Message: Comrade Bach, It is most unfortunate you didnt express your views about the elitist, blood sucking capitalist exploitation of the underpaid student proletariat who only wanted to have a good time and, maybe a small score, by going to the Prom. I think these events began in places like Beverly Hills and Palos Verdes and then trickled down the economic ladder to Inglewood, Lennox and Hawthorne kids who could ill afford the jack it took for the tux/suit, the limo and the fancy dinner on the town. One never heard of a Prom held at the Lennox Elks or Lawndale Moose lodges or going to dinner at Bob's Big Boy, although I agree with Sharon Ritch that the nights spent at a rock Concert followed by a night cap at BBB were the best. Our motives were pure, we only wanted to taste the high life, for one day, as our fellow Hawthorners trekked up to Malibu and down to a cool beach city so we could have a taste of wealth and prosperity. Unfortnately, the mix of caddy girls with choking hair spray and caked on makeup and awkward geeky guys clashing stipes and checks rarely generated the chemistry needed for one special pentultimate evening under the stars and moonlight, but that didnt stop us. Brother Larry, you probably could have pitched your Marxist-Leninist interpretation of high school proms and gotten an A in my History of Russia class taught by the same person who taught civics and public policy and whose name I now forget, but I did love his class. Thanks for the laugh and keep the faith. Comrade Putin will bring back the glory days when manly men avoided all Proms in order fill their vassals with Vodka and sing about adventures of boatmen navigating down the mighty Volga!

Message: My memory of Prom is this, I went to two proms once as a sophmore and once as a junior. No one asked me when I was a senior. I wore the same dress to both (i was practical even then). But I chose to get my hair done BOTH times in curls on top of my head and so much hair spray it took forever to get it all undone and it looked pretty bad. I just had it in my head that for prom, my hair had to be done up. Both times I felt uncomfortable and out of place. I have better memories of concerts at the Forum and dinners at Bob's Big Boy when the burgers were good.

Message: Alan, Sure sounds like a great introduction for some interesting prom stories. That has the potential of taking it up the entertainment chart a bit. Oops! May have to proceed carefully here. Suddenly I'm having this vague Busch Gardens flashback.

Message: I never went to the Prom. I was very anti-establishment in a juvenile fashion and had some proletarian notions that by paying a deal of money to attend the Prom, the majority class of not very popular students were in effect, subsidising the 'see-and-be-seen' event for the benefit of the minority class of most popular students. I thought it was exploitive and generally representative of "establishment" inequality. The idea of Prom Queen I thought elitist, sexist, exclusive, and most politically incorrect before there was such a term. Fortunately, I've learned plain common sense since then, and to believe what I see, not see what I believe, and understand what the Byrds were singing about in 1966: "I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now".

Message: I took a girl from Costa to the Prom and double dated it with her best friend and boyfriend (both also from Costa). Her boyfriend just happened to be Vice-Principal Nelson's son, Brad. Brad and I were buddies, but no relation. Now I know it's written on some stone tablet in a locked vault below Nyman Hall that at least ONE person in a couple is supposed to be from the school that's having the prom. I picked up Brad at his house and even talked to Mr. Nelson a bit before we left. We were sure we were going to get busted and banished from the event, and were sweating it as we were walking up to the front of the PV Country Club. We were even more sure we were gone when we saw Mr. Nelson greeting everyone at the front door. We walked in and I said "Good Evening, Mr. Nelson". He replied "Hi, Alan". Brad said "Good Evening, Mr. Nelson" He didn't even flinch as he replied: "Good Evening, Brad", and we walked right in. We were amazed that we'd gotten away with it. To this day I still wonder if he knew what was going on and just let it slide, or didn't put 2 and 2 together. Another possibilty was that he may have had some liquid refreshment before the event and was just going through the motions. We'll probably never know.
Hey Alan, He probably didn't care.

Message: My only regret from High school was waiting to long for the right moment to ask the girl of my prom dreams to go to the prom. So no prom stories for me.
Lots of high school boys had that problem Brian, me included. The rejection factor was just too large and too crushing.

Message: When I was first diagnosed a few classmates contacted me and decided to surround me with love, support, and prayers on this journey. One of these people was Ricki Valencia Farrell. I did not know her in school. She is in town and I was able to finally meet and enjoy her for 1 hour. She is truly a blessing in my life. The next one I hope to meet in person is Sue Jolly Walsh.

Hi Adrianne, I too think Ricki is a treasure and never knew her in school. I did know Sue and after 40 some years finally talked to her and hubby Wayne at Leuzinger Memorabilia days awhile back. She is still the same girl she was in high school and is also a treasure.

Message: I would like to report which, I believe, is a Cougar Sighting, my first ever. I am a Docent at the Living Desert in Palm Desert and work with the staff at Desert Adventures, a tour company in the Palm Springs area. I meet people from all parts of the world each day on our various tours. This morning, as people were loading the bus for a "Vortex Enery Tour", a couple approached me, and, as usual, I asked where they were from. The woman responded, "the Los Angeles area." She looked so familiar I asked, "Did you ever work at Hawthorne High School?" I Immediately responded to her positive reply by saying "Are you Lola Sides?" Lola was a mathematics teacher who retired from HHS in 1992. In the time that was permitted we shared many memories of friends and former students at HHS. Lola made my day today and reminded me of what a special community Cougartown.com has become.
Hey Bob, Now THAT'S a Cougar Sighting. Thanks very much and hopefully Lola will check in and find a long lost student or two right here.

Message: Tim (Jack) Re: Tar Balls If it helps, I am or will be doing my part for you soon. I am on the waiting list for a Nissan "Leaf" an all electric car similar in size to a Prius. I wanted a Tesla; however, the sedan will not be out for a year or more depending on what the company does. My wife and I gave our Prius to our daughter/son-in-law when they got married last summer. So, with the Leaf, we will be getting back on track. By the way our grand daughter is due any day now!Solar panels are next along with replacing several windows. Our home is 120 years mature (smile). Yes, solar panels do work on the west cost of Washington. I would go with wind, but the turbines need to exceed the height of our surrounding pines and cedars. The height requirement prohibits that option. Speaking of white sand, did I tell you about the time one of my Lance missiles crashed into one of the protected dunes at "White Sands Missile Range?" It was a mechanical error thank goodness or my career would have been very short. Did I say that I walk my wife to and from work daily? It is a two mile walk and the two boy Irish Setters love it, plus Sandy and I get to talk with each other along the way. Damn life is good. Bruce

Message: Hey, Britt Boy; Just what's wrong with ribbons in your hair LOL, it does not make you a bad person. Hey, John Boy, it's a slow day in Long Beach, just funnin. Hey, got a topic of sorts, does anyone remember when we were in grade school and that fat lady used to come to the schools and give (I think it was the third grade classes) flute lessons and you had to buy a flute from her, and if you didn't, the ones that she would let you use, tasted like alcohol for the first five minutes you use them. Also, remember when we had to square dance in class, (I think this was also third grade) especially if it was a rainy day and you could not go outside for recess to play, and if you refused to dance you got sent to the principals office and got your hand swacked with a ruler. Funny what pops into your mind when your bored LOL. Jorge
I know Ramona was into square dances for awhile. George Gates tried to get me to go a few times, but I didn't know a do-si-do from an alaman left.

(or Brower?)...and the little boy in front row, i think he's turned sideways...Jackie Trotter? Just guessing...
Hi Penny, No, maybe (not sure about that one), and no but thanks for playing our game.
