Message: Remember Ivory soap FLAKES? Mom used to mix them with a little water, whip them up and it was instant snow that she put on windows or the Christmas tree branches. Have a safe and Happy New Year everyone! Hope to see you all many times next year.
Think that was called Ivory Snow. Do they still make that? Happy New Year Janet!

Message: Judy, I believe that it was un-faced glass wool insulation instead of cotton. I don't know if you can find it these days in anything but pink (panthers vs. cougars). A Christmas memory of mine were the stencils and Glass Wax to use to decorate the windows during the Season. Alas, they no longer make Glass Wax but I found a video clip. Happy New Year to all of my Cougartown friends.
Great clip Glenn, brings back some good old Christmas memories. Have a super New Year.

Message: Paul, I remember that house on Ramona because everyone knew that it was the best in the city at Christmas. One year he had rolls of white cotton (or something like it) on every inch of his green lawn. I want to say he had big candy canes as well. If anyone knows where you can get those rolls of cotton, let me know, as I'm willing to give it a try next year. See you Thurs. Sidney, I will be in a drinking mood so there's your warning now. I'm going to drink a glass of heavy cream before we leave so that I don't get too drunk or too sick. (I wonder why that was the thing to do in the 60's - It only made a cream drink out of any booze you put down there.) Beware, when Italians drink we dance!!!!!! (or might be stomping grapes) but I will be upright doing something.
If you take a tbsp of Oxydol and dilute it in a glass of vinegar, then add a little ipecac, soy sauce, cayenne pepper, and chicken fat, it will make you so sick you won't want to drink, but you'll be dancing to the bathroom about every 20 minutes. Have fun out there folks, and have a Happy New Year.

Message: The people that always decorated the entire home & yard for Christmas was Kelly Newell & family on Ramona Ave. just north of 120th st. He was the owner of the Shell Gas station on 118th & Hawthorne Bl. He just about always won an award of some kind every year for the Best Christmas Home Decoration. The outside of his house & yard was entirely covered with lights, yard decorations and music. Definitely was a sight to behold and very memorable!
Thanks Paul and you and yours have a Happy New Year.

Message: Re: Janny's post. He walked the mall, I schlepped around the end of the mall where the old stores are, Sears and Penney's. (that's all anyone really needs.) And I want to send a Happy Birthday and love to Maureen Manning Desmore, better known as Lola to me. (I'm Virgie) I am calling you today to remind you how stuuuuuoooopid we were when we were 17. I know you're cringing but being that naive' seems to make funny conversation now, I wonder why that is. Merry Christmas Sid. If Ma Baker comes down, come join us for Mex food. Food that's not spicy and a nice quiet restaurant so we can talk.. close to a rest room and never under the A/C. We can pocket a few pink sugars and as always, keep your eye on the ground as there's always loose change somewhere. See how things change when you're on the sunny side of 70's. Merry Christmas, Happy New year and stop "walking round in women's underwear."
Thanks Til for all your sage advice through the years. Merry Christmas and a Happy to you and Howie. AND Happy Birthday Maureen!!

Message: Judy and I ventured out to the Del Amo Fashion Center mall this morning, a little shopping for Judy, and I wanted to see the renovated mall with the new stores. The updated mall is something everyone should see - awesome; big improvement! However, as I walked every level - inside and outside the mall - end to end I noticed that about 10-15 percent of the stores had Christmas decorations in their shops; pretty disappointing to say the least. I'm just happy that I am able to mostly recall the decorated stores of the 50's and 60's with all their Christmas decorations, which made for wonderful memories. Loved the stories about Sears and Inglewood that some of you shared recently. Market Street: decorated sidewalk to sidewalk. I remember the Broadway store in Baldwin Hills had great decorations in their windows as well. Maybe in years to come the Del Amo mall may up their game. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL YOU COUGARS AND BEST WISHES FOR 2016!
I agree Jan, the stores just aren't done up like days of old. I personally loved the train theme decorations in Sears in the 50s or the motorized Santas and Elves. You and Judy have a very Merry and a Happy and thanks very much for being my friend.

I hope Hawthorne doesn't end up running them out of town and to Texas. Need some help, I can't remember if HHS did any Xmas decorating. Seems like there was a tree in Nyman Hall?
I don't really remember any Christmas decorations at HHS but I'm sure someone will know, Gary. Merry Christmas to you.

Message: Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas! Remembering how exciting it was to see the Christmas decorations going up! We had a neighbor around the corner from us a little north of 120th,st. on Ramona. ( I can't remember their name , think he owned a gas station ) He went all out! Laid out artificial snow , had cut outs and a lot of lights. As a kid i was always excited to watch him decorate his home. The city of Inglewood always had nice decorations on Market st. ! And i think there was somewhere in Inglewood where you drove thru a neighborhood that was all decorated. Anyone remember that hood or any others , or homes that went over the top with decorations ?... And thanks JB for "Cougartown" Life is very good ! Jim
Thanks Jim for the story and you too have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Message: We always got our tree at Imperial Farms on Prairie and Imperial. I think we paid $1.50 to $2.00. It was always a douglas fir and not full like the ones you get today. Very spindly but we thought it was beautiful. We had very little room for a tree so it wasn't real big. It didn't matter how little we had, Christmas was always magical and so much fun. Never disappointed. I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas.

Message: Sears was a magical place when I was a child. I remember when it opened, now it's gone. My mother bought our first electric refrigerator there. That was very exciting. When I worked at the Bank of America I would sometimes go to the hotdog window on the lower level for lunch. I still remember going to see Santa. I was so excited to get a stocking with candy. No one taking pictures, just Santa. Amazing I can remember that far back. I also remember Regent Circle. The houses were so big and the decorations so elaborate. Great memories.
It seemed everyone shopped at Sears in Inglewood. Merry Christmas Marilyn and thanks for the Sears memories.

Message: Christmas Memory. All Christmas' at our house meant lots of family and friends and food. We always spent Christmas Eve at my Grandparents in Inglewood and when we got home, it was off to bed so Santa could come. Presents from my parents were already wrapped and under the tree, but Santa didn't wrap his gifts. The year that I figured out who Santa was, I wanted this new doll that Mattel had released called Barbie. I wasn't much for doll playing, but Barbie was so cool. I also wanted a Sorry game. Since none of the wrapped presents under the tree were shaped like those two things, I decided to check under my parents bed when no one was around. Sure enough they were under the bed. Yay! Christmas morning when my sisters were so excited to see their gifts, I had to pretend I was surprised too, but the joy of past years was missing. I still have that Barbie. She represents a very valuable lesson I learned that morning and I have not tried to cheat Santa since.
Great Story Linda, you sneaky little devil Thanks for sharing and Merry Christmas to you and the rest of the Sutton/Dill family.

Message: Paco, you forgot right at the bottom of the escalator was the vacuum cleaners that balanced the ping pong balls in the air. I always waited for one to drop but they never did. Of course the candy counter was a "must visit" even if you were broke. And Sears always went above and beyond when it came to decorating the toy department. It was a little kids wonderland. Then a quick trip to the shoe department so I could count the bones in my feet. And JB, I have the same memory... A trip around Regent Circle before going home was a must. Of course always keeping an eye out for Lee Aaker of Rin Tin Tin. I never did spot him though.
JC Penney had none of that
