Message: Wow did I get some good news today. Sorry to bore all you good folks but tracing my family lineage to me there has not been a girl born since 1908. As you may remember, last fall we had 4 grandsons produced by 3 of our 5 sons including a set of twins. Today Nick and his wife Cecilia announced their October baby is going to be a girl. Everyone is doing great and Debby and I am getting a grand daughter, WOW! And congratulations to Grandma Judi Storie who finally gets a girl.

Message: Many of you older gentlemen of Cougartown probably knew Lynn Knauss. He was my ex-husband and dear friend, and was currently married to Kathleen, both of Leuzinger. Lynn finally succumbed to the rigors of cancer on Saturday, May 16, 2010. His heart was so scarred from all the cobalt he endured when he was 27/28 during his first bout with cancer, they couldn't fix it and that is what actually caused his demise. His big ol' heart just gave out on him. However, the cancer had been advancing for the last 2 or 3 years. He had suffered many surgeries and continued chemo until it wouldn't work any more. I am sure you "old football players" and "old baseball players" will remember him as an outstanding athlete and fierce competitor who had an outstanding sense of humor and tremendous love for his fellow man. He was a good human being and will be sorely missed. doris

Message: Went to my husbands 35th HS reunion this last weekend. It wasn't as much fun as ours, but it did inspire me to recruit some alumni for the class of 77 35th reunion, which will be here in 2 short years. I'm picturing something casual. Maybe we can combine some classes? Anyway, I don't want to be in charge, but I will help organize. If anyone is interested, please contact me at my email. JB, hope you had a great vacation. Remember, June is dues month for Cougartown, I will have mine to you shortly, JB.

Message: I read something about Kelly Carden. I worked for Kelly for about a year or so painting houses and building. We worked on an apartment building in Torrance owned by Lee Marvin. I think I painted a few other places with him. His brother Ric was my baseball coach for 3 years along with Pat Mack, Terry Mack and Ron Treat. We had the coolest and best coaches.

Message: John, I never related this story here before, it may be too wordy so edit as you see fit. I hope it answers a question about Kelly that I see posted in past Feedback pages. E.L. Earlier this decade I decided to take a second job as a substitute teacher for the local school district in Rosamond, California. The end of my first day I was offered the job of long term substitute at the high school for a teacher that was going on maternity leave. One of my tasks was after school in thelibrary/computer room over seeing a computer directed class where students work at their own pace to make up for poor grades in various subjects. I carried a role of over thirty students but at any given time only about ten to fifteen would be present. A group of about seven to ten students were regulars but many I carried on my role sheets were never present. The latter students got an F grade when I turned in my grades at the end of the first quarter. The result was that beginning the second quarter, more wayward students arrived to class. One of these students was named Kelly Carden. I will always remember my meeting him. This was mostly because I went to high school with a guy named Kelly Carden(1969). This kid bore no resemblance to my former schoolmate. My schoolmate was thin, red headed, pale skinned and tall. My student was almost opposite in all ways. He was average height, a bit on the husky side, olive skinned, dark brown hair and brown eyes. I informed him of the rules of conduct in the class and set him up with his subject matter in the computer. He soon showed great drive and self motivation. Even though he was one quarter of the school year behind the other students, his regular attendance, strong work ethic and focus on task allowed him to soon close the gap between his work load and that of his classmates. I was impressed with this kid and he made an impression if for no other reason than his scholastic ability. One day weeks into the new quarter, I was walking around the classroom keeping the idle chatter down when I overheard this Kelly kid say the word Hawthorne. I walked over and inquired as to what he was talking to his classmate about when he mentioned Hawthorne again. I said I lived in Hawthorne and went to Hawthorne High. He faced me and asked when I graduated. My reply of 1970 was quickly followed by the remark from him, “my dad went to Hawthorne High too, his name was Kelly Carden, did you know him?” I answered that I did remember his father. The words that he spoke next were those that hit me like a chilling hand gripping my spine, he said, “Would you tell me about him? He died a few months before I was born.” It was one of those moments in ones life that touches the heart and burns a memory into one’s soul. I was moved. Even telling the story years later, I get chills up my spine and a tear wells up. My response was that though I didn’t hang out with his father I did know a bit about him as a schoolmate. I mentioned that he was pretty wild and I was not sure that his mother would want me telling some of what I knew. I did tell him what little I did know about his father at a later date. I later learned that his father, my schoolmate, had passed from cancer. Moments like the one I describe don’t happen very often to educators, especially when they relocate so far from the place they grew up and went to school. I never kept track of this young man. Less than two years later I had relinquished my employment with that school district and moved on. I have to believe that with the tenacity and character he showed me he must be a successful adult today. This experience is a blessing and still brings fond memories.

Message: Hi John, I have not been over to visit here at Cougartown in such a long time. Lots going on health wise so it's been a little crazy. As you may remember, my husband attended Hawthorne High as did my son-in-law. I am sad to say, my husbands mother passed away in January of this year. She still lived on 137th Place near Oceangate. We have decided to buy her home (buy out the siblings) as we have rented for ages in Redondo Beach. I was curious if any Cougars still live in the area or have family still over in Hawthorne. I guess I got spoiled living in Redondo Beach BUT we will be moving into a 4 bedroom home - 2 full baths - 1856 sq ft and I just love the house as does my husband. I know there are areas that are not that great in Hawthorne but is there anything we should be aware of? I would appreciate any input.

Message: Okay folks everything is set for the dinner/get together at Diablos Restaurant at the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino in Las Vegas starting at 5pm till whenever on Friday June 11. We have well over 50 people who have contacted us and said they were coming. We are hoping everyone shows up. When you have made your hotel reservations email me so I can put your name on the website so people know you are attending. Cost is $70 at Diablos which we will collect that night or you can pay online on our website at www.cougarreunion.com. Includes dinner and dessert and whatever else we can get. I will have the menu up on the website later this week. A portion of the fee will go to The Sunshine Kids an organization started by HHS alumni Faelin Klein. This is an informal dinner so no need to dress fancy. It appears most everyone is staying the weekend so be sure to hookup with your friends and plan to have some fun while in Vegas. And don't forget what happens during this weekend will be our little secret.

Message: I'm sitting here trying to pull together all of the details for the upcoming Wine Country Weekend. If you are planning to attend, but haven't replied to the Questionnaire on the WCW sidebar, please complete it soon. That will help me plan for the food, transportation and events. I really think it will be a fun weekend. The reception at Homewood Winery is being moved to Friday evening with the hope that more Cougartowners will be able to attend. If enough people are interested, we can also move the Lagunitas microbrewery tour to Thursday night after the cheese making tour. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone in Sonoma the first weekend in June. They have a beer garden with great food.

Message: Sharon needs a prescription for those sunglasses. The porn occured subsequent to the prom, or at least that's my understanding. My guess is that most parents were looking for a single hair out of place after their daughters returned home for the evening, so I'm making an inference that there was less of the former occurring after the latter.
