Message: John, I know what you mean about dry vs wet counties, etc. When I lived in El Paso in the 70's they had "blue Sunday". You could buy baby formula but not the bottle, if you needed a light bulb, forget it, you did without lights. It was terrible. Every Saturday night at 11:30 they'd bring out the blue tarps and cover the items you couldn't buy on Sunday. By the way, you could buy beer and wine but not the cups to drink it our of if you so desired.
Paco, Are we off the Hawthorne stories yet?

Message: Try to get a drink in Texas! Along the Red River and the OK border, there are counties with "wet" precincts within "dry"counties. To a Californian, remarkable!

Message: And, I can one-up my brother by saying that not only did I have to walk to Hawthorne Intermediate like he did (past all the bars on Hawthorne Blvd), but I had to carry a very heavy saxaphone, besides, once a week. That only lasted a year and is when I gave up playing the sax. I do wish a good year to come in 2011 to all you Cougs out there.
Happy New Year, Lee Ann

Message: I remember Alabama. I was assigned to Fort Rucker for flight training in Hueys and Chinooks. In 1969, Fort Rucker was surrounded by dry counties. Leaving post with booze in the car was bootlegging. If you were caught, off to jail! In Dale county, they used to check your trash cans on Monday morning for empty booze containers. Same punishment for that. If you wanted to drink off post, you had to risk taking the empties back on post to dispose of them.

Message: Not able to buy beer on Sunday's? How about not at all? While moving out here to Fla. we stopped in Alabama for the night, and I went to get some beer. After a couple of store's, I asked the clerk where the beer was and he told me the entire county was dry. What a bummer. Hey, Dennis Carden, You got bussed to Washington? I had to walk it and I lived only about 2 block's from you. Up hill both ways, by the way! Happy New Year, everybody.
Happy New Year Ern'

Message: I live in Tennessee, and the "Package" stores are closed on Sundays here as well. However, you can buy beer in the grocery stores. They really have a weird system here. You can only buy liquor and wine in the "Package" stores. No mixes, cocktail ingredients, or beer are sold there. You have to go to the grocery store for that. So, if you want to make a margarita, you have to go to the Package store for the tequila, and then go to the liquor store for the mix. A person shouldn't have to work that hard at having a good time!

Message: Serra High About blue laws. When I first moved to Phoenix in 1985 you could not buy booze before 12 noon on Sunday. Then the cardinals came to town and they changed the law so you could buy it at 10 am. Then tailgating started to get big so they changed it to 6 am. Funny how football changes laws.

Message: Massachusetts "Blue Laws"! When I first started driving interstate, I used to spend a lot of time on the East coast. I once pulled a load to Connecticut. I arrived on Sat. and didn't have to pick up until Mon. So I thought I would get some sleep and head out on Sunday to visit some relatives in Massachusetts. I was told by other drivers that I couldn't do that because it was illegal to drive a commercial vehicle on the roads of MA. on Sunday. Maybe not such a bad idea to preserve the peace at least one day a week. (And I'm not sure, but I think spitting on the sidewalk will still get you 8 hours in the stocks!).
Paco, seeeee.

Message: As for curfew times on booze. Well, I'm not one to drudge up sore subjects, but I happen to know first hand that in Hawaii/Maui, you can't buy rum after 10:00 pm. You're not allowed to stuff it down the side pockets of your baggie shorts......or strap it inside your belt and clang all the way out the Star Market on Maui... Just some useless information!! Thought I'd share. ( I think I read it somewhere )
My pants were NOT baggie! !

Message: Paco, that is interesting. I know when I was a little girl in Boston the package stores (THAT IS WHAT THEY CALLED LIQUOR STORES) were closed on Sundays. I thought they had abolished that law. I will have to e-mail my cousins and find out. I know my dad used to may sure he had beer in the house before Sunday rolled around. He was a good Catholic boy. lol Hope everyone had a MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Message: A traditional thing we like doing is traveling around our neighborhood watching the kids playing with their new toys. This year was different then the past. We only saw a couple of kids playing with new bicycles, even at houses we knew had kids. We chalked it up to technology. Instead of Hula hoops, roller skates, pogo sticks and bicycles there are video games, computers, cellular telephones and iPods. Has anyone else noticed this?
It's a sign of the techie times, Chris.
