Message: We too had a great time at Coach's luncheon . Thank you , Gary for setting it up and letting us be a part of it . It does not not matter if you played sports or not, it was truly evident what an impact coach had on so many lives and how loved and respected he is. What a treasure. Just a side note to Judy-Wudy Degrazia-Blomsterberg- Dan and Ann Dye were there and Ann was very gracious in allowing Dan to give out some friendly hugs and kisses! ( Just to the ladies of which I think I may have gotten more than one hug and kiss) Anyway, we loved seeing old and new Cougar friends.
Judy Wudy....you missed out.

Message: Just a few things about the lunch yesterday. First as we all suspected coach spoke for about 15-20 minutes and while some of the names failed him, the detailed stories were remarkable. We had late '50 to mid '70 folks. I won't swear to it but I think the ladies had more fun than the guys. It takes a lot to get some of these guys up to speak but out of respect for coach they did. I asked Cathy how many times she had heard all these stories and she just rolled her eyes. There is a room available that seats 100; we told coach if he would come back we would fill it up. Fun.
Great job Gary, let's do this again next year.

Message: It was an excellent luncheon yesterday with coach Chauncey and his wife Cathy. Kudos to Gary Bickers for managing the event which was fun for everyone. I was the youngest HHS grad in the room with the bulk being guys who played for the ol coach in the late fifties/early sixties. Gary had some great stories to tell about his conversations with the coach during high school and Dan Dye and others contributed good memories. I knew Hal when he ran parks and rec for the city. I wish I was a generation older and played with this great bunch of guys. My highlight was meeting Ron Petch who is the only other Cougar who won a CIF game with a field goal. Ron kicked his in 1959 at El Camino stadium versus Glendale whereas mine came 15 years later in '74 against Loyola on Halcap. A great luncheon a good time and a great bunch of Cougars!
I agree Clark, a fun afternoon with a bunch of fun people. Thanks to Gary for getting this group together. Thanks to the Ol' Coach and Cathy for being there and to Rich Sloan for taking pictures and chauffering our honored guests. This group of Cougars is very special.

Message: What a great Hawthorne opportunity we had the other night. Friday night several of us old HHS alumni gathered at the Pizza Show, a hawthorne icon. What a wonderful time we had; reminiscing the old days and old times. The Pizza Show opened in about 1956 and has been going strong ever since. When the present owner, Gary, heard that some of us remembered "Frenchy" who worked there in the early 60's, he came over to the table and shared a few old stories of his own. Gary said that he had actually been trained be "Frenchie" and remembered him well. Standing outside afterwards, it was pointed out that another of our old haunts was right across the street. Frosties, (which is now another business) was THE place to be on a Friday or Saturday night in the 50's and 60's. I know we shouldn't spend our life living in the past. But it is nice to know that there are still places we can go to relive good memories. And BTW, the Pizza Show still makes the best pizza I have ever had.
Great time on Friday with you all. Thanks to all who were there including Ray's son, Kevin, behind the camera.

Message: Happy Birthday Mike, who also was a great surfer and had a wonderful Woodie. Yes, Janet, Fred was down at the beach with us a lot, except when he was working - and unlike us, he actually had a job and worked! I remember Fred's 57 Chevy Bel Air convertible, which he traded for a '56 Nomad. Then, when he tired of that, he found his original Chevy Bel Air on a car lot and bought it back, if I recall correctly.

Message: Happy Birthday to Norm Steiner, my best friend since 2nd grade, arguably the best surfer to come out of Hawthorne HS and the 26th Street beach scene. While his goofy-footed surfing style may not have been the most graceful, he sure knew how to drive. And just watching him drop into a wave was pure pleasure! We've stayed close friends all these years and had many great times and adventures, memories we now treasure. Love ya man!
Happy Birthday Norm ! !

Message: Just got back from a trip to old Haytown for the 4rth o July. Great time hangin out with some old friends. Wild fireworks show. Good old LA county--did some touring around WOW All the changes since weve moved 1997. Anybody check out Jefferson Blvd. in the area where the Hughes Helicopter aircraft facility used to be. Huge condo complexes on both sides of the street--like driving through a tunnel. Kinda reminds me of the movie Blade Runner. No more open space. Had a good time in Socal. Good to see that the Beach Boys Memorial is alive and well. In tribute to all of the Beach Boys I fried up my Bridgestones on my 2005 Dodge Hemi Magnum wagon. Lots of smoke and two ribbons of rubber down the road- let freedom ring!! BC.

Re: Mr. Harry Plotkin. He's told me that I was his favorite student many many times and I never even had him for a teacher, so I think he says that to everyone. And how come no one is posting pictures of Miss Kathy Brooks from Monday's birthday party. Cameras were flashing as she was crowned Queen for the day. Last, I know that you parked down the block from the Rout's and stopped in every neighbor's house for a drink and food. You were only 1 house away from making it and then I saw you peer over the fence and write "Kilroy was here." very funny. BTW, I'll donate that cursed bottle of Patron tequila to Good Neighbors Day again and hope to raffle it off for good. I'll actually pay someone to take it home. The bow on top has changed about 4 times to reflect the times of year (Xmas, Summer, etc.) and I'm running out of bows. We've had it back here so long that we've named it. See you at GND .. LYM Sid.
Not sure there will be raffles at GND this year. Call Norb and ask or call the Historical Society as I will be out of town for that event

Message: I was just looking at the Hawthorne High campus on Google Earth. I don't even recognize the school that I went to. Very few buildings left from the early days. Many new buildings. It is a really good looking school now. It's hard to believe that brand new school I went to is so old it's outdated and being torn down. It really makes me realize how old I am.

Message: Hi John, Couple of thoughts come to mind: Lots of good memories I shared with Jim Parisi, Wally Ristow, Russ Omey and others -- many of which revolved around the Lakers. Those were the days of Elgin Baylor, Jimmy Krebs, Hot Rod Hundtley, Rudy LaRusso, Tommy Hawkins and of course, Jerry West. We had gone to a few Laker games, and Jim and I decided to buy season tickets for the 1960-61 and the 61-62 seasons ( at, I believe $ $135.00/season ) I remember a couple of games - playing against Philadelphia.. Both games became "One 0n One"-- Wilt Chamberlain against Elgin Baylor--both coaches just let them go at it against one a another, and the crowds loved it. Both men scored well over 50 points each I recall. I remember Hot Rod Hundtley shooting hook shots for free throws-- games were fun to watch...not that they aren't today, but a different era, where non-contact sorta meant non-contact ... etc. etc. etc. Couple of occasions come to mind: some evenings coming home..fog home..fog so thick you couldn't see much of anything...Jim in front passenger seat, guiding as lookout, and Russ in back telling me if I was over or within the lane lines. Another time, five or six of us...15-16-17 yrs old..Mike Hollingsworth driving, ---Hey! It might have been Mike Shay--I can't remember....(sorry Mike...s. Getting old,,,) anyway, socked in with fog.... came to a "could just barely see hazy, red" stop light. Stopped. Car pulls alongside, three young men in their twenties jump out with baseball bats and come roaring at us. Mike floors it and goes through light...never mind you can't see a blessed thing!. Never saw them again. Mike says, " I didn't know what else to do!" You did just fine, Mike! Some old-timer 'Jocks' from Leuzinger get together every 2-3 months for a lunch/bull session ... I usually go, as I attended there my freshman and sophomore years---and Betty Fellows, if your out there, Tommy Skinner says Hi.
Some great memories there, Myron. Thanks for the Laker team too. Most of them had slipped my mind. Seems like you could get a very good seat at a Laker game, back then for about $4.50. Times have certainly changed. I heard someone say Jack Nicholson pays $1700 a seat.
