Message: Hello Cougars; Long time since I've posted anything, guess I didn't have anything interesting to say. When I was in the 7th grade (1955)I sort of took a year off from Hawthorne Intermediate. I didn't apply myself to anything but getting into trouble and I did plenty of that. My Mom got real even with me by making me attend St. Josephs for the eighth grade. Talk about an attitude change, I had to do about three years worth of catching up just to get even with the slower people in Sister Edwards eighth grade class. I never worked so hard in my life. I did meet some great kids there though, like Jim (Vince) Schiavi, Mike McGarry, Carlos Hermicillo, Janet Lucero, Jim Claremont, Joan Mc Kindly, Lee Parker and ( best of all) a terrific 7th grader that is still one of my very best friends and one of the toughest people on the planet. Happy Birthday Tom Shelley, I love you too.
Hey Mike, Ran into Tom and had breakfast with him at a local place in old Torrance on Sunday. HEY, that IS a Cougar Sighting!!

Message: Keith is almost 100% correct. However, it is possible to register in one class and still be able to stop someone using a mark in another class if that other use creates an unacceptable risk of confusion. [Insert technical discussion here].

Message: We have a few lawyers on here but I am pretty sure John has no worries about the name Cougartown. Even if he trademarks it. It means nothing to trademark unless you register it in all the classes you intend to use. You could own Nissan for cars but that doesn't prevent anyone from opening a gym called Nissan. Just make sure their logo is nothing like ours.

Message: John; Remember Clayton Moore, who played the Lone Ranger. When the movie came out in the mid 80's, the movie studio went to court and got the sole rights to the name ?Lone Ranger? and Clayton Moore could no longer wear the mask, he made famous during his Hi Hoe silver days. You might want to take Alan Nelson's thoughts about the ?Cougartown? name. I would hate to see you and all of the c-towners take it up the backside because of a show. Unless of course, they pay you a million bucks and pay you a monthly fee to run ?Cougartown?.
Thanks for the concern, Pat. Clayton Moore didn't own the rights to the name "Lone Ranger". I own the rights to the domain, Cougartown.com, and have for 10 years. I really don't see a problem here.

Message: Seems to me John, that if that show takes off, you stand to make some serious coin selling them the domain. I know it's like one of your kids, molded and nurtured for these past 12 years or so. But heck, money talks, Right?
Haven't really thought about it, Alan. I may need a lawyer.

Message: Just a note to those who have worked hard to keep HHS athletics going...I was at Narbonne's last home girls volleyball game on Tuesday, which ran a little late. (My Gaucho daughter, who has been the starting setter is out for the season with an ankle injury - boo hoo). Into the gym start trickling some boys high school basketball teams, like Cathedral and West Torrance. Out of the corner of my eye, I started seeing Scarlet and Gold!! Yes, the HHS team was there, Cougar paws on their shorts. It was very, very good to see them. Now we just have to hope Gov. Ahnuld doesn't decimate the sports programs at all the schools with this next round of budgeting.
Thanks Connie....

Message: Re: "Cougar Town", I was wondering a few things: 1.) Have the producers of the show approached you on buying the site name? 2.) Do you think there might be a legal battle over the domain name if the show becomes a hit? (Personally, I think they'd lose since this site's been here for years.) 3.) Do you think we may get traffic from people Googling "Cougar Town"? 4.) Did you trademark "Cougartown"?

Message: My computer has been down a while so really behind on my Cougartown reading. I was reading the comments from Gary Bickers about the 1953 football team. They were the inspiration for the great school spirit we had then. They made it so much fun going to the games. Also the recollections from the ol Coach. The one about the faked pass that was so good it fooled the ref. I was there and never forgot that play. We have talked about that one for many years. Great memories.
Hi Marilyn, We'll have pictures and videos real soon of the 53 football reunion. Stay tuned....

Message: Can you picture sitting four abreast in a 1959 Chev El Camino 348 4 speed, Black in color, no seat belts in use, racing another vehicle, shutting down at 100+. The driver of that Chev was going with the old sister of Jerry Hopkins HHS 59'. Think her name was Lois. The other thing, that same driver can tell you how many cans of Country Club will fit in the bed of that El Camino, iced, and will that ice melt before you get to Bass Lake.

Message: Just returned from working the Fall Festival at my elementary school and I can't help it...I'm a dork and love these kinds of things because it reminds me of growing up in Hawthorne and going to the Halloween carnival at Eucalyptus every year. I remember the fishing booth, palm reader, making iron on t-shirts, the cafeteria being turned into a haunted house...it was great fun! Watching all the families and kids hanging out, eating hotdogs and having fun just brings back so many great childhood memories.
Missed that at Hawthorne Christian..... We cut pumpkins out of orange construction paper with blunt nosed scissors. With flour and water, glued them onto black construction paper, wrote Happy Halloween on them with a black crayola, and gave them to our parents. Wippee!!

Message: Hi John. I just wanted to say how nice it was at the breakfast and how great it was to see some old friends. I was wondering if you were going to post the pictures that were taken? I was sad to see Senior square gone. I know it's been gone for a long time and hopefully will come back. Who remembers their first day as Seniors and walking into Senior square for the first time. It was a great feeling. I also just wanted to say to Kathy, "I am sorry I missed the ladies luncheon but would like to make the next one".
Hi Shirley, Well it was just great seeing you and your sis on Saturday too. The pictures didn't really come out too great but maybe Paco has a good group shot he'll send in. Thanks again and hope to see you and more of our class at the next Cruise Night in February or March.

Message: I attended Eucalyptus Elementary school until 1968 when we moved back to Tennessee. I was just told about this site by a new friend from myspace who coincidentally was friends(later on) with 3 of my dearest friends from my days at elementary school...talk about wow! I remember Saveria Vandergalen (SeeVee), Tracy Flynn, and Mike Sims. I remember what a great time I had at Eucalyptus and the great friends in that idyllic era. I remember a teacher, Mrs Countryman in the 3rd grade, who probably had the biggest impact on me than any other teacher in my life. I remember running free from daylight to dusk during the summer in Hawthorne, and the Eucalyptus Park. I remember spending all day saturdays at the Plaza movie theater, where we would see all the scary monster movies. Leaving Hawthorne almost killed me, lol. I HATED to go, but eventually got used to the country life in Tennessee. I think I exchanged a few letters with Tracy and SeeVee, but soon lost touch. I imagine, had I stayed there, I would have attended Hawthorne High and would have been a 1973 alumni. If anyone remembers me or any of the people I mentioned please write to me. I continued school of course, in the Chattanoga area of Tennessee, then after HS, went into the USAF where I traveled the world for 20 years, then retired to the Nashville, Tennessee area, where I now live!
Hi John, Thanks very much for the Feedback and I'm sure someone here will remember you or your friends. If anyone does remember, please reply here. Thanks again...

I had not seen him since he moved from Hawthorne to Yorba Linda in 1962, at the end of his sophomore year. Thank you both. It truly is the thing that makes Cougartown the most amazing alumni website in the world.
