds me of the time not that long ago, while returning from Yosemite Valley, my lady friend and I decided to make a detour through Modesto to see my dear Ol’ Granny. As we hit McHenry Ave coming into town, traffic ground to a halt. Once a month, “Car boys” (and probably girls, too) from all over the great “Central Valley” converged for what they called “Graffiti Night,” in deference to Modesto’s favored son, George Lucas. Moving at a rate of about 100 feet every 15 minutes, we arrived opposite one of the A & W’s in that town and beheld every parking spot occupied by vintage ’57 and ’58 Chevys and Nomads. Long after carhops on roller skates disappeared, they were out in force that night. I so wanted to be back in “dear old” Hawthorne.
“Take me back to the place where I first saw the light To the sweet sunny south take me home Where the mockingbirds sang me to rest ev'ry night Oh, why was I tempted to roam”
JB, can you map out all the old haunts for us please. The class of ’64 turns 64 reunion is shaping up to be great; see everyone in May.

Message: Oh my gosh...Bob Jensen just mentioned a place I had nearly forgotten all about. Latitude 20. I used to go there as often as my college budget would allow during my El Camino College days. I had made friends with a group of kids who were attending ECC at that time who were from Hawaii. They introduced me to my first Mai Tai there. I vaguely remember getting up on stage one evening giving my best attempt at the hula! And no - I had not had one to many - I just liked to dance. Those were some fun times!

Message: Clark; there were 3 A&W’s in the area that I remember. There was one on Redondo Beach Blvd. at Crenshaw (now a parking lot for El Camino). There was one on PCH just west of Hawthorne Blvd. (Walteria Park) across from Latitude 20 and the one in Hawthorne. I can not recall one in MHB.

Message: Cruising "The Boulevard"! Great memories! And the A&W was the "Place To Be" on a weekend night. I went to the website to see if maybe they had a list of past A&W drive-ins. I did not find that, but I do believe there is a pic of our A&W "back then". Take a look at the "1971" entry on the timeline. That is the
Hawthorne A&W, isn't it? Anyone recognize those cars?

Message: Oh Sidney...now you're right up my alley.. Ah Ha's was on Century just west of Crenshaw and across the street from the Century Theater. It was a Morningside/Inglewood hang out. Met a lot of cool people there that I still speak to and parties were on every block in the 60's. There was a 31 flavors on the side. Nancy Bausman was always there. All the boys use to pull in with the upside down car record players. (remember those ) I hope that Maureen Manning and Mary Plater are reading this. We all learned how to drink and smoke there..Ahh Haa!! A trip down memory lane. Thanks.

Message: Hey Shelley thanks for ratting on me. Remember back in the fifties when we would go to the movies for all day this or that? it might be all day westerns or all day comedies or all day Francis The Talking Mule movies. One Saturday I went to the Imperial with Brian White HHS'60, Mike Kendall Serra'61, Gordon Darnell HHS'63 and Lyn Acord HHS'63. They would hold a raffle (you got the ticket with your 75 cent admission) and halfway through the day the big prize came out, a brand new bicycle. My number was called (about the only time I ever won anything) and I just stood there. We all came on our bikes so I wondered how I was going to get two home and besides I would have to go on stage in front of all those kids. I shoved the ticket into my pocket and didn't say anything until we got home. I got ripped pretty good by the guys then and it seems over 50 years later I still have to take it. Also, Jake happy birthday, may the doo wop be with you.

Message: Came home about noon today tired cold wet and Debby says let's go get some lunch. Sounded like a good idea. We had never been to Cold Stone Tavern below the bridge on the San Marcos [the one that people are jumping off while they decide the aethetics of the design for a barrier] Pass so we headed there, about 12 minutes away. We walked pasT the tavern part heading to the restaurant part and the door opens and I swear [are you ready Baker because I am getting 2 sightings for this one] the guy walks out looks exactly like Henry Cooper. Right, I say no way too, after all we couldn't even hook up when we knew where we were going in Sonoma. I discard the notion and then bam, I ask. Are you Henry Cooper? It was. He and his wife Kathy were visiting friends in Carpinteria. Is that a coincidence or what. We had a great lunch. Henry could still play linebacker for the Cougs and we both agreed I could carry his jock. Henry what a pleasure it was to see you again and to meet your beautiful wife. And for all who asked, Henry is doing great!
