Message: Henry, I also remember that Craig Ritchie "scored" from the goal line "two or three" times. Coach Chauncey said "I guess we have to be eight yards deep in the end zone before they'll give us the touchdown." After a few colorful phrases. The game film later confirmed it, Ritchie did break the plane of the end zone. I still have the game program somewhere. Hope everyone is doing well!

Message: Steve, Henry, Sloey: I was there, too. Here's how it happened: Tim Thomas intercepted a pass and ran it back to the 1-yard line. Did he cross the goal line at that time? Who knows? This must be the time that the films show him scoring. Anyway, the refs said he didn't. So, we had 1st and goal on the one. The short yardage squad went in, which included me at right half. We ran the exact same play that we ran numerous times during the season, and it never failed to get the needed short yardage. But this time it failed. As a matter of fact, I fumbled--for the only time in all 4 years at HHS. Santa Barbara recovered and the game went onto the Zero to Zero tie. They did advance, because they had 6 first downs to our 5. In those days we didn't play an overtime period.

Message: I remember hearing Chris Montez playing his music at Billy Boyds house on 122nd. The Boyds had a recording studio either in the garage or added on to it. I remember going in the studio once when I was younger. The Freemans lived next door to the Boyds. I wonder if they heard the rehearsing there. I never knew where Chris Montez lived though I knew it was in Hawthorne.

Message: I've been gone for a while, but I'm back. Catching up on feedback. KEITH! Chris Montez lived next to the Masonic temple on Grevilla. The reason I know this is that my grandfather lived directly across the street. The neigborhood people called him ZEKE! My cousins use to come over and talk to him. They were more his age, but I always heard the music from the one car garage. My only claim to fame, beside my accordian mis-adventures, and the fact that I married the hottest chick from the class of 1969
His name IS Zeke (Ezekiel).

Message: How about a memorable Cougar LOSS! CIF play-offs, 1965 in Santa Barbara. After four quarters HHS battled Santa Barbara to 0-0. CIF ruled that Santa Barbara won more first downs, ergo they advanced. No replay in '65 but team films show Tim Thomas crossing the goal line. The refs 1, HHS 0. Is that about how you saw it, Jim Sloey, oh Cougar mighty one sports guru?

Message: Hi everybody...I've missed you! I've been gone awhile 'cuz I've retired from The Salvation Army's Corporate Office in Long Beach and have just now gotten hooked up with my computer at home. I've missed out on the feedback on a couple of things....first, about our favorite remembered games...mine has to be our CIF Championship at the Coliseum between our champion team and I can hardly remember the opposing team....it was Long Beach Poly....we were the "Cinderella" team that won with flying colors! Thanks to a very talented and gifted team & quarterback, Jim Reale...nothing like it! I, my family, and all of Jim's friends & supporters were so proud of him & our team, that special night! Also, about Chris Montez (Zeke)...who was in my art class with Mr Williams for several years...after Zeke had made his first few songs with Herb Alpert, we came in conact again at El Camino College and shared some of our same friends. Zeke always remained the same humble, down to earth, guy I had remembered and was a friend I always valued. He's a great guy!

Message: Ron I think it was you me and his mother Mickie. Seriously. I don't want to leave a wrong impression about Jimmy boy, I don't know anyone who didn't like him. If you told me, he was up for most popular teacher and the results will be announced in a week, my only question would be what did he win. Congrats Jimmy. My almost brother-in-law.
Congrats Jim, my REAL little-leaguer-in-law.

Message: Hey, Ron; LOL, I'm with you, I don't even know Schreoder and I like him. Anyone that can teach & inspire any of these little gang bangers in school nowadays has to be OK. Maybe that's where he gets his wittyness from, his students. I used to teach student and the law at Flemming Jr. High in Lomita, as an elective. Most of the kids in my classes were gang bangers from the L.A. city corridor side of Westwern Ave.. My teaching style was kind of mind over matter, I didn't mind and they didn't matter, but my students did pay attention to war stories and what they could expect from a law enforcement point of view. It was a win, win kind of thing, I laerned from them as much as they learned from me, however, they did know who was in charge of the class. Jorge

Message: I would like to add a sidebar to Glenn Crist's email about the '64 class reunion that's in the works for next year. There was a 25 year class reunion that I never even heard about, but would have attended if I knew. I lived right there in the area (Torrance). If there had been a Cougartown website around, I probably could have been found. The technology - and the dedication of John Baker - has made it possible for us to locate HHS grads so much easier these days. So, here's hoping that we can all take just a little time to see if we can personally help to find as many classmates as we can. By the way, John, what year did this website get started? If it was around for our 25th, I wasn't computer-savvy enough back then to know about it.
Hi Lee Ann, It was 1997 when Cougartown (then, the Early 60s Hawthorne California Homepage) was started. Thanks to you and many others, it is still cranking out get togethers and reunions. Stay in touch Cougars, this is our mission.

Message: Hi John, it was noted at USC today that Dana Gioia was recruited to be the Professor of Poetry and Public Culture at USC, here's a link. He is from Hawthorne (and brother of jazz historian Ted Gioia, who I believe is a Cougar), I don't know him from Hawthorne but I hope I get a chance to hear him lecture or read some of his work, he's had quite a distinguished journey from Hawthorne to Harvard and back!!
Hi Debbie, thanks for the link. Yes, Ted is a 75 grad from HHS.

Message: That was an amazing story about my classmate and friend Jim Schroeder or as they say in North Dakota, Shrader. What is so amazing is that in high school there were only about 3 of us that even liked James Howard and that may be stretching it. But nevertheless congratulations Jimmy. Message: Jorge: Actually I'm not quite that aggressive. In the course of casual conversation I tend to ask folks if they grew up here in Southern California, if they say yes I ask if they mind if I ask what high school they went to. For example, two weeks ago I was at California Adventure park with friends and when I bought a coke the gal had one of those Disney badges that gives their hometown. Hers said Los Angeles so I asked what high school she attended. She said she went to Locke High and after coaching high school track for the past thirty years I know most So. Cal school colors and mascots. She was pleased I knew that Locke is the Saints and is blue and gold. Resulted in a pleasant conversation while I downed my coke. Now when my reunion committee sends me looking for lost alums I get pretty aggressive. In two weeks I'm going to knock on a fellow Cougars front door who lives in Norwalk and hasn't come to any reunions in thirty years. If folks really don't want to come that's fine but my experience has been that folks who get a personal invite come and have an unexpected great time!

Message: John Baker has been so generous to post an HHS c/o ’64 Missing List at the bottom of the Class Reunions page. Greg Bowman and April Hays Cederburg are spearheading an attempt to put together a reunion for our class. In that effort, we are attempting to gather addresses, phone numbers, and/or e-mail addresses of classmates not already listed in the Cougartown Information System and Alumni List. If anyone out there in CT land has family or friends who graduated in 1964, might I ask, would you be so kind to look at this “Missing List and help us fill in the gaps. I encourage my classmates to submit their information to the Cougartown Info System, and also send an e-mail to April ,Maureen “MoMo” Trott, Greg
Hey Glenn, you got cut short there for some reason, but I think all the 64ers got the message. Thanks and have a great reunion.
