Message: Does anyone have any news of Emitt Rhodes? Like the Beach Boys and Chris Montez, Emitt enjoyed considerable success in the music industry, and lived/lives on 132nd Street near Ramona. He turned the garage of the house into a one-man recording studio. Harry Shearer has been playing Emitt's music often lately on "Le Show" on KCRW.

Message: John, just got back to Texas after a great 60/61 class reunion and wanted to give a big thank you to Mary and Rich Sloan and all the other helpers for a great reunion, enjoyed seeing and talking with some that I had not seen in 50 years, it was good to see and talk with you, thank you for all you do at this site, it makes me feel like a little of me is still in Hawthorne.
Hey Howard, nice to talk with you too and glad you could make the reunion. Yes, I think we all have a little of our own Hawthorne left inside.

Message: Hi Clark; I have been in contact with HHS regarding Senior Square. This summer HHS had some major projects going on so the program for SS was put on hold for the class of 2011. I just spoke to Kimberlee last week trying to get an update. She assures me that something will come of this soon. I have dogged them so much they probably hate getting my emails by now but as you know "success requires determination". I promise as soon as I hear something I will put it out for all to read.
Hey Bob, thanks for taking the lead on this one, man. We'll be waiting.

Message: Hi JB, Would like to give a thanks to Rich and Mary Sloan and others involved in putting together the 50th reunion. It was a very nice event. I came home squealing like Ned Beatty in deliverance after gorging myself at the buffet. [it was delicious] oink oink. It was good to see our resident celebrity Al Jardin. Bob Fraser, Fred Ewing, myself and others. Had poker games with Al Jardin seated at the table when we were punks back then. After 50 years, we were blessed to be there to see some classmates, the coaches and Ron Arias, Dave Amour, Steve Kristof, Howard Treloar, Alan Hamlin, Royal Lord and several others. Thanks Paco for pictures and JB for Cougartown.
Hey John, Great to see you there too. Howard will have more pictures this week. Stay tuned.

Message: I finally spotted a fellow Cougar. I was showing my car at the La Verne car show yesterday and saw Dick Dixon, class of 63 and his wife. I'd never met Dick but I recognized him from his updated photo on Cougartown. We had a nice conversation about cars and he invited me look over the automotive department at Citrus college. He assures me an old dog like me could learn alot from the instructors in his department (I can use all the help I can get while I fix up my old Mopar). Thanks John, for C-town and the connections it helps all of us old Cougars make.
Thanks Steve for the Cougar Sighting.

Message: I couldn't help but notice some of the comments about the day JFK was assassinated. A great deal of people were understandably shocked by the news. What I would be more interested in is what lasting personal impact resulted from the event. End of innocence, etc. (as with Lee Ann e.g.) I'm probably somewhat curious because I don't recall the moment having any enduring effect on me personally. The 1963 World Series is a different story.
No lasting effects to anyone, Tom. Tearing down the Plaza was the end of the innocence.

Message: Well first of all I just wanted to say I hope everyone had a nice THANKSGIVING, mine was nice too. I have a friend who's grandson is in high school and going to RUHS, and the last couple of games at half time 3 streakers came out running through the field going through the Band that is very shameful. Jim even though I don't know your brother Louis I will keep all of you in my Prayers for a long time to come. When my family and I moved from New York, we lived in Lawndale and went to Billy Mitchell. I was playing tether ball, I saw some students running out of the classroom, so I decided to go inside and my teacher was sitting at the desk crying so I asked her what happened she said the President was shot. I sat in the desk in front of her for a minute, ran outside and told some students, and we ran back inside, and the Principal said we can all go home and be with our families. I walked home and saw my parents sitting in front of the T.V. in shock. Anyway after that we moved to Hawthorne and I also went to Hawthorne Intermediate. Still today some of my friends and I talked about that sad day. Well Christmas is coming fast I hope all of you are ready.

Message: 60/61 Reunion: A great big thanks to Mary and Richard Sloan along with their committee for putting on the best reunion ever. See, I gave Mary top billing, Richard's right hand. The night was great and a big thanks to Mr. Baker for Cougartown which keeps all us Cougars in close contact, also a great big thanks to Al Jardine for being there, it was truly great to just sit and talk about old times. Thanks again to all that showed up, it was better than great.
Hey Fitz, I agree totally and thanks for the Feedback.

Message: I was glad to see that Hal Chauncey, Dave Capelouto, and Duff Means made the 60-61 reunion. I get a chance to see Hal and Kathy once or twice a year, but I haven't seen Duff or Dave since I played college football. I was fortunate to have both of them officiate games I played while I was at Cal State LA in '73 and '74. We had some pretty entertaining conversations during those games after they called penalties on me..... Oh, and a Cougar sighting.... two weeks ago I saw Jan Chauncey Norton and her hubby at an El Segundo eatery, and we had breakfast together and caught up..... cheers.....
Hey Mike, Thanks for the Cougar sighting.

Message: I would like to thank those who came to my defense. And for setting the record straight on Pres Nixon. There is no animosity felt by me whatsoever about what happened. People often say things (and, in this case, it was only said by a couple of people) that they wish they never said. It was a very emotional day and it's just human nature, that's all.
Anyone go to the Chris Montez concert last Friday or to the 60-61 Reunion? If so, please give us your thoughts.

Message: Lee Ann Nixon's experience was shameful. But to set the historical record straight, Richard Nixon greatly admired Jack Kennedy and they were friends while serving in Congress together. The Nixons were invited to Jack and Jacqeline's wedding. As far as Nixon was concerned, they were friends even after the 1960 election. Also, Jacqueline Kennedy and her children made their first visit to the White House since 1963 at the invitation of Richard and Pat Nixon (John Jr. accidently spilled milk on the president's lap during lunch). When John Jr. passed the bar exam, he received a congratulatory letter from Nixon, which he said would be the one thing he'd save if his house caught fire. It meant that much to him.

Message: I find it rather fascinating that since Cougartown came up on the internet and all the talk about our High School, there are now shows on television named "Cougartown" and "Hawthorne." If John Baker hasn't heard from the producers of those shows perhaps he should. Why? Well, there must be a connection somewhere, somehow don't you think? On the other side of my thoughts are these: A VERY WARM AND WONDERFUL THANKSGIVING DAY TO YOU ALL!!
Thanks Jim and I have nothing to do with those shows Have a Happy Thanksgiving yourself.

Message: Mrs. Marks' English class was in session. Two female students walking by screamed out, "President Kennedy has been shot!" It was a moment of disbelief and shock. We were sent home. As we exited the classroom, other classrooms followed suit. Students and teachers were fearing the worst, and certainly the days that followed will forever be etched in our minds as though it had just occurred. Lee Ann, anyone attempting to dishonour your standing could never succeed, because your composure, wit, personality and behaviour at HHS exemplified and epitomized the true image of a dedicated student, as witnessed by all.

Message: It's with a sad and heavy heart that I post the passing last night of a fellow Haytowner, Cougar and good friend for many years, Hawthorne's own 6' 6" gentle giant, Darryl Hockenberry c/o 64. He was well known for his involvement in Aviation Little League as a coach and manager teaching many young boys (including two of mine) not only how to play baseball and the rules of the game but teamwork and sportsmanship. Several years ago he moved to Scotts Mills Oregon where he became not only a civic leader and City Councilman but a respected coach and manager in the girls softball league and in 2000 was nominated by one of his players to "Who's Who Among Americas Teachers" for influencing their life in a positive way. He truly loved helping and teaching young people. He is survived by his wife Raleen, a daughter and two granddaughters.
Very sad to lose our Cougars, Jerry. Our condolences to the Hockenberry family and thanks for the information.

Message: To respond to Jill (McFarlane's) comment and to add to her history info. I was at school, between classes and near a bench. Sat down when I heard about Kennedy's death, in total shock. Interestingly, because of my last name, one or two fellow classmates made derogatory remarks about me because of my last name. My sister, Susie (class of '66) had the same experience that day. Because we are related to Richard Nixon, those comments made us feel especially bad. I don't think anyone knew that about us at the time. Of course, kids are kids and it was just a gut reaction on their part. It's understandable. President Kennedy's assassination was a truly heart-wrenching experience for us all.
