Message: Haven't posted in a while but saw John Hagethorn's post on the Rams. Yep, I remember going down on the field, after the games and couldn't believe how big the players were. Does anyone remember the Rams "Free Football for Kids"(I think 1954)? Don Heikes' dad used to take (I think) four or five of us to the Ram games and we got in for FREE and sat high at the "Tunnel End". We would go and play football outside and sometimes go to the Museum before the game. The Ram band would sit at the Tunnel End (in the bandbox) and play the Ram fightsong---and I still remember how it went. There was Don Heikes, Tom Ellis, Gordon Martin and me that would go every home game. Before the game, USC sometimes played a team from Camp Pendleton. Memories!!
Great Ram memories there Barney and thanks for checking in.

Message: Looking over the alumni classes in grade and intermediate schools and I'm amazed at the size of the class. In Catholic school (St. Joseph's) each room held no less than 60 students. Two classes for each grade. One class of public school kids would have been the number of students picked as ticket monitors. Anyone that went to Catholic school will remember that if you did wrong, the ticket monitor would give you a ticket with a pointed finger on it..then you had to turn your ticket into the teacher. I got one and asked the girl what the finger meant and she said, "You did wrong." Then I got another ticket for talking to the ticket monitor. See you tomorrow night Sidney. Hamburger, fries and a Vanilla shake with a lactose pill.
I love it...a TATTLING TICKET. We kept our mouths shut at Hawthorne Christian as the Principal, Mr Pike had a Big paddle. See you and Janny tomorrow, Til.

I told him about your new car and he was jazzed, said he did get to ride in one at a drag race at Barrett Jackson. I told him that he hasn't lived until he can cruise down the original drag strip...Hawthorne Blvd!

Hi Chuck, Thanks for the info. I removed your name from the picture. As to adding names; it would be a monumental task, but I do thank you for the offer. The names on that picture was from our guessing games here on feedback pages past. If anyone has class pictures that aren't there, please send them along.

Seeing as all the other York pictures I have are 4th grade, I'll say this one is too. It would be high school grad year 1965. Don't we have a 65er out there who can identify anyone in this picture? Yes please do that Alan, thanks man.

Naturally I told him about Cougartown and Cruise Night.

Message: While scanning the San Francisco Chronicle this evening, I was once again startled to find an article about Dana Gioia, native of Hawthorne and now the Poet Laureate of the state. The article is visible with a Google search at sfchronicle, com. He's a contemporary of Emitt Rhodes, both born in 1950, but not an HHS graduate, and born in a "poor, working-class town on the outskirts of Los Angeles." He's waiting for an invitation to return to Hawthorne, so perhaps he and Emitt could appear at Good Neighbors Day!
It could happen...

Now for you Cougs who don't know what this is, it's just what the name implies HELLcat. Aluminum hooded, 707hp intercooled blown Hemi with an 8 speed automatic that will literally rip the buttons off your shirt when you stand on it. Rich will bring this monster to Cruise night on April 2nd for anyone who wants to see what a 10 second factory street machine looks like. Message: My sincere condolences to you, your brother and family members, Gary. I remember your mom, how could anyone forget such a sweet lady with that beautiful smile? So many of us were fortunate to have such hard working, devoted, happy parents. I'm sure loads of great memories are coming to mind. My mom volunteered at York's snack bar and later was the Office Secretary at Romona (RIP Mom '92). Tom, my parents bought a lot and built a 700 SF house with two bedrooms and one bath where all five us lived. Our brother, Bob, (RIP 2013) moved into a travel trailer placed in our backyard because the house was so small for a teenaged boy. Later, a second house was built on the back part of the lot, trailer was sold, first house was rented out. Since the new home had three bedrooms but still only one bath brother Bob got his own room. We were the second family on the block to get a black/white 9 inch t.v. I remember an ice box instead of a refrigerator, and a clothes wringer mom would put the washed clothes through before hanging them on the clothes line. I still miss the smell of those sun dried sheets! So many family memories too hard to count. Like the Fourth of July celebrations in the street and a whistling Pete firecracker that followed my mom as she ran screaming in terror into the house; and, right behind her was my dad yielding the garden hose in a desperate attempt to put out the fire cracker and not be witness to his house burning down. And, our dad (RIP 2010), piling all of us into the Station Wagon along with shovels stating only that we were going for a drive. When we ended up at the sand dunes, dad pulled the car to the side of the road, opened the trunk, and to our great surprise, shoveled the beach sand directly into the trunk of the car! Mom was yelling, "What are you doing?" And, "Is this legal?" And, dad replying, "It's for the sandbox I built for the kids." And, "No, this isn't legal. Watch for the cops!" My sister and I ducked down in the back seats believing were were all going to jail. Mom was still yelling, " Hurry up!" And, "How are you going to get all that sand out of the car?" Dad replying, "I just hope the car starts!" Happy Birthday cousin Beverly!
GREAT Hawthorne story Billie Jean. I love those big family small house stories. Remembering spending the night at Bob Reagan's house. 2 bedroom one bath, sleeping on the floor in the boy's (3 boys) 9X12 bedroom. You had to go through the boy's bedroom to get to the bathroom so being stepped on in the middle of the night was pretty standard Thanks Billie

Message: Thanks Jerry, for the interesting article on Hawthorne property for sale in 1905. A quick visit to the internet shows the following: $75 in 1905 is worth about $2027 in 2015 $750 "" """ "" $20,270 " "" Average salary in 1905 was about $700 So it cost a little over 1 years salary to buy a lot and build a house in 1905. Median house cost in Hawthorne in 2015 is $510,000 Average salary of a factory worker in Hawthorne is about $27,000. So a home buyer in 2015 is committing about 18 years of salary to the same property in 2015. It also tells you that I have a lot of time on my hands on Sunday!!!

Message: My mom, Mildred Bickers, passed away this morning. She was 96 years old. She lived in Hawthorne from 1945 to 1985. Many HHS kids knew her because after working the 11pm to 7am shift at Centinela she worked the snack bar at HHS until about 10am. Additionally she worked with Dr. Thomson and Dr. Hertzic, both OBGYN in Inglewood and lots of HHS girls used them. She moved to Inglewood Orthopedic Group and took care of lots of broken stuff that happened to HHS kids. From 1957 to 1963 she never missed a football of basketball game that either my brother Bob or I played in. She was able to travel to UCLA games after that. She became good friends with Ty and Paco's moms and they had some adventures before they all moved off 134th St. She came off an Iowa farm, came to California as a nurse to work the VA hospitals during WW2 and met my Dad and stayed. I think we were a very typical Hawthorne family. She had a nice life and made sure my brother and I were set to have even better lives.
So sorry about your Mom, Gary. I know lots of the early Cougars remember your Mom from the cafeteria staff and at ball games. You know she will be missed. My sincerest condolences to you and the rest of the Bickers family.
