Message: Mea Culpa John for having missed your Memo of December 7, 2010. Must have been Christmas shopping on that day. I promise in 2011 to be more Hawthorne-relevant. Happy New Year to all and thanks again to you JB for your yeoman job in creating and maintaining CT. Cheers!
That's OK Dean, I too miss them sometimes and I put them up

Message: Happy New Year everybody. When I was a kid we used to go to a Chinese place, I think it was near Imperial and the Blvd on the west side. For some reason I picture it to be behind the pastrami place on the corner which would put it on Imperial, my parents used to call it Mr. Wongs or something like that, but that may have just been the mans name. All I know is that my mom loved Chinese food so we went there alot. Cindy
Hi Cindy, that place was called Yee's.

Message: Regarding the name of the Chinese restaurant at 115th Street...was there a "Lucky" in the name? Just north of the Chinese restaurant on the same block was a family style restaurant that dad used to take us boys back in the 50's. I think it was taken over years later by the Red Onion? Thank you, Janet, for the get well wishes...feeling better today. Three colds in a row sucks! Maybe I should retire so I can sleep in and get the rest I need... Hope everyone had a great holiday season and wishing all Cougartown a Happy New Year. May 2011 be the best for us all. John, thanks for your dedication to this site...you've done a wonderful job over these past 11-12 years bringing so many alumni back to their roots. Are you ready for another 11-12 years? Perhaps in the future you can start a bowling club for this group...something like the ones we had at HHS. I can hear you making lane reservations now...,"Tropicana Lanes? Yes, do you have any open lanes for 2000 bowlers?" Ahh, the memories...Jan
Hey Jan, Denny Unfried came up with the name I remember,"Kwang Chows". Feel better buddy and thanks for the thanks. I haven't bowled since 1980 but still have my Brunswick Black Beauty

Hi Jill, The Golden Phoenix was on about 120th and the Bl. The one we're looking for was on 115th and the Bl. I think it was gone by about 1955.

Message: Hey, John; Back in the early 1900's, Choped Suey is what an old imigrant Chinese restaurant owner used to feed his pigs & hogs down on his farm. One very cold day he thought he would heat it up for the hogs, after heating it up, it smelled so good that he decided to give it a taste and it didn't taste all that bad. He thought for a while and figured he could sell it to the American customers in his Chinese restaurant because Americans will eat anything if you put enough Soy Sauce on it. Hense, that's how Chop Suey came to be.Jorge
Uh huh.

Message: There was a Golden (something or other) Chinese restaurant on the SW corner of 120th(I think) and Haw. Bl. in the mid 60's. It was next to a shoe store. When I would get take out there, I would never get egg flower soup because they had no cartons for it. So the next time I went I brought a Tupperware bowl. When the sweet little chinese lady saw it she started to laugh and asked what it was for. I explained that I would like them to put the soup in it. She just laughed again and brought it to the back. When she came back she handed it to me with Scotch Tape all over the lid. Now it was my turn to laugh. When I removed the tape and showed her how to snap on the lid, she was totally amazed. Of course my feeling of superiority soon turned to crap when the pressure of the heat popped the top and I had egg flower soup all over the carpet of my car. Happy New Year to all! Thanks John for a great web site. Tom
You're welcome buddy, thanks for the story.

Message: This is strange New Year's Day and I don't think it has to do with numerology (besides, you Luddites have all conveniently left out the 20 before the last 11). No, I think it has more to do with all this California rain which has created too many sponge brains who are fascinated by the original location of Chinese food in Hawthorne. Could any topic be more boring? Ten point toss up question to those into it: who created Chop Suey and why is it never found in any decent Chinese restaurant? I think going through a New Year's Day with none of our favorite teams playing is torture. Can anyone get up for the Horned Frogs? I am working hard to root for Wisconsin until I just saw a cheesehead swap out their hat for a real badger. EArlier, I had to root for Joe PA and Penn State and their QB choked on the last drive. Get the picture, nothing is going in the right direction unless you are from the damn SEC! Only two decent Pac Ten teams in the hunt, Oregon and Stanford and we have to go back to work for a week to see the title game and come home on a Monday to watch Stanford. I think I got a bad case of the BCS Blues. They have screwed up the super marathon day of football we used to enjoy for 16 hours with four meaningful games in a row and at least USC or UCLA in one of them. Let's abolish BCS and have a national playoff which ends on January 1 every year. We only need the Sugar, Cotton, Orange, Rose and Fiesta matching the top ten teams on the last day. Then let the polls go at it to interpret the mess on January 2. It would definitely be better entertainment and drama then this. Got to run... Just heard a horney frog score again!
Well Dean, have you been sleeping in class? I guess you didn't get the memo. It's on page 1249. Do you really know what a NON-sports Cougar who reads this gleans from it? (get up for the horned frogs) (saw a cheesehead swap out their hat for a badger) (I had to root for Joe PA)(unless you're from the damn SEC) (just heard a horney frog score again). Please stay after class and read the aforementioned paragraphs on page 1249. OH and I believe Chop Suey, like Chili, is an American dish, probably from the San Francisco area.

Message: Jean; I think the place you are refering to was called the Golden Dragon or Goldon Pagota, just S/of Imperial Hwy. and on the W/ side of Hawthorne Blvd., next to the "Black Boar" Beer Bar, a HPD hang out. Like our bar, the "Exacta", in the Inglewood area, Hawthorne Blvd. & Centuty, these were the only two bars that certain ethnisities would not go into, I always wondered why hmmmmm, couldn't have been because there was always an armed cop in them 24/7.Jorge

Message: Hey John! I think that was the same restaurant....It was also on the west side of the Street. I couldn't remember if it was on Hawthorne Blvd or Inglewood Ave. The Blvd sounds right. Now if any one can remember the name of the place. Last time I saw those cone shape cups was at Johnny Rockets in Albq. They were the same size. They put snow cones in them. Same little metal holder etc. I told them that back in the day they used them for water....Well the waitress was very young and just laughed and said really?
Sorry Jean I don't remember the name of that place.

Message: For those of you who remember Ezra Dame C/O ’66, I learned today, from Bill Ennis, that Ezra passed away on April 16, 2010. There is a WEB page that has some information about his life after HHS. I only knew Ezzy for about a year but remembered him ever since. On page 1 of feedback I asked about him. John Baker found his address for me and I called him soon afterward. Ezzy, thanks for the memories.

Message: Enjoyed Jim Fredericks New Year Story...Funny. Were there many Chinese restaurants in the 50s or 60s in Hawthorne? I remember one my dad took our family to. It was in Inglewood I think. Can't recall the name though. All I remember is drinking water in white cone shaped paper cups that were in some metal holder...and that its where I first discovered people put gum under the table......
Great memories there Jean. I remember a Chinese restaurant on about 115th and the Bl. on the West side and those water cups you're talking about. . . . .where did they go?

Message: First encountered Blue Laws when I was in school in Louisiana 1975-77. They didn't sell Coors in Louisiana so once a month my roommate and I would drive to Houston and pick up 10 to 20 cases of Coors and bring them back to Lafayette. Coors sold for $1.50 a six. I charged $3.00 a six plus gas for those who wanted it. Especially the guys on the baseball team from Florida. Good way to make money while being on scholarship...Happy New Year to all fellow Cougs.
3 bucks for Coors? You had a gold mine there Wade Happy New Year to you and all the Greasbys in Ctown.
