Message: Nobody has posted anything about last Saturdays 40 year reunion for the class of 75 at the Ayres. First and foremost kudos to Lisa Marazi and her reunion committee for a well run event. I'm a year younger than the class of 75 but these were the guys I looked up to and the women we admired. I walked in the front door with three cheerleaders, Cathy Dion, Mindy Mc Intyre and Laurie Brisco and legendary journalism teacher Connie Krislock. A good evening from the word go. All in all everyone looked good, didn't see any bald heads in the room and the cheerleaders were all beautiful led by Teresa Duel. As I took a photo with my football teammates I realized the photo probably cannot be redone in ten years because odds are we will lose somebody. I find that at reunions it is often somebody I had not expected to see who makes the evening great. Although not personal friends with either, I had dinner with Steve Thomas'75 and Joan Kratz Thomas'77 and had a good time. The highlight of the night was seeing Mary Marsalas'75 who lived four doors away from me on Cedar Ave. Every street had gangs like we had, about ten kids on the block in the 60s who attended each others birthday parties, played ball in the streets (trying to touch passing cars) and enjoying our youth. Finally i was impressed by folks like Ted Hastings who came from Boise Idaho for the reunion. It's folks like that who really want to come who make the evening special!

They didn't even mind all the shopping or seeing us in curlers and PJs! We all had such a great, and funny, time that it was hard to head home. Thank you Glenn for the months of planning and for being the perfect host. Let's do it again! Janet And I did learn how to pronounce Gun Bun!

Message: The question of whether 7 Cougars (1 honorary)can coexist peacefully and happily in the same house for 4 days without killing each other has been answered and the answer is yes. A fabulous wine country weekend with everything coordinated by the best host in the world, Glenn Crist. Sonoma was like being in paradise. Glenn made sure all our needs were taken care of and man, can he cook! Along with our other master chef, Jan Blomsterberg, we ate like kings and queens, got to stay in a gorgeous house, tour Sonoma and 3 wineries, and just had the best time laughing and visiting with good friends. Leo Ainsworth came to visit and got to meet Dave Homewood and 3 of the sweetest Labradors ever. And no one killed Gordon Bell. Seriously, ladies... The men on this trip were incredible. Real keepers. Can't thank Glenn enough for a perfect time. Can't wait to go back. John, so sorry you couldn't make it.

Message: JB, for those people in the Verizon area, they may be having a problem due to Verizon being sold to Frontier Communications!! The emails are slow and some are not reaching their destination, maybe lost in the cloud? Gary, The football program at UCSB was put to rest in the the early 70's. I know Jack Curtis was the coach there with his son Jim as QB in 69. Bob Moore, a wide receiver, was the last All- American from the Gauchos. The program came back to life in the 80's for a short period with Pat Barnes as the QB who later transfered to UCLA for his final season and beat USC in '92. I think I still have the football questionaire from UCSB in November 1970. I was only a sophomore at HHS. UCSB was my second choice of schools behind CAL...

Message: Cougar sighting. While at the Auto Club in Manhattan Beach yesterday getting an old fashion Trip Tik to figure out how to get to Glenn Crist's in Sonoma , we were helped by Chaz Welker, HHS class of '97. He initially asked how long we had lived in Hawthorne and told us he grew up in Holly Glen and found out he was a product of the Wiseburn Schools and HHS. Karen is also acquainted with his mother who also works in Wiseburn. It is always a small world in Cougartown. Hopefully the maps he gave us won't get us lost:]

Message: First day at HHS as a Freshman was as easy as the last day as a Senior. I didn't worry about being trash canned, beat up, or embarassed by the upper classmen and in turn didn't harass any of the new incoming freshmen my senior year. I knew the seniors as a freshman because of football and baseball. Jeff Bottoms and Dennis Miller were my older brothers and made my life easy. Of course the occasional 6-pack helped out a great deal!!! Two a days were hot and long, without the water breaks. Tempers were short between sophomores and freshmen who competed for the same position on the C Team. If you had any experience in football from Pop Warner you won. My sophomore year I started on the varsity with three other sophomores. Scott Laidlaw, a senior, was the BEST football player and teammate I knew. Henry Cooper and Bill and John Sloey told me how to act way before I entered HHS, so I had some help. Both were solid football players and friends. Their influence carried me through my junior and senior years. The freshman class I entered with had many top athletes in all sports. We set team records in football, produced many college bound players in all sports and consumed many cases of COORS along the way!!! To have played with and known a great deal of the players at HHS before and during my time was essential and I carry these fond memories with me to this day. It was always a interesting moment when Coach Chauncey talked to me about football and disposing of the chewing tobacco in my mouth during walks to class my freshman and sophomore years!!! He worked with me at Prairie Park in the summer before my freshmen year to know and understand the system and play calling for football. This also helped me with getting to know the upper classmen. All Hail to you hail Hawthorne High!!!

Message: I am down with Paco. Intermediate was a much bigger deal to all of us who had spent 7 years at Ramona and we were told we might have 3 of our K-6 classmates in 7th grade. So Harold Lanksbury, Bob Canipe(LHS) Curtis Alurede and I met at Ramona and 133rd and marched in as a group. Useless because we were all split up when we got there. So I figured if I looked like an 8th grader, no one would bother me until they heard my name which took all of 3 days. So I saw a guy who looked too kewl for school with his black high tops, shoe strings tied together and hung over one shoulder..John Tillis..within a week I was his clone without the blonde hair. Never had any problems because all the fights were after school in Biggie's parking lot and yes the girls did put razor blades in their hair. And Gary you did win the lotto...

Message: Was by PVHS today and on a 81 degree day with high humitity. Two a days have started for their football team. As a freshman and again the following year we did the same. Remember it was practise,A&W then back to practise. As juniors we went to 3 a days. 7am then back at 1pm and again at 7pm under the lights at HalCap field. I remember some things never changed. Tommy Long alway got sick to his stomach every practise for the first week. Dennis Lord never washed his tee shirt all year and I had the locker below his. Dennis and I always had ants. Bill Daquila's never got hit and whomever was closest to Henry Cooper always got hit. Most of us dropped 15-20lbs that first week. You know those coaches that got there before us and stayed after were paid pennies on the dollar for those long hours. Thanks coach.

Message: 1958 I was sitting in Senior Square, when this freshman came walking by. When asked his name, he told me Mike Shay. Well Mike Shay I said, I need you to polish my shoes. He wasn't very happy, but he took on the task. Now, Mike was a friend of JB and my brother Tom. If I would have seen JB, I would have invited him to do the same thing. Tom, now that was a different story, he would have told my Mom I was picking on him, and there would have been heck to pay.. He was such a whiner. Just kidding Tom.. Fast forward to three or four years ago, I met Mike at Chips Restaurant and presented him with an old can of black shoe polish, would like to say it was the original, but don't think so.. Anyway, Mike opened that can of shoe polish and started to shine my shoes again. I said "Mike I'm wearing white tennis shoes". Just kidding Mike. For the rest of Mike's freshman year, I think he disliked me.. Let me tell you this, JB, Mike, and Tom, are the salt of the earth. Could not ask for better friends..
