Message: Happy Belated Summer Solstice to all the Cougar Family. I was reading the post by Bob Jensen regarding Senior Square and it brought to mind memories of the DAIA (Del Air Improvement Association) Community Building. I wonder how many remember the “Log Cabin” on Aviation Blvd. near 119th? My parents were part of the group that erected that building and help to keep it up. Of course they were not alone and many families in the area contributed a lot of time and sweat to keep that place usable for meetings, rallies, and of course parties. I remember with fondness the 10 cent Coke machine near the front door that dispensed Coke so cold that there was often ice in it when one opened it. I also remember that the building’s office always had that “Ditto Machine” smell. How many of you all remember that smell from the tests we were handed at HHS? Many yearly Christmas parties were held there for the children in the surrounding area for free. They also had dances for the older kids and I remember seeing photos of adults in costume from past Halloween Parties. (Those photos are somewhere in my father’s box of memorabilia.) The point of this is that more volunteer time was put into that place than dollars. Business people in the area donated material from time to time but it was the sheer involvement of the surrounding community that kept that place going until the 105 freeway forced so many DAIA members to move away. In the end the building was sold but some of the money from that sale was donated by some of the members to establish a scholarship at Pepperdine College. That idea to give to the community that was established by so many from the “Greatest Generation” lives on. I wonder if Cougar volunteers will donate time to rebuild Senior Square? I for one want to know more so Bob Jensen, keep me/us updated please.

Message: Hey John and Gary, it's just not in Tonga but Tahiti and Fiji as well that they like to party. I was in Nadi, Fiji last January on business when sitting on a little tour bus the driver put on his little boom box. No, we weren’t listening to Fijian music but a music station that featured the 60’s and 70’s. About four songs along, “Wouldn't It Be Nice" came on. My group noticed my happiness in hearing the song and nearly couldn’t wait to tell everybody about our high school and the Beach Boys. Our driver went on to say how popular the Beach Boys were in Fiji with the locals and had also heard the same thing in Tahiti. The Beach Boys have meant so very much too many of us and many around the world.

Message: Greeting to all Cougars, past and present! As you know, there is a group of us that have been working with the current graduating class and HHS staff to reestablish Senior Square. There have been some budget issues and some logistic issues that have hindered us this year. The class of 2010 has graduated but the project is still going to happen but not until next year. I have attached a note from Kimberlee Stack, Activities Director and ASB advisor, that I received this morning explaining the current status. I want to thank all of you that have emailed me expressing your interest and your willingness to help. I’ll keep you posted.
Hi Bob, I was waiting for these students to get me the computer models and they fell through. I still have the original drawing though and it is in my to do folder. As I’m sure you can understand, things have been hectic here as we have worked to close out the school year. Unfortunately we were not able to truly get this project underway this year. The good news however is that the original idea I had for the project was much smaller in scale than I believe will actually unfold. Lets regroup next year after the irrigation project is complete and we know what type of space we are dealing with and we will try to get the ball rolling next year. I will also have a new group of Engineering students next year who can produce a computer sketch for us. Thank you for your continued interest and willingness to help. I will be here in the same position next year and I assure you I will not let the issue drop. Kimberlee Stack, Hawthorne High School Activities Director

Message: Well, I agree Jim - a 50th Anniversary/Beach Boy Reunion would really be something but I am left wondering exactly who was it that started this rumor? Was it the reporter Robin Leach from the Las Vegas Sun or Mike Love? Any which way here is the statement from the official website of Brian Wilson...Jun 22, 2010 Statement on the Beach Boys 50th Anniversary As The Beach Boys approach 2011-2012 touring season, which will mark their 50th anniversary as a band, speculation continues to grow among fans and media as to reunion possibilities among all the original surviving members. In response to recent stories Mike Love had the following comments: "The Beach Boys continue to tour approximately 150 shows a year in multiple countries. At this time there are no plans for my cousin Brian to rejoin the tour. He has new solo projects on the horizon and I wish him love and success. We have had some discussions of writing and possibly recording together, but nothing has been planned. I, as I¹m sure he is, am proud and honored that The Beach Boys music has endured these 50 years, but felt the need to clarify that there are no current 'reunion' tour plans."

Message: Happy belated Fathers Day to all COUGAR dads. LaVerne and I got back last night from a weekend at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma for NASCAR. I don't know who keeps up with NASCAR but the top three finishers were from SoCal. Jimmy Johnson (El Cajon), Robby Gordon (Bellflower) and Kevin Harvick (Bakersfield). Jeff Gordon (Vallejo) finished 5th and Boris Said (Carlsbad) finished 8th. Marcos Ambrose, from the land down under, who led the race on the last 2 laps, was told to shut down the engine under caution to save fuel but failed to get it restarted as he coasted up the hill between turns 1 and 2. NASCAR gave him the black flag to reposition him into 7th spot which put Jimmy in 1st. Have a great COUGAR week!
