Message: The two burger joints I remember with relish (pun intended) were both located in Inglewood and both were on Manchester Ave. The first was Yum Burger. Their burgers were great and so were their donuts. The second was a drive-in called Scotty's. It was on the north side of the street near the 5th Avenue and Academy Theaters (maybe a bit closer to Van Ness Ave.). Speaking of food and Ingelwood, there was a great Mexican restaurant near J. C. Penney's west entrance (maybe a door or two away). They had the best bleu cheese salad dressing.

Message: While having a burger with the team on Saturday, we were all talking about who made the best one. In the early 60's, I worked in Inglewood before transferring to Balboa, we would eat lunch at this hamburger joint on La Brea, north of Manchester and on the west side of the street. They opened another place in Hawthorne on Hawthorne Blvd north of Rosecrans on the west side of the street..It didn't last long. They had by far the best I've ever eaten, dark and kinda gloomy inside. You were given a lazy susan with everything you'd ever want except Alka Seltzer. Does anyone remember the name?

Message: Thanks to Cousin Larry Bach ('72) and childhood friend Betty Rodriguez (Kean - '69) for your postings on Cougartown abut my mom's passing. I enjoyed seeing friends and family at cousin Jamie's in Torrance yesterday and sharing memories about the old days in Hawthorne, and on Sundale Ave. And special thanks to the Arias family - Livy, Linda, Gilbert, and as always, Lou, for your thoughts and beautiful flowers. My mom would be so pleased. My mom, though born in Ohio, lived most (she took a three year hiatus in Hawaii from 1969-1973) of her life in Hawthorne, from the time her parents brought her as an infant from Cleveland, until I moved her to New York City in 2009 to be closer to me and my family out there. She volunteered at Hawthorne Hospital, mostly in ER, and was active in the ladies' club, Monday Eves, which helped in organizing and fundraising for the annual fair, among other community events.

But the idea is there. This is a multi-class reunion open to everyone who went to HHS. Many of you have been emailing Ron Coleman. It is best to email me your confirmation. We really want this to be a big party for everyone. Las Vegas is the perfect place. You will reunite with old friends and for sure make new ones. Anybody who wants to help please email me. I have no idea what to do except the website stuff. I am trying to get some funs things confirmed. The party on Friday night will be a whole lot of fun. How can it not be...it is Vegas!!!
Here is the website. It is not done yet but I am working on it when I have the time. As things are confirmed they will be posted. Lets get some teachers there too!

Message: Now that my UCLA Bruins have been eliminated from any March Madness excitement, I need something to keep me out of trouble before I head to Phoenix to catch a few spring training games later this month. Any word on the OC Cougars first annual get together? By putting my two favorite sports in the same paragragh, I just had a Hawthorne Intermediate flashback. Who remembers Mr. Dubas? He was the "cool" 8th grade teacher. He drove a carload of us to a Dodger game. I don't remember much about the game, but I do remember the drive to the game sitting "cheek-to-cheek" next to the hottest girl in class. Mr. Dubas was also a college women's basketball ref and I saw him occasionally officiating games at Pauley Pavillion. Anyone know what happened to him?

Message: Larry, So sorry for the loss your family has had. Bette also worked at Ivy's on El Segundo & Hawthorne Blvd. She and her whole family were special in my childhood. I can see her now, sitting on the couch, legs tucked under her, with a smoke in her hand, talking on the phone. Those starched white Van Heusen shirts and capri pants - stylish! She looked like Liz Taylor to me, and I was in awe. I'll miss her, but have all those memories.

Message: My aunt, Bette Matteson, passed away Saturday morning, March 6, from congestive heart failure. She was 82. Her three children, Cindi, Lynn, and Don all attended Hawthorne High. Bette lived in Hawthorne most of her life, attending Leuzinger High School. For the last year and a half Aunt Bette lived Brooklyn since it was easier for my cousin Don to provide for her care. She worked as a waitress at Bob's Big Boy on Century and Hawthorne Blvd, Holly's as well as Denny's on Hawthorne blvd, and Bitsy's on Inglewood Avenue, if you remember that joint. If you lived on Sundale Avenue in the '50's and '60's you likely knew my Aunt Bette. She'll be missed.
