Message: Some thoughts on Gary Bickers entries from yesterday. Glad to see Gary has such good taste coming here to see C&K. They are great. I am a little upset at Bill Schultz though. Went to football games with him on Thursday and Friday night and he didn't say a thing about the concert. Second, I don't know what I would wear if there weren't Hawaiian shirts (good or bad!) Finally, the Adams brothers were the best baseball family I ever saw. Never could get a hit off of Joe or Tony in Hawthorne Middle League. Although Tony did walk me once. I think he picked me off of first to make up for it.

Message: I am very sad to learn of Bob Stelse's passing. He was always so sweet to me in high school. He used to jokingly tease Lyn Biggers, Cathy Moore, and myself (the Three Musketeers). Where there was one of us the others had to be somewhere close by. lol He was really good to us. He was very nice and kind hearted person. Although I have not seen him since high school, he will always be a part of my HHS memories. I really liked Bob. Dale, you and your family are in my prayers. Rest in peace, Bob.

Message: I will always remember how Bob was a tough guy on the outside, but when we would talk about losing his classmates and friends he would get very emotional. Then he would say "Dale, that's going to be us some day". Bob really wished people could live forever, he so much enjoyed to BS and liked his many friends but he was a bit opinionated at times. Everyone always knew who he was and when we were in school and anyone found out who I was they ALWAYS said "oh, so you are Bob's brother". Bob Stelse, thanks for the memories, REST IN PEACE HHS 1966 and he was proud of it..

Message: John, it is my week; I just saw the Leuzinger pictures. Reminded me of Leuzinger High and probably the most famous family, the Adams family. The father, Joe Sr was heavily involved in Hawthorne youth baseball. Belle, ran the hhs cafateria for years. I am sure a lot of us ate for free because of Belle. Joe jr, maybe the most dominent youth baseball player of our time (ask Paco). Played quarterback for their losing team to our great '59 team. Tony, battled HHS for four years in football and baseball. Mykkanen beat into a pulp and he cried every time. Bobby, the least of the family, the youngest of the family, died in his country's service over 35 years ago. He was 19 years old. A great family and if they lived in Hawthorne, one more street over, they would be all over these pages.

Message: John, Hawaiian shirt; but first the new log in, at my age I could not keep up. Very nice improvement. So I saw a lot of bad hawaiian shirts on Sunday. I started to think the worst Hawaiian shirts, which by the way are the male mumu, I've seen. 1) I saw a couple in Hawaii wearing matching shirts with two Hawaiians walking behind a plow in Iowa. 2) I saw a guy with a shirt with Charles Manson with flowers around his neck. I am sure there are worse.

Message: Dear HHS Friends: Don Brokaw has been battling cancer and has recently found out there is no cure. He lives in Boise, ID but made the trip to California to see as many people as possible. I was invited and spent the evening with Don, and his family. It was a lively party that left no room for sadness and his family were wonderful hosts. I was there tho, to see Don. I was relieved to see that he looks good and is cheerful. Yes, I grilled him a bit about the specifics of his illness and he admits that on the inside he is feeling pretty sick but can maintain an outwardly good/normal manner up to a point. Time is not on his side and it breaks my heart in half. His family is sending Don and his wife to Hawaii to cruise each island next month. I found that so touching. By 10:30 p.m. I could tell he was tired so it was time for me to go too. The bottom line is that Don is taking advantage of the time he has left to see as many people as possible. He has three beautiful daughters and grandkids! If you would like to write to Don, please send me an email and I will get you his address. He only does "snail mail"!! Love to all, Tesa

Message: The article about A&W brings back many memories. As I said before, I worked there for three years. I remember Frank Hedge Sr. well, he would visit us once or twice a week. He told me a couple of things he had to do to keep the city happy. If anybody remembers the A&W Root Beer Special A Fuel dragster, Frank Jr. ran it. I remember the time he had four blowers laid out on the back parking lot, getting them ready to race. The place was like a car show every day. Thanks for sharing that article.

It is the A & W on Hawthorne blvd, there are a few cars and a truck of the 50's. Seeing this brought some good memories back for us. I found this at a little store at Los Angeles Farmers Market. We'll bring it to the next Cruise Nite. ALWAYS A COUG

Message: When I was down in August for Cruise Night, the day before I drove by HHS and noticed the bars were indeed coming down. I pulled into the parking lot, got out and started walking around with camera in hand. Met Mark Newell (principal) in the process who was gracious enough to walk me around campus. Some things were still as I remembered them some 41 years ago...and some things obviously had changed. It was strange seeing the empty spaces where all of our lockers used to be. The color of the school was green in 1969 as well but here's a thought...the majority of the buildings were and still are constructed of brick. Natural brick or even used brick for that matter is beautiful. Wonder who it was that decided this beautiful brick should be painted? Some things you can go back home to but not in this case.

Message: Hey, John Boy; I had a relative who worked at Hughes A/C. His story & theory of the abundance of green paint on most of the buildings of that day in Hawthorne & El Segundo. There was a lot of this green paint left over after WWII & Korea. Subsequently the feds. or whoever had it (paint), gave it or sold this paint very cheaply to fledgling communities, as there was no easy or cheap way for them to dispose of it. I guess they finally ran out of this surplus paint and the colors started changing. Hey, it's a hear say story/theory, but it's possible LOL. Jorge
